I reuse the jars too, IF I get the ones back that I've given away. We can't use all the jelly's we make so we do give them away quite often! I don't wax seal, I put the lids on to seal them with the bands. I just use the recipe that comes in the pectin boxes.
I would say jam instead of jelly, since it's thick and fruity. Now the grape we make as jelly since it's more wiggley.

Where's my post? I suggested using it as jam, since it's thick & fruity. I would reuse the jars except the smaller ones we give away and don't often get them back. Got plenty of the bigger ones, but since it's just the 2 of us, don't want the really large ones. We seal with the bands, not wax.
Ah, now there's my prior post.. guess it got hung up since there was a page change!Posted 16 years ago # -
yep, thought so, but the wife disagreed. using the jelly instructions it gelled before I got the last half-jar (18 ounce) out of the pot! we just save all the little jars from other stuff like natcho and guacamole dip, jelly, etc- thus the parowax- the lids aren't standard.
btw, when a post disappears, just post a one word follow-on and see if it pops up.

Well, as we make each batch, there's always a bit more left over so we make one "house" jar with all the drips and drabs to put in the fridge for us since they do set up so quickly. Now with the apricot/pineapple, that said it could take up to a week to set up.
As for those other jars, nacho, etc., I keep the glass ones to use for pouring left over grease in when cooking. Mayo jars USED to be great, but now they're all plastic!Posted 16 years ago # -
I save veggie cans for grease, when full a wrap of strech-tite food film seals them for disposal. bacon grease I separate in a glass container and when cool it goes in a food-film lined bowl, in the fridge to set up and then film-wrapped to the freezer.
I use a foreman grill for bacon, so the drippings don't burn and the bacon is nice and light.

If you want REALLY great bacon.. bake it! That's how all the restaurants do it. I put a rectangular cooling rack on little legs inside a cookie sheet pan and it really comes out yummy, and the grease goes below the rack. Set oven at 375 for about 12-15 min.
Hadn't thought about veggie cans, since I'm in the habit of putting them in a recycling bag.Posted 16 years ago # -
gotta try that, thanx. if there's a cash deposit, I store and return. if not (like cans) I find other uses.

We had cash deposits in Calif., but not here in NC

then I'd have a lot more 2 and 3 liter bottles for plant greenhouses and such. and make a lot more aluminum-can sculptures.
here's G What is it n021.

Pretty red color! Is it part of a weedeater or yard tool? If you start doing those aluminum can sculptures, I think your neighbors would frown at the view? Maybe if you lived in a desert and made a home out of empty bottles, it would fit right in there!

Is it a bicycle or scooter?
Posted 16 years ago # -
nope, waay smaller. easily single hand portable, few inches across, couple high. that's part of the hand crank. that metal bit is a cutting blade. maybe 1/8" exposed. the base is one piece, the lighter color below. very light. craft item.

A paper cutter?

Is it a bow maker?
Posted 16 years ago # -
not a paper cutter or bow maker. it is a cutter.

Thread cutter?
Posted 16 years ago # -
I'm tempted to give you that one, copmom, because it's real close- but I don't think it would actually cut thread, it's made for something else. let's try another round. You're the closest by far.

perhaps another glimpse?
Posted 16 years ago # -
LOL that glimpse looks like the red "stop" button on the Staples commercials!
A hand held cutter for Christmas wrapping paper?Posted 16 years ago # -
no, that's farther away than a thread cutter- this has a rotary motion, and the blade is in line with the crank, sharp edge down.

Is it a sewing notion?
Posted 16 years ago # -
no, I don't think so. to tell the tale, this makes many a short story.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Now that clue makes is sound like a fairy tale! "tale", "short story"... errrrrrrrr
wire cutter?Posted 16 years ago # -
what's another word for tale- an old word? that applies to crafts and textiles? this cuts that up in short lengths.

It must be a Yarn cutter, perhaps for making tassels?
Posted 16 years ago # -
tassels on pillows, latch-hook rugs- yep, it's a Yarn Cutter, made in germany. another view, and here's the box.
here's a rather vivid sunflower, a small teazle head in a matchbox dumptruck, and mindy's brother hobo checking out our car.

Hi, Goody! Thanks for the lovely pictures.
I've been my usual swamped self and haven't had much time to hit the forum of late. I breezed in and scooped copmom, but she did all the heavy lifting! She really did win this one, I think.
Posted 16 years ago # -
well, she was certainly closing in fast- but personally I still regard the pix to be fair game for all, the only real personal gain is satisfaction at the Aha! level- and I don't think we have any sore losers around.
look back at the times we've helped each other figure out what the item is, and half the fun is seeing new and different things (or items we've seen before) from a different angle.

I'm definitely NOT a sore loser! Just didn't even think of yarn! Hey we lives, and we learns!
