Sorry about that, My frustration sometimes gets the best of me. I tried your suggestions, but they did not work for me for some reason. I just want my computer back the way it was before I messed around with this program. I have seen several people complain of this same issue and I have not seen any exact answer on how to fix it.

Truth be known I think after proceeding beyond the confirmation that gets displayed showing what will be deleted giving you the option to select / unselect files from the "pending deletion list" I'm not aware of what you can do (if anything) to get the files back.
This is why software such as this is best approached cautiously - and I felt that people ending their trial in grief was a certainty. Many of the changes made using Glary Utilities are permanent. You will probably need to recreate the shortcuts manually.

Ok, total newbie question then. What will be the best way to proceed in recreating these short cuts? The easier the better....

Hi Bubby, (always my hero! lol)
I've been looking through the program and can't seem to find the restore function you mentioned earlier - could you please let me know where it is.
*sighs* I'm in SO much trouble with my husband over this. He has in the past warned me about downloading the majority of the system utility programs from here telling me that they are just plain dangerous.
It was my own stupidity I know :( because I simply thought I knew better and d/loaded it anyway. What an idiot. Now David's going to have to spend his entire evening fixing my errors.
At least I was cluey enough not to touch the registry cleaner itself. All I did was use the folders functions - however even my Windows system restore has disappeared now. On top of that the damn optimizer slowed my computer down, instead of making it go faster.
What a truly horrible piece of software. I feel like even more of an idiot because I have to ask you where the restore function is located - I think my brain is just panicking about tonight.
David just called from work and told me not to try restoring but to find the command and leave it on my screen until he gets home. I guess he's worried that I'll screw up my computer even more. :/

One thing I've learned is that a lot of the newer programs aren't like the older simpler ones where you clicked the button and then deleted the baddies by pushing another button!
You really need to look thru the files and folders to make sure they really do need to be deleted. I had dozens of empty folders, but after looking at them alot of them just happened to be empty, they were parts of programs that just hadn't been used yet but would be if needed. Take your time and read about the program before you start pushing buttons, no offense intended to anyone, no wars please...I'm SO guilty of that and learned some painful lessons because of it. I think this program will be great once I learn how to use it and keep myself away from just pushing buttons!
Under "About" it says "This product is licensed to GiveAwayofTheDay. Does that mean I'm registered? Or 'you're' registered? lol. I guess if somebody is it's ok.

Why do you continue to delete my on topic posts about Glary Utilities BuBBy?
Posted 17 years ago # -
A good proggy, I use cclenaer and lots of the other software mentioned, I checked out this utility and it worked great. It found 591 errors (after using the aforementioned programs mind you) and fixed them all. Now my remote to my game server works again FINALLY. It does seem to be quirky with the desktop shortcuts, but I only lost one and instantly replaced it. Be that as it may, I was so impressed by this utility I thought it worthy of creating an account here just to say so. It's already paid for itself, luckily I got it FREE! THANKS Gaotd!

Hello,
After checking out Glary Utilities, I am not that impressed. My main concern is the "Tracks Eraser" utility dose not function properly, in both Internet Explorer or Fire Fox, after checking the following boxes, running the cleaner 3 times and checking to see if the program actully did it's job after each run, this is what I found:
IE - URL History - cleaned
IE - History - cleaned
IE - Cookies - not cleaned
IE - Temorary Internet Files - not cleaned
FF - History - not cleaned
FF - Cookies - not cleaned
FF - Internet Cache - cleaned
FF - History - not cleaned
I have not had time to check out the rest of the "Tracks Eraser" utility, but for me if it dose not clean out the Internet files properly and dose not list what you are deleating, that part of the program is usless.
As for the rest of the utilities in the program that I ran, I found that the "Registry Cleaner" is quite aggresive, Use Extreme Caution with that one! At least back up your Registry and maybe set a System Restore point befor you deleat anything. The "Memory Optimizer", been there, done that befor, and will not go back. It is a lot better to instal more RAM. The "Duplicate File Finder", unless you have a lot of computer experience, I would not touch with a "10 foot pole" that utility can cause a lot of damage to your PC in a hurry, (pardon me while I sift though some BAD MEMORIES from a few years ago, after I ran a similar program), if there is any duplicates in the Windows folder, unless you are absolutly sure what thay do, leave them alone, they may be needed. The rest of the program's utilities, that I checked out seem to function okay, but is no better then what I have already.
Good Day and Good Luck,

Barry - I'd suggest trying the tracks cleaning for IE and FF while the browser is not running. I know with CCleaner it displays a warning that the FF Cleaning doesn't work if you do it while the browser is still running (I suspect this info is kept in memory and re-written to disk when the browser is closed)
Using Caution with Registry cleaning or deleting files (duplicate or otherwise) is always the safest policy. If you don't know what you are deleting - don't assume the program has your best interests at heart or knows what you want. The proposed deletions are displayed for confirmation for a good reason - so the user has an opportunity to verify the pending deletions are intended or to back out without making any changes or deleting anything. If in doubt - don't delete.
The registry cleaner will create backups of deleted keys, and can be restored by selecting the "Restore Previous Repairs" option.
The memory optimizer is a placebo for users who don't understand how windows Memory Management operates. It won't cause damage or wreak havoc to your system - but it won't optimize anything or give you any performance benefits either. It operates within the same confines and rules of windows memory manager just like any other application. Back in the days of Win95 or Win98 there may have been some circumstances where such a technique would have a place - but Memory is managed very differently in NT, 2000, XP and Vista and a "Memory Optimizer" is nothing but a waste of time and money.
I'm still looking for an automated way to re-create deleted shortcuts but haven't had any luck as yet. (It would be useful if there was a program that would scan a drive and create a folder of shortcuts to all programs found. Then the user could delete those not needed and group the remainder into related groups. This would be a lot faster than manually recreating all shortcuts individually. If anyone knows of such a program - there are a few people with empty desktops and start menus who would love to hear from you).

Hi,
Thank you for your responce BuBBy, Yes I realize that the browsers should not be running at the time you run a tracks remover, and they were not when I ran the 3 individual scans.
Without actully deleating anything, both CCleaner and Easy Clean listed all the files, cookies, what have you, in both Internet Explorer and Fire Fox, prior to the scans I made with Glary Utilities. I think what bothers me most about Tracks Eraser, it dose not list the files you are removing and you have to just hope that there is nothing in the process of cleaning, that there is nothing that should not be removed, that is needed, because as far as I can see when it is gone it is gone for good. Call me paranoid, but I like to have some control on what a program is deleating from my system.
Oh yes, the "Registery Cleaner" utility. Until a program has proved itself, I will not trust it to do all that it says it does, especially a backup restore for my registery. It is just to important, and just think, without a proper backup I could lose all these wonderful programs I have gotten from GOTD. LOL
I agree with you 100% about the "Memory Optimizer" utility.
For the "Empty Folders Finder" utility, I have never used one and from the experiences
others have had using the one in Glary I am glad I have not. Part of my CP maintenance I deleate the empty folders by hand, and if there is a problem, they are easly restored from the Recycle Bin.
Have a good one,

well, Glary made me decide to come here to chat, instead of the comments section. About time, huh?? I am amazed I have recovered my computer as well as i have. Still not sure if everything is intact, but it does reboot and I have my device manager back. That was bizarre, it was totally empty, and i have no idea what was causing it. I thought everything was ok, until i noticed I had no sound! The shame was, i did finally uninstall Glary, and now i have remnants hanging around, and can't go back and correct stuff, though i may look where BuBBy suggested, though i restored it numerous times when i was still running it.
I changed my screen name it Devlin, instead of Julie, so, Swan, I feel for you!! I haven't gotten chewed out, cos i think i fixed things, but i have the newer computer, and XP64Pro[not what i wanted,,,he wanted it!] and i sure don't want to mess it up! oh, and that lsasse.exe was actually lsass.exe, i believe, because i recreated it when i did a system restore and corrected it a different way.
I was just thrilled when my computer booted this morning and was still running properly,,, hmm, so far so good.
Thanks, BuBBy, i will read here more often, the comments ection is just for entertainment,,,duh....

Hi everyone,
Well, I downloaded a program called File Scavenger and it did happen to find a few shortcuts for me, but the majority are still gone.
There were some questions directed at me over in today's entertainment section that I think are more appropriately answered here, since it's not today's give away.
#60 BladedThoth:
As an addition to #53 (Swan): I attempted contact, not to have recieved reply on it at all yet. I hope this isn’t a sign of their support channel when it comes to issues of serious nature.
Figures. I'd have been most surprised if their customer service was any better than their software. As I said to you over in your own forum, It wouldn't surprise me either, if they've skipped the country after the outcry over lost files.
I am very grateful to you though. :)
#67 Mike:
and to ~ Swan, this program does not recover files, it “fixes” them, so you won’t be able to get back the shortcuts and folders you lost. (do microsoft system restore)
Yes, I realize that and as for Microsoft system restore - that has been affected too and it's as unable to run as any other program file with a missing shortcut.
#73 Ray:
Swan what system are you running? I run xp and Glary seems to run great.
I'm running XP Pro and sure Glary ran easily enough, it just sent everything in my start folder and all my other shortcuts into the ether while it was at it.
Sadly, I think I'll have to just kiss them goodbye. :(
~ SwanPosted 17 years ago # -
Hi, I'm mike#67, I don't think that it is the registry cleaner problem.....
I tested it out and it seemed to be the unstalled part that screwed the links and folders......Posted 17 years ago # -
It dumped my Desktop shortcuts and emptied my Start Menu folders after I used it to uninstall a program. Luckily, System Restore made a Restore Point before it uninstalled that program, so I was able to restore without losing any recent changes. I'm running XP Pro, too!

If I can add my personal experience, I tried GlaryUtilities as soon as I'd activated it, which was a mistake, as I was very tired at the time. I did the Registry Scan, and when it brought up a list of problems, I just trustingly clicked to make the changes. Next day, I tried to open the NTI CD&DVD Maker 7 (which was installed on my laptop when I bought it) and I got the message that the program was not installed properly, and that I needed to re-install it or contact the manufacturers.
The first thing I did was to open GlaryUtilities, go to Registry Scan and choose the Restore option. As soon as I'd restored the changes, NTI opened as usual.
Obviously G.U. makes more drastic changes than the (free) CCleaner utility which I've been using for a long while to tidy my registry without problems. Before changing anything I should have checked each item to see what it affected--but at least the Restore option seemed to work for me.
Unless you are an expert techie, I would use G.U. with extreme caution.Posted 17 years ago # -
Unless you are an expert techie, I would use G.U. with extreme caution.
I wouldn't touch G.U. and I suspect that any other "techie" also would have a list of 20 or more other products that do a better job with fewer problems - I have no desire to replace CCleaner which more than adequately meets my day to day maintenance and housekeeping needs.
When GU was offered - I asked myself "Do I want to abandon a product that works well, does what I want and has never caused me any problems - and replace it with a product I don't know, hasn't got the same userbase/testing, but claims it will do the same thing, will not be supported or upgraded unless I purchase it?"
I said "No". CCleaner is free everyday... and it works.

So I keep going back to the comments on this program and see that Glarysof replied with:
Thank you all! The shortcuts bug fixed, please update it to version 2.0.1.7, the activation is still work.
Comment by Glarysoft — May 13th, 2007 at 10:44 pmThat is great and all, but how does it work? How do I get back all I lost. I have tried several times to do a system restore and for every date I tried, I get a message that system restore cannot restore to that date. Am I doing something wrong or did this program mess that up too? Does anyone have a suggestion? Thank you.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well, and in all honesty, those updates are useless, I uninstalled Glary as soon as I thought i had corrected as much damage as i could. Glary scred me, and I have already installed CCleaner, since so many people have said nice things about it.
I will be the first to agree, I trusted Glary too quickly, i was thrilled it found so many things to remove, I knew i had some junk hanging around, but I never figured it would take so much necessary stuff, too.

Comment by Glarysoft — May 13th, 2007 at 10:44 pmOh no... Thank You, Glarysoft. (No apology for all the destruction caused by a bug in your product?) I'm sure the people who lost all their shortcuts will just love having another shot at testing the latest bug fixes. </sarcasm>

BuBBY, where did you get
Thank you all! The shortcuts bug fixed, please update it to version 2.0.1.7, the activation is still work.
Comment by Glarysoft — May 13th, 2007 at 10:44 pm?
what is the point of updating it if people already lost their shortcuts?
and I just want to make sure...
is it the shortcut cleaner, or the registry cleaner fault?
most people said that it was those two but from my testing it was unstall that caused the problem, well...
part of life, you have to sacifice sometimes, be greatful, at least it is only your shortcuts...lolPosted 17 years ago # -
Those whom don't understand the basics of System Restore and how to correctly repair your Windows install should be very scared. For the rest of us, it is a piece of cake. ;)
Other handy tools to have before problems arise and are free:
BartPE (emergency boot and manual repair)
ERUNT (backs up your registry)I love Glarysoft utilities by the way. It is great for experienced users anyway.

Hi BuBBy,
I hate to come off as a computer illiterate, but...
Well, ok, if I don't say it, it will become apparent soon enough. I'm a computer illiterate.Moving forward...I am pleased with the Glary Utilities software, but alas... I too see no registration code. Under "about" it reads "not registered", and in the registry, the registration key has a series of 6 or so # signs. I followed your instructions (within the limits of my understanding) for hhctrl, but after entering the terms I was at a loss as to reinstalling. Oh yeah....very early on, you mentioned extracting and running activate from download archive. Again, I'm at a loss.
Now, it won't surprise me if you are wondering where I got my license to drive a computer...my kids wonder the same thing(though they can't seem to help me with this little issue). However, if you could be patient with me, I would be very appreciative. (Don't expect any gifts... this is, after all, a request for free tech support on a free download... plus, I'm Dutch. I'll tell you thanks though!)
I'm sure you are ready for me to stop talking, typing, whatever, and...well, I'm sure you know what I'm looking for... possibly a more in depth explanation of the hhctrl.ocx or extract and run fix you mentioned earlier, or a different fix. (It will probably have to be more elementary than your previous ones to do any good.) Actually, and preferably, just reassurance (honest reassurance, of course) would suit me just fine. Btw... "created date" is May 10...maybe i pulled it from your archives? Hey!... is this where I'm supposed to extract and run activate from? (first mentioned solution)... The download archives, just like your post said?? It just hit me!
Btw...I don't have a license to drive a computer... and one more thing... if we can't gret to the bottom of this issue in a professional and timely manner... I may just have to blacklist this site! (joke...ha ha?)
Posted 17 years ago # -
jus to let everyone kno: when i use it to uninstall a program(can't rmbr wat), it ask me to delete a folder...
n guess wat??
it deleted almost all of my "All Programs" shortcuts!!!
My AVG 7.5 , MS Office shortcuts disappeared?!
hopefully there is an update for the program
Posted 17 years ago # -
@alexiussg - There is an update on their website (2.0.1.7)
http://www.glaryutilities.com/download.htm
I don't think it fixes the damage - just prevents it from happening again (apparently)
Posted 17 years ago # -
hey, well...I have done a little more to try and have evidence of registration with this utility, but to no avail ... just thought i'd share that with you all.
