Is it felt?
Posted 16 years ago # -
A type of felt, yes, though it has a woven core.
It's Pool Table Felt, glued to the slate bed and bumpers. for some reason it comes with a thin, coarse white cloth backing, which always, as far as I know, gets stripped off before use. Perhaps to keep the underside clean for the glue.
here's a 3-shot pan of one of the many wood trestle supported railroad tracks around here, this one's just off the 'main drag' (highway 38) through Drain. And yes, it's in regular use.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Goddy, nice picture! You like trains, don't you? Around here they've torn up and removed a lot of the track to create Rails To Trails paths. Now, with the cost of fuel, they are beginning to regret it.
Posted 16 years ago # -
took that to prove to a doubting pal they still used wood up here.
Posted 16 years ago # -
What else would they use besides wood? Well, just spent all my money on a trip to Sam's Club!
Posted 16 years ago # -
concrete and steel? seems the trend.

I am thinking about tossing a little "What Is It" of my own in here, but with a twist on the prize part. I am a poet, and the prize for the winning guess would be a poem written by me, on any subject matter that the winner chooses. Not one of those weird poems they try to teach you to write in school, but one that rhymes and makes sense (I specialize in Humor and/or Romance). Should I do it? If there is any interest, I will post a "What Is It" here tomorrow. Meanwhile, here is a sample of a poem I wrote back in 1986. Like an idiot, I posted it on a poetry web site back in 94/95, and I have seen it on over a hundred sites since, with people claiming it as their own (with some of them changing some words.....as if that makes it theirs). Here is a link to one of the thieves.....it is the first one, titled "Your Teddy Bear":

Dan.. that's so sweet!!!! A personalized poem sounds like a great prize. My hubby is a writer and most of his stuff ends up rhyming. Is that picture you? And since I answered your question in the spam subject, how did you dream up your nickname?
Hubby wrote several of these little limericks for the kids when they were small:
Once upon a time there was a little brown dog
That liked to play in a little hollow log.
The dog grew big, the log stayed small,
Now we can't find the dog at all!
Where is he???Posted 16 years ago # -
dan- i would love to 'compete' for one of your poems.
(especially, since in this game even when you lose, you win!)Posted 16 years ago # -
The story of my nickname? Well....uh....you see.....um....I was on the phone to my 19-year-old daughter (who, by the way, is probably OLDER than the guy in the pic on YouTube), and we were trying to come up with a nickname for her for something....I think it was a chat program. One of my suggestions was "PretzelLegs". She laughed and tried it, but it was taken. So then I said, "How about 'CreamyPretzel'? It almost sounds like some thing risque, but not quite." She turned that one down, so I said, "I kinda like it.....maybe I will use it!" The rest, as they say, is history. So over the last year, everywhere I go on the web, I am usually CreamyPretzel, although I did find someone through a Google search who grabbed that name for himself (herself?). Maybe I should buy CreamyPretzel.com ???? -Dan

to me it's not the prize but the challenge- as I always give access to 'prize' photos to all, so they can enjoy them.
Most of my photos are to prop up my personally trashed memory, but sharing some of the good ones sort of spreads the memories, especially of things that might change and be gone.
Catch and release, sort of. Hop on in, it's all in fun.
Neat handle and story to match. :)

I wish I could provide a poem to each person, but I fear I would never have time to eat or sleep. Wait a minute!!....I never eat or sleep anyway because I am always looking for games.
Here is a example for the winner. Let's say you won and said, "I want a poem about an alligator!" I would sit down and write something like this:
Oh, Where have you gone, and Where can you be?
I wish that I knew where you were.
These were the things that I wanted to know,
When I used to care about her.But Oh, poor Matilda, now that she's gone,
I just had to write down this verse.
She was one heckuva great alligator,
And now she's just some lady's purse.Copywright...uh...copyrite.....er...copyright.....oh FORGET IT!

Dan.....I would also love to "win" a personalized poem. That would be great! I've done a little poem writing myself (got it from my grandmother but I'm nowhere near as good as she was). Anyway you can read some of my "stuff" at my website which you can find in my profile. BTW is it okay to post personal websites in the forums? It doesn't make much sense to no be allowed to post them in the forums if you can put them in your profile for everyone to see.
Someone tried to steal the one I wrote called "My Cyber Friend". They made a few slight changes too. I emailed them and kind of told them off for stealing it and said they needed to immediately remove it from their website. He/she argued back and forth with me a bit until I threatened to sue them for stealing my copyrighted material. They backed right down and removed it. I do actually have copyrights to several of my poems and that's one of them.
Anyway....Let's get the game going! My taxes are done and I'm ready to rumble!
Posted 16 years ago # -
PS: I was sure you were going to say you picked your name because you like those creamcheese filled soft pretzels. YUM! Love thos things!
Posted 16 years ago # -
BK.. If I'm not mistaken, once something is written, and/or published, there is a 'common law' copyright, and it has to do with the date it was written. Glad you made your tax deadline! Ooops, that reminds me.. my state sales taxes are due the end of this month! Have to send that in quarterly.
I don't remember cream cheese filled pretzels? Sounds good though.Posted 16 years ago # -
Copmom.....I tried to find out how to go about getting a copyright on my poems but no one seemed to know how. Then our postman told me to send a copy of them to myself via certified letter and never open the envelope. He said if it ever comes to a lawsuit my dated/sealed envelope would serve as my copyright. I've done that with a few of my poems so I hope he's right.
Wawa has those pretzels and they are sooooooo good especially if you happen to get them when they're real fresh. Mmmmmmmm! I'll be going past Wawa tomorrow, think I'll take a little detour.......all this pretzel talk is making me crave one....
If you're good I might even share it with you.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Cop Mom and BuckleysMom....you are BOTH right. According to U.S. law, once you create something in writing, you are the legal copyright owner.
The post office thing is called the "Poor Man's Copyright". Take some fool into court and let the judge open an envelope with a postmark on it and a sealed strip across the back flap that was put there by the post office, and you will win your case every time.
Hmmm....just because of my nickname, it would appear that several women on here might be picking up a few extra pounds in the near future.......
Posted 16 years ago # -
or losing a few running around looking for not-local delicacies- here all I've seen are peanut butter filled.
that's kind of why (aside from who would pay for them?) I don't watermark my pix. I have the original full image(s), in the wild are only subsets.

Buckley - In regards to your question "is it okay to post personal websites in the forums?" when a member clicks on your name,as in your above post, it will automaticaly go to the website you listed in your profile. If I click on the word member under your name it will go to your profile page.
If a members ID is in Bold Black like mine or goody, funky, creamy, none of us have a website listed in our profile.
Click on copmom,s Id next to her post and it takes you to the site she has listed in her profile.goody - Nice photo of the tracks, you have some nice scenery in your area, all we have here are cornfields and flatlands.
creamy- Hope you don't mind the abbreviation...? Your offer for a prize sounds great. Although you might want to be careful about remarks like "several women on here might be picking up a few extra pounds in the near future.......", some of the women around here are quick to draw swords...AKA the Mango Mama LOL!

So Dan, now you want to play these "Eyeball Benders" now? I can't wait. I want to win a personalized poem. The Teddy Bear poem is nice but just a little sappy for my taste. Instead of just writing the poem would you consider recording yourself reading it and posting the sound file? That might be fun!
I've got a big jug of those peanut butter filled pretzels right here. My brothers girlfriend went to the nearest Sam's Club (about 80 miles away) and picked up two for us. Hubby and his buddies finished one 2.75 lb. jug off in 2 days!
___________________________________________________________________________How about we do a game while we wait for Dan to get his together tomorrow?
Here's MD-What Is It? #47.

#47 looks like a spring.
SCUBAGUY: I only mentioned the
extra weight" because of all the talk about eating pretzels.MAIZEY: Glad you don't like sappy ones. I prefer to write humorous ones. And no, I will not be recording me reciting the poem I write. Not in a million years.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Dan, it is a spring but it's part of something else. Can you guess what that is?
Aw, why not recite?
Are you afraid your voice isn't right?
Twas' a joke & should be taken light.
Won't be long afore I say goodnight.
Don't want to witness a cream-filled pretzel fight!________________________
I'm not a poet and I know it! :)Posted 16 years ago # -
it's a torsion spring, the near end should be used to exert resistance counter-clockwise. If it's in what it's part of, there's no center pin... a clothespin?
but all I can see is spring.
Thanks, scubaguy- that's at half-resolution. Yeah, lotta variety.
Posted 16 years ago # -
goody, you are good! Very technical description of the spring in a clothespin
Just for you, a Great Wall of China Panorama Picture. (Must have quicktime to view and zoom.)
Posted 16 years ago # -
Not on this laptop, then. the 2800+ has quicktime, and a vidcard that can handle it.
I've seen a few torsion springs that were retained from the outside, but only clothespins with that heavy a wire and number of turns that didn't ride on a center pivot pin- they twist loose too easy if there's the slightest angular force.
clothespins they're captive from both sides. very elegant design, really.

Scuba....thanks for setting me straight again. Someone told me that a while back but guess I forgot. My CRN took over again.
CreamyPretzel....you don't have to feel bad about causing any weigh-gain here cause I can pretty much find something edible in everyones name. Ex: Maizey = corn = popcorn, Scuba = seafood = crablegs, WhiteRabbit = white chocolate bunny, Copmom = potpie, Funky = puffin corn, Goody = "goodies", etc. Yes, food and I have quite a history. and speaking of food......I'm headin out to get me that cream cheese filled pretzel. I'd bring one back for everyone but then I'd have to bump ya all off so I could have them all to myself.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Okay.....here it is. The first person, if any, who guesses what this is will get a poem written by me on any subject they choose (excluding Calculus or Analytic Geometry). There are just a couple of rules:
If it isn't guessed by Midnight tonight, Pacific Time, no poem. (Don't worry, I will do this again sometime for a poem if no one gets it).
This is the only clue you get. If no one guesses by midnight, I will post another clue. After midnight tonight, if someone guesses, I will award them with an entertaining little prize on the web to keep them busy.

Good luck! (You'll need it.)

ok, I grok the nail (brad/tack) with a somewhat unusual forming die used to form the head, but a shiny pink 3-D item with a straight edge could be many things.
if soft, it could be a costume part, one of those stick-on latex 'scars' or 'wounds'-
if stiff, well- a strange sculpture.
