BuBBY, Archangel, your point is taken. Do not think that what I advocate is political correctness. Far from it. The truth is, there is a very thin line that seperates humour from ridicule. I think of the timid person who wants very much to ask something, but decides not to because he does not have the nerve to brave this particular thread. Not all users here are native speakers of English. The results of writing in a language when you think in a different one, are often hilarious. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/6052800.stm) Not knowing English is neither a crime nor a sin. It is only mighty inconvenient !
How many would be amused if they knew that their physician laughs at them (behind their back) and that his sympathetic, friendly smile is actually a disguised sneer ?
Not many would prefer a similar lawyer, music or dance teacher or whatever, you name it.
The ability to laugh at oneself is a gift, but it is a personal thing as well. The arguement that " I laugh at you therefore you ought to laugh at yourself" or even better, "I laugh at you, if you have any sense, you would laught at yourself" are not reasonable premises.
"Against the onslaught of laughter nothing will stand". Mark Twain

Not to get overly serious, prs, but the problem a lot of times comes from people who are so self absorbed that they have no internal editing. (Yes, I know I'm self absorbed, but I do try and self-edit a little.) When you get comments that are both self contradictory and ridiculously obvious at the same time, it's hard not to laugh. If you read this thread, you'll see stuff pretty close to, "I use this software except when I don't" and other such nonsense. The sad truth is that many of these people don't get it even when they do see their comments here. Nobody wants to drive them away, but it's also frustrating to wade through this stuff in the comments section. Sorry to be a buzz kill. I see your quote and raise you one, "I laugh that I may not cry." - Lord Byron. And remember, "It doesn't load on Windows 3.1." If you have not yet seen THAT gem in the comments section, don't worry, you will.

I wear my badge proudly! LOL
We are all different and thats what makes this world interesting. You see, I come to the forum first to see what's happening. Right now I don't even have a clue to whats being given away so,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I'm headed for the front page of GOTD to check out the software then read the comments! Bet you all went there first! Today's (2-8) GOTD comments on WinLog Assist got a little off the reservation. Made me think there was at least one candidate for this forum. Just sad:
"Yet another sick program to allow people to spy on one another and ruin their lives and perhaps marriages."
Not that you don't hear this all the time on anything that monitors. The sad part, though, is that macros, the intentional key loggers, go back, what?, 20 years or more? Monitoring programs of all types have been around how long? If this is just "another" program of this type, do these people possibly think their whining is going to shove all those genies back into the bottle? Let me try: "I hate stupid people; I wish they'd all go away!" What? They're all still out there? Shucks!
Also, "ruin their lives and perhaps marriages". To paraphrase a source I don't often see eye to eye with, the NRA: "Einstein, software doesn't ruin lives, people ruin lives. In your case, perhaps your own."Posted 15 years ago # -
I'm wouldn't be surprised if this is a wonderful person, and I don't want to drive people away, but PLEASE think before you post. (The yesses in parentheses are my answers for clarity. Also, this is the full post.)
On ArtStudio:
"Sorry, but after visiting the website and following various links in the comments here, I still don’t understand what the purpose of this app actually is.
Screensaver creation? (yes) Surely not another one?
Adding fake fly-by clouds to a photo? (yes) Not needed, thanks.
Making the water in a photo appear to move? (yes) No thanks, again. I prefer to use my videocam to capture the real thing.
I guess I must be missing the point of this app. Any links to creations achieved with it would be much appreciated. Enlighten me. Cheers, G."
On that last paragraph, there was one example posted 3 hours before this comment, but, MORE IMPORTANTLY, the developers page has a number of video examples.
So, if something doesn't do what you want or need, you can't understand that others might be praising it because it does what it does? And that might be because they want to do what it does?
Ah, there's no absorption like self-absorption!

This one, on the same subject, may be an even better example:
"I don’t like artistic things, so therefore seven thumbs down, definitely no good. Nero only turned one tumb down, and I am six times better than him so I should know."
And, the same person immediately followed it with this gem:
"It’s true, don’t waist your time on this. Esp if you already are too tubby."
I would like to paraphrase the singing of little blue cartoon creatures:
"La la la la la la la, you are a troll. la la la la la la la, won't you just go." :)Posted 15 years ago # -
Giveaway of the Day - Video to Flash Converter,
Since “conversion” is the theme of the day, I’d be grateful beyond words if anyone knew of any way I could convert .BMP images into an .FLV or .SWF video.I have been looking for something that will do this for 2 years!
#51
Easy =)
Use Windows Movie Maker to create your video with your images.#51, have you tried converting BMP to Gif first, then convert it to flv or swf?
I did not know you can make a BMP to a video or Movie if I can see that it move me LOL.
Posted 15 years ago # -
HD, I don't blame you, but it's possible they meant a whole series of BMPs, like a slideshow. Still, if they're storing everything as bitmaps, it shows how "advanced" they are. :) Maybe the funniest thing is how many people have apparently never heard of Google, Yahoo, or using any search engines to find answers. Or maybe it's just TOO hard. I've been waiting for 2 years for someone to point me to the bathroom. I've got to go soooooo bad. LOL.

Watch out HD and watcher. Your getting as bad as me! ROTFLMAO

Posted in todays comments about the KeyLogger.
"Put this on your laptop that you carry around. If the laptop gets stolen, you might be able to track the thief."
ROTFMAO

Priceless, Angel! I think I read through the whole board and that may be the champ of champs. That reminds of the Monty Python sketch about the killer joke used to defeat the Germans in WWII. That person must be joking! If not, we've finally found someone who should be banned from owning a computer. Have to go now. Have to download the keylogger to my desktop as theft protection. I think it was recommended by Moe, Larry, and Curly, Computer Consultants.
Posted 15 years ago # -
I think we might have been a little hard on this person, Angel. I forgot this software can secretly send an email report. I guess this person was thinking you might get that email and maybe authorities could use it to trace the thief. On the other hand, you would know better than anyone how far fetched that might be, so maybe we weren't so far off base in our skepticism after all.

Well the first comment I tend to agree with...
#64 “Spokane Dude” ,#10 “Harry”, #31 “Mavic” and other lazy douche-bags… There is a forum set up for general questions - this isn’t the place. PLEASE STOP with the moronic “how is this different than XYZ ??” posts. HOW WOULD WE KNOW? This is a REVIEW area. Download the software, install it, work with it… and then YOU WILL KNOW how it’s different from something else on your computer and can WRITE A REVIEW TELLING US ALL ABOUT IT… get it?
Ditto for those of you imbeciles who feel the need for long-winded 911 posts followed by “never mind I got it” two minutes later. THIS IS NOT A TECH SUPPORT FORUM EITHER.
If you have general questions about the software - go over to the discussion forums. If you have (real) support issues - take that to the appropriate place - NOT HERE
And the following post - (to prove the previous point).
How does this compare to Star burn?
What next? Shall I compare thee to a summers day?

"Put this on your laptop that you carry around. If the laptop gets stolen, you might be able to track the thief."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Wow, I don't care if you can get secret emails or not, that is just hilarious.

Call Centre Worker: "OK ..."
Customer: "How do you make the @ symbol... You know, for the email?"
Call Centre Worker: "You hold the shift key and press 2."
Customer: "Won't that just make a capital 2?"Posted 15 years ago # -
Well, Bubby, "How do this compare to so and so" is at least something about the software. That's why I've said before that the comments section definition is too broad - at least for some of the less than deep thinkers you get over there. Though, I'm not sure I could come up with a clearer statement.
What I think is inane was all the ridiculous crap about Ultimate Keylogger. It's a keylogger for monitoring activity on your computer. And the developer said it was a keylogger for monitoring activity on your computer. Yet, still.... And somebody was even dopey enough to say,
"Quite frankly? What an AWFUL name for a product.
Generally, nothing legitimate is associated with the term Keylogger. x]"What should the developer have called it, "Fred".
Yet all that stupidity on the 7th was certainly "comments on the software".

I post this not as a stupid, but as a funny, because I believe this ia a satire on GOTD posts, especially "I have no clue what this program does". There were already 3 of those long on the board when this was posted. If it isn't a joke, WOW! This was a late post - 5pm EST, but I believe moderated through much later - on ZIP, RAR, ACE Password Recovery, so not many saw it. I don't think that even with a language barrier - after all, the sentences are reasonably well formed - neither the poster or we could misunderstand THAT much. If this person actually was this confused, again, WOW. That would be "Alice in Wonderland" computing:
"Like many others I really had no clue what it could do and what it is used for. But by coincidence I came to know it and I want to share it with you.
The trick is you have to activate first. I did and was afraid I had to uninstall already but then I realized I did not install yet.
First I activated with activate.exe then something else became activated, a pop up informed me about that. I think that pop-up came from one of my 5 malwarescanners.
But last but not least another thing got activated being visible because a website opened telling me that everything was succesfully activated.
It worked very well like an activation cascade, leaving my machine superactivated. Then I installed the program and started it up. It was registered, but like I said before I had no clue what to do. So I tried to hit ’start’ with all the defaults set.
It was almost like nothing happend, but in reallity every thing happend very blazing much fast (remember that I had superactivation on). Then my discovery, this is for == password creation == and it is realy good at it. For research I looked in the install-folder and spotted a file called ‘default_english.kpd’. You can open it in notepad.
The software must have created it in a blaze and it was full with all kind of passwords, ready to be used. Very profound and very fast created.Thank you GAotD I didn’t know I was looking for this but I want it now very much. I will have good passwords now and will be using it everywhere, but it would be very nice to create the passwords in Turkish to. May be in the future."

I feel sorry for the folks at Krylack/Keylack software. Whether this stuff is good or bad, it brought out all the wackos. I posted some snide remarks in the comment section trying to get people back on the subject. I slightly regret that. I shouldn't take it so seriously. It does get frustrating, though, to have to wade through all the stupidity.
When I said it brought all the wackos, I mean ALL the wackos. Today, with the offering of Asterisks Password Viewer, we have even seen the return of the monumental brilliance of the great champion of last millenium technology (or king of lousy troll jokes), who shall remain nameless, ha, ha.
Software specifications:Win98, WinME, WinNT 3.x, WinNT 4.x, WinXP, Windows2000, Windows2003, Win Vista
Yet, our hero posts: "Will not work in Windows 3.1 (or 3.11). On my other PC with Windows 95, the app shows up in the taskbar but no GUI. Sad, real sad."
You're absolutely right! Sad, real sad! But, someone apparently didn't want him to steal the show:
"This is probably a useless program unless you want to stalk people. I vote it a 0/10."
ROTFLMAO! I would post a comment asking how exactly that would be done, but I'm afraid of the same danger from comtemplating extreme stupidity as I am from contemplating the mysteries of the universe. I'm afraid my head would explode. Believe it or not, this is not from the same person that posted about using Ultimate Keylogger to track your laptop, which might actually work.Posted 15 years ago # -

I found this one in the comments for AWicons pro. It took me several readings to puzzle out the fact he felt guilty about downloading a free program. Strange world we live in.
"I know I am a weirdo to even trouble myself with stuff like that, but in the middle of the installation I realized this was for HOME only, not BUSINESS environ, so I duly interrupted the process. (I know, I know, it’s stupid, it’s my Judeo-Christian upbringing my psychiatrist has so much trouble with.)
For several days, this had seemed like the first useful piece, and then this limitation."

Yeah, Frique, I actually posted a comment to this person trying to get them to understand that, if they were going to use this for home purposes, there was no ethical conflict. I suggested they look on the developer's website to see that the "business" license is really only a "bulk" license for pricing purposes, which is really all these developer's "business" licenses are, anyway. Even putting into a TOS that a software is freeware is only to keep a 3rd party from distributing it for profit, which is already covered under law. Somebody else posted to tell me tell me I was wrong and that the terms of service agreement clearly stated that a business user would have to purchase a business license. So I posted back to ask her where the download link on the developer's site was to the software that contained the "business" TOS, since there was only one link.
All this because the original poster didn't pay any attention to the GOTD license (the only one that applies here, obviously!) until yesterday. Suddenly, yesterday, they woke up and discovered this unique (to them) limitation. Someone else posted thanking the developer for posting the Pro, instead of the Standard version. I understand this confusion, but there isn't any Standard version.
That's the point of this post. I'm afraid a lot of the "stupid" comments we get over there are just because the poster is too LAZY to click on one link and go to the developer's website. It's the first thing I do.
"Mommy, I'm only 30 years old. Eating by myself is too hard! FEED ME, MOMMY!

You made a good post in yesterday's comment section watcher13 but do you mean I was wrong putting the icon editor on all the Departments computers. LOL

Department of Schizophrenia:
(Actually, Department of what's likely an otherwise intelligent person who probably didn't think through how this would sound. It WAS late at night, at least in my time zone.)"I also am getting the length can’t be less than zero error message. Worthless! although the converter GUI looks nice and it is a separate application. So you could keep it if it works."
Thank you, I might not have considered keeping something that works if you hadn't suggested it. What should I do if I'm not getting the "less than zero" error message?
My advice to even the best of folks is always the same. You'll come off looking better if you think before you type.

Oh those kinky Germans... :)
"hmmm pretty low sys reqs their website has a link to an independent test from a german magazine and the program rated well germans probably have a lot of viruses and malware - because of the porn i might try it should i uninstall my current antivirus or firewall?"
Uninstall your antivirus or firewall to try the German porn? Absolutely yes !

Good post, NBL. I just posted over there that today is one of the worst comments sections I've seen (along with some comments from me that I hope are more useful). A lot of people today who have, as we say, "just enough knowledge to be dangerous".
