you know, it's funny how a lot of reviews found fault wit the m517 about color fringing and noise- generally suggested going with the m417 (basically the same but lower digital zoom- the manual even covers both) as in 2005 it was $20 cheaper- now the same 80 bucks- or spending more for a better camera, most sans viewfinder.
grazing well back from the bleeding edge seems to work for me. onlything I miss (not much) is the dock has the tv-out, not the camera.
one of these days I'll get the $30 for one so I can use the big frame/focus screen...
and it's raining, nothing new.
copmom, try this link- http://img369.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sarcrop1ad8.jpg

copmom - I feel for you...
Start guessing MD-What Is It? #21!
Posted 16 years ago # -
MD #21.....A bullet casing? (Although I don't know why it would have a hole with what looks like glue on it) A copper pipe?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Buckleysmom - Sorry, not a bullet casing or a copper pipe.
The "copper" and green colors are paint. It was probably painted over 60 years ago. (Lead Paint?) Green was the original color but it's metal underneath.

looks more like an 'ol brass lamp socket to me.
ok, a lamp socket.

just had to take too many apart and fix 'em. the profile is pretty distinctive, and the push-switch rod showed, or it's shadow.
no shells I've seen have that ring at the top, either. student of firearms, y'know?

it's great to see people making their way over to this thread.maizey- i was about to curse you for another frustrating game (and i still might), but i started to get the hang of it. it's like shooting pool.

goodgotd - Terrific pictures of your little buddies! The pic of Bandit is huge and the top of the screen says: "This image has been scaled down to fit your computer screen. Click on it to show it in the original size." I didn't dare!

I found that "head lamp" at a yard sale, for 50 cents, several years ago. I'm trying to find out if it's worth anything more. I have a good friend who is an antique dealer but lives more than 100 miles away. I sent him photos but he wants to see it for himself. Who knows when we'll get together? Maybe summer because he sometimes sets up shop at a flea market not far from here. I have lots of interesting old items that I've picked up over the years. Maybe I can talk him into coming to my home to do some appraisals. :)

G010 looks like the edge of a pizza sitting on a piece of silver foil on a cutting board!
Your picture of mindy looks like the little kitty we've 'adopted', or should I say adopted US. It's still a stray, but I heard that once you feed them, they're yours. We're now up to putting 5 bowls of kibble out in the shed! We keep the door in place with a block of wood and a bungie cord to keep it from opening further and so bigger critters won't get in there!HEY.. I've been searching and searching for days now for an all in one printer (fax/copy/photo/flatbed scanner) that will take my cameras "smart card", and finally found ONE that's not discontinued! Not sure how good a brand Lexmark is, but it's their x8350 model. I'm more partial to HP, but they can't accommodate me and I can't see buying another camera that takes the cards most printers take nowadays!
Posted 16 years ago # -
copmom - I've had Lexmark printers in the past. They are reasonably priced and seem to hold their own for descent quality. Ink can be readily purchased at places like Walmart too. What DPI is specified for your model?
Posted 16 years ago # -
maizeydaze- right click on the image and save it, then open it in your viewer of choice, and zoom it.
These were indoor shots with indirect light from one window on a cloudy day, and bandit I had to use 'focus lock' on the white bag next to him and guess at the offset. Handheld, too- I haven't used my tripod at all yet.
You can count *hairs*, not just whiskers. Awesome.
And I'm still learning how to get better shots.
from a 2005 point-n-shoot that was less than 190 bucks street, 230 msrp at release.
Makes you wonder what current cams can do.
geeks they're back to 80 plus shipping, (they're around san diego, ca and shipping to here in oregon was $10 fedex ground) and they also have 1 gig (biggest it takes, ~400 photos at best quality) 80x fast SD cards for a 10-spot each.
I'm using a standard 1x SD card from a cheap mp3 player.
there are a few M517's on ebay same price buy it now as well.
copmom, lexmark ain't bad at all. Ink is spendy, (like, whose isn't?) the base models are literally cheaper to buy a new printer than ink for 'em.
And no, this item is only a bit over half an inch across, what you can see is one-piece solid single alloy metal and it's laying on a wood desk.

goodgotd - G#10 - Is it a ring for on a finger?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Ayep, that's it- I reveal a 10 carat gold tanzanite ring with one stone missing.
(I found the stone later on the carpet)
now I gotta upload more wallpaper, they're all public.
I just tossed up a couple of pix of rascal, our bobcat-lynx cross.
that's a one-pound chicken hindquarter he's chomping.
Posted 16 years ago # -
three now, they might make interesting wallpaper- one pic is 10 years old.

maizy.. on the lexmark x8350 the dpi in black is 1200x1200 and color 4800x1200. Also just found a Dell 968 All in one for $149 and it also takes the smart media card.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/All_Printers/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=223-4689and here's the Lexmark:
http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/902/0,6970,204816596_653293766_583522182_en,00.html?tabId=1good, maybe I've missed something, but what kind of camera did you use to take that ring picture? Jewelry is usually very hard to take pictures of because of the reflective. Great shot! And maybe something I've been doing wrong with the few pictures I've uploaded.. when I take photos I use high quality. But then I've reduced them using a image resizer to send photos in emails. Maybe I've uploaded the smaller jpgs by mistake, but thought there might be a limit on picture sizes when uploading to these photo sharing sites.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Good....Yeh, I thought that too when I guessed a bullet casing, but I figured, what the heck......I've been wrong before.....why change things now? Hey....maybe there should be a prize for the most wrong guesses. Oddly enough my first thought about #10 was a ring, but I kept reading and Maizey beat me to it. Your kitties are precious! Makes me miss my Heidi who died in 2004.

Ricoh RDC-4200, 1.3mp. macro to 3.2", the M517 gets to 4". http://www.megapixel.net/reviews/ricoh-rdc4200/rdc4200-review.html
I used macro mode and a 100 watt halogen worklight to avoid the flash, and this shows how I have it mounted for steady long shutter times and hooked up via a video capture card for precise focus.
imageshack has a 1.5 meg limit per image, that ring is 228k, the shot of bandit is 774k. I don't resize, only crop- and vary jpeg compression down only if I have to.
the M517 runs 1.7 to 2.5 megs a shot at top-q, which is all I use for any of my cams.

sorry, Buckleysmom, I've got many photos of pets that have passed on and we miss terribly too.

Good....yeh, it's amazing how they grab our hearts and hang on forever isn't it. But now we have Buckley who keeps us laughing. Here's a pic of him from when he was about 5 months old...I call it "Bad hair day"

copmom - Personally, I would go for the Lexmark based on the fact that ink is readily available whereas that's not the case with Dell. I'd hate to run out then have to wait a week to get more. It looks like ink prices for both are comparable but you might be able to find sales on Lexmark more easily.
The only experience that I had with Dell is via my sister. She bought a PC package from them because she got a supplier discount. The PC was okay, the all-in-one printer quit working just after the warranty ran out and they were supposed to send her a specific digital camera and they sent her a crappy cheaper one which never did work well. She tried to get the advertised camera from them. They said they were out and you get what we sent you. She had a lot of trouble with the PC but that was self inflicted because she didn't keep up to date on anti-virus/spyware. I reinstalled Windows XP 3X and spent countless hours on castlecops working with people to remove spyware for her. She just bought a new PC and it came with a 1 year anti-virus suite. I told her she'd better keep up a subscription with one after this runs out. I'm not going through that crap again with this one! I've come to the conclusion that some people should not be allowed to have computers...she's one of them. Her 7 year old son is very smart. Maybe he'll help her next time.

godgotd - More nice pics and handsome cat too!_____________
Buckleysmom - I love Buckleys baby picture! :)Posted 16 years ago # -
maizey.. I'm inclined to agree with you on the Lexmark. As for Dell, my computer here is a Dell that I ordered online to my specs. Gee whiz! 8/15/08 it will be 3 years old .. obsolete I guess? When I first got my machine, after a few things went, like the keyboard and mouse for starters, they finally sent an on site tech here to the house, and he replaced everything in it! Then he turned it on, and whammo, all went out again! Turned out the power supply it came with wasn't strong enough and was shorting out everything. So he came back 2 days later with all new parts again including a new power supply. My thought was just send me a new machine! They totally replaced it all anyway. Since then it's been wonderful! I did get a free Dell Photo printer 720 with it that prints color photos better than any of the HP's I have, but the ink goes quickly, as you said and isn't cheap. The printer does have a little box showing what's left and reminds you when you are getting low before running out. Did just notice that Staples and Quill now carry Dell ink.
Oops.. time flies.. time to feed the kitties, dogs, and perhaps us! Laters!Posted 16 years ago # -
MD#22.. a bell, belt buckle, ringer inside an old, old telephone?
Posted 16 years ago # -
