maizey.. both good guesses, but nope. Hummmm, did I say "inside" many homes? No I didn't! Now that's a real hint!
and maizey.. I'm going to let YOU be the one to decide the prize someone gets .. I've got to to set up my new telephone that I just got a Wal-Mart.. they sure don't last long! And computers are easier for me to set up than stupid things like phones!

mom#1 - awning, fascia, storm door, siding, greenhouse, gutter, flood light, lawn furniture, gas or charcoal grill?
My home does not have too many more parts...just walked around the house looking for things.
Are you & I the only ones here?

mom#1 - swimming pool or swimming pool cover?

maizy I think you're right, we're the only ones here. LOVE your house! You won't lack for water... and you ARE on the right track, not a swimming pool cover, but a part of the pool! Now guess what part!
Wait until you see the full picture.. it's an actual one my daughter had on her wall, I 'borrowed' it because she wouldn't give it to me.. I took a digital of it so I'd have it for posterity!!Posted 16 years ago # -
maizy, since you did guess swimming pool.. I'll give you that. Here's the full picture:

It was taken years ago, when we lived in Southern California, and our St. Bernard never lacked for drinking water!! We called her "Baby Cow". My blow up picture was some of the tiles in the pool. Hope I'm doing this right! DUH!Posted 16 years ago # -
copmom - That's a great picture! I don't know why your daughter won't let you have it!

Now I'd better get that new phone hooked up and get some orders written up or we'll never get out of here. Something else I just thought of.. with all the guessing, I've not even had time to think of playing and GOTD games!!! LOL

Well I have it now!! I'm afraid I magnified the whole picture before cropping, so it's not too clear. I'll learn! I drove her crazy with the picture. We had to go over to her house to bring some food while she was at work, (I still can't learn to just cook for 2), so I told her we'd 'borrowed' something and she had to guess what it was so she could get it back. It was on the wall when we first went inside her downstairs room. It took her forever to figure that one out. She was guessing what room, what color, what size, etc. She even tried guessing dirty clothes, a knife, etc. So funny. When she asked if it was pointy, I said the corners were. (It was in a frame). Then finally I told her it was black and white, and she said "Baby Cow"!!! I want it back! LOL The main thing I tried impressing on her is that if someone took something from her house, she'd never even notice it!

I have pictures of a gadget that I brought home when we were emptying out my uncles apartment, after he moved into an assisted living home. I don't know what it is or does. It's mystery to me.
Here is a description:
The only markings are the words "Perfect Sound" and a battery warning label on the inside of the top cover. It has a DIN jack on one side and a push switch on the opposite side. When looking at it from the front, there is a stationary brass pin that's machined into the shape of a dumbbell. Under the cover you can see the brass pin, battery compartment, the back of the switch, a flashlight bulb, and the back of the DIN jack. The entire are below all these components is filled with resin. From the battery compartment there is a red wire attached to the switch and a black wire going into the resin near the bulb. There is another red wire attached to the switch that goes into the resin near the other side of the bulb. The bulb has each a red and black wire going into the resin. There are 4 wires coming from the DIN jack, red, black, yellow and pink w/black stripe; all embedded directly into the resin. It takes 4 AA batteries. It has a strong "electrical" or "melted plastic" scent. The box is 2"x4"x1.5". I'm assuming that it is from the mid to early 80's. Put batteries in it and the light comes on with the switch.I thought it could be a device to plug into a TV that would automatically adjust the volume of loud commercials. But why the brass pin?
Here are the pictures of the MYSTERY DEVICE.

my bad for posting that core pic as a sideline before anyone got this:
http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=es2szi0.jpgI zombied myself looking through pix.

But why the brass pin?
there's a missing translucent colored cover that clips to it, that the bulb lights up.
no marks on the back side?

Hubby said it's an engraver for a counterfeiting machine! He knows because that's what his uncle did! Maybe, even tho' your uncle is in assisted living, if he's still got control of his faculties, you could just ask him??

goodgotd - It doesn't make any sense that the manufacturer would use an expensive machined 1/4" diameter piece of brass to hold a cheap hunk of plastic. My thought is that the brass has another function but it was machined with a groove so that the light could be seen. There is no indication that there was any kind of cover over the open "v" cutout area. The lid doesn't snap closed, but rather just sets into the base. I had a had time getting the batteries to stay in. I've added a couple of more pictures to the slideshow. I removed the battery contacts from the housing to show how awkward they are and some closeups showing the resin covering part of the DIN jack & switch. I'm thinking that someone designed this and special ordered the parts to assemble at home. It doesn't have the construction of a mass produced product. The housing is a very rigid, heavy plastic.

copmom - Uncle has both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. That's why he's there. He hardly talks at all anymore.
I could use some money. Does your hubby have any idea on how to get it working?

goodgotd - Is your pic the piece of paper at the beginning of a roll of cellophane tape?
Added
Or could it be the tape you have to pull off of an ink cartridge?Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi everyone.
Maizey... I wonder if that could be some sort of tuning device, ya know, to get the right pitch for a musical instrument? Does it say anything on the bottom like brand or manufacturer, serial number, anything?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Buckleysmom - No adjustments and no markings other than "Perfect Sound".
Posted 16 years ago # -
nope, not for tape, though often tape is used on it. and no again, these get applied. They often get moved around, there's a hint.
=========
as for the logic, the missing piece probably held the cover on, too. from the placement, it may also have been a mounting brackiet.Posted 16 years ago # -
Good......is that one of those data punch cards, can't think of the "technical" name offhand.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hollerith cards? heavens no. These are in use today. Though I do have hollerith cards and 8" floppies.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Maizey.....it's very interesting, hope you can find out what it is. I wonder if my dad would know, I should print out the pic and take it over to him. Maybe I'll do that.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Is it some sort of stencil?
Posted 16 years ago # -
no, not a stencil. If you had noticed this when you saw it, it would be printed visibly.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Good.....is it found in households or would it be more for office use?
Posted 16 years ago # -
goodgotd - post-it note, the backing of the pad?
Posted 16 years ago # -
nope, these are printed up for individual use. and the patten changes slightly.
I thought hidden in plain sight might work a round or two, but this is amazing. purloined letter approach indeed.
Posted 16 years ago # -
goodgotd - file folder tab?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Nope- they (file folder tabs) don't move enough to fit. fun being on the guessing end? <grin>
is it found in households or would it be more for office use?
well, I'd say businesses see more of them on average than households- but only on average. some businesses see relatively few, while some households see them on a regular basis. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one of these laying about, unnoticed, right now.
I enlarged it about 3 to one if that helps. closer to 4:1, but it's printed on something larger.
