Uhh- copmom- doesn't that fit the definition of wood, subcategory 'board' from plank to veneer? A bit fuzzy, perhaps?

It's an ink well on an old oak desk.

Woods too new looking for it to be an "old" oak desk .. I've got one of those old oak 'school teacher' desks, and it's huge!

WINE CASK? BIG BOWL FOR STOMPING GRAPES?
Posted 16 years ago # -
yup, it's the bung hole of a brand-new, fresh charred white oak barrel, and they're storing a bunch of them here in drain on the way to nearby wineries. they use the same ones for aging distilled spirits, but not around here.
how about some autumn colors?
I'm trying to track this one down too- jim calls it 'flame bush'.

Great shots goody. Guess I'd better get busy uploading my pictures .. been snapping fall colors here too, and need to send them, but now I've got SO many pics on my camera it's overwhelmed me on sorting them out, etc. I think they go back to August! All I know is there's a couple hundred on there! YIKES!
Posted 16 years ago # -
yikes, huh- think of my rock and a hard place- there are a bunch of the M517's 13,000+ pix I haven't sorted out yet, and *lots* of the canon's 9269 (current count) shots that got stuffed on dvd's with barely a glance for lack of hdd space.
unstitched panoramas, pictures I just didn't get to before I had to make space for another gig or so from the card (a 2 gig card is about 500 pix, and my preference is to shoot lots so I get at least some good ones from each session, and movie mode is worse by far.)... the canon's 3-6 mb per shot [I thought about it a bit and went to superfine quality to allow for post-processing detail loss] gobbles space at a terrifying rate, I assure you. 8 dvd-r's since I got it. 6 from the HP.
I dump the card and make copies to 2 other machines every time I bring it back in. I just don't trust having pictures hanging around with a single copy that could get messed up.
hmm.. august... august 24th was 5000 shots ago.

Thanks for the pretty pictures Good, our trees are slow this year.
Thanks nashcat for giving me the idea/answer.Posted 16 years ago # -
Well goody.. you've certainly made me feel LESS overwhelmed!! I have a habit of shooting several shots of the same thing too in case things don't turn out the way I want. Not counting all my 'screen' shots taken through the window.. learned not to use zoom on indoor shots out the window, but out the window is the ONLY way I can get pics of critters that show up here to feed. Strange, haven't seen a turkey feeding on our upper bank in quite awhile - do you suppose it's because Thanksgiving is next month? LOL
Must take some more of our little feral kitties (teenagers now), as they climb up and eat peanut butter off the tree that we put out for the woodpeckers! We get such a kick out of watching them and all their antics.Posted 16 years ago # -
if you want to shoot through a window, get the camera real close to the glass for lower reflection, and a dark cloth around it will block indoor lights and such and do even better...
Posted 16 years ago # -
and here's G What is it n028.
Posted 16 years ago # -
goody.. it's not the reflection, I don't use the flash, it's just that when I take a zoom pic of something outside, I end up with the item I'm shooting being blurred behind a great detailed shot of the window screen! Guess I could remove the screen from that one window since we won't be opening it with winter and cold weather anyhow??
As for your 'what is it'.. looks like a wheel to mount a tire on??

GRINDING WHEEL?
____________________
Thanks for the tip on taking photos through glass, it's something I can pass on to the hubby. He's done a lot of that this past week while I was driving.Posted 16 years ago # -
samm, we've been doing that a lot too, lately, with all the fall colors. Car pictures work great, but every time I tell hubby to snap a pix he says, 'let me drive and then YOU can shoot to your hearts content'! LOL The main thing about taking them through glass is turn off the flash so there is no reflection/bounce back! I've got mine permanently set to no flash, except for dim indoor shots, and then there's a setting on this camera to not need the flash for that either.

the gwii has nothing to do with tires, the round part is less than 6" across and
one piece with the base.here's another peek.
window screen is a problem, I agree- either get too close to it for your camera to be able to focus on it, or back away far enough for the lensing to blur it if that works.
it's very much like a grid of pinhole lenses in front of the camera, and that confuses the auto-focus.
I won't drive on my meds, and getting my wife to slow down or stop for photos is a pain. if I snap something far enough away I can get reasonable shots, but since it's 55 or 65 mph just a few blocks from home, to nearly the destinations, stuff close to the road is hopeless.
here's an example at 55 mph- the train tracks are 15 feet away, the chain link fence is probably 45 feet and still hopelessly blurred. the log picker and cars are 150 feet plus, and are reasonably clear.

Now that's one thing my Olympus C4040 does.. takes great shots even while driving along!
And that what is it is SO familiar looking, can't quite pin it down! Is it something to do with sewers??

Hi EB
Goody......is that some sort of boat anchor?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Looks like a large milk can.
Posted 16 years ago # -
heavy enough to be a boat anchor, but not meant for it, and it's solid steel. 14"x11" at the bottom, 10" tall.
