Yes, Steams annual Christmas sale has started and wow there are some amazing bargains, for example you can buy Square enix's complete catalogue for only £49.99 a tenth of what the games would cost if you bought them individually (Like I did). There are other package deals and you can also buy items from these packages at a generous discount as well. Many recently released games are also reduced such as Mafia II. you can now buy it for £13.99, less than half what it cost four months ago when it was released.

I'll be posting details of all the best bargains over the next day.

When I saw this was up on Steam, I knew you would be happy WR. There is a staggering amount of stuff here, so I will be looking forward to your comments and recommendations.

I might be more interested in some of these packs if I didn't have so many of these games already. I'm starting to think I should just buy games at the Christmas sales.

Thanks sandman, your link does provide a little help with this monster sale. I am going to try sorting by % discount and then look at the prices for titles of interest. One thing to note is that for at least the Indie packages, they show the % discount and the total price of the package as a whole for each individual game as well as the pack as a whole. For example, there are five games in the Indie Kids Pack and each of them shows a 92% (like Crayon Physics Deluxe, Max and the Magic Marker, etc.) discount and $4.99 price as well as the pack as a whole showing the same thing.

At these prices I expect that my already large backlog will be growing more. And I think I will be getting more titles that I already own on disc just for the convenience of Steam. BTW, there are some great prices on the Indie packages. In some cases I will probably be getting Indie packages where I already have one or two of the titles in the package.

I spent quite a bit last year at the Steam sale,still not played all the games I bought,so decided in advance I wouldn't get any more at this years sale.........

Unfortunatly I've cracked already and bought F1 2010,but that's it this year (maybe).

haha I know what you mean. I've also still got games from last year that haven't been played yet; though most were gaes from large packs.

I think you missed Trials 2 75% off $2.50. At least it available here in the US.

WR, I was surprised by your low score given my recollection of prior comments you had made about it. It seems to me that things like the limited interest group for this sort of game or somewhat dated graphics (how much were they updated in the new version?) would be reasons to rate it below games like JC2, AC2 or CoD4. However, even if the large number of add-ons(a positive to me)and high price of them (clearly a negative) aren't necessary for the core game, it seems like it could be a value at this price (85% off) if it is the sort of game you find interesting. The way I look at it, if I don't think the add-ons are worth the price, I don't have to buy them.

I have avoided this in the past because of the price and a large backlog of games that I have. However, at this price, I am thinking it might be interesting to give it a try. I would be interested in any additional comments you have about it. Is there any problem with playing the game without any of the add-ons? How dated are the graphics? I have heard the trains are good, but the scenario is pretty weak. In a game like this I think one of the joys can be viewing different scenery. How is the game play? How do you play it? Do you play the scenarios, just tool around the countryside, or play it in some other manner? What type of difficulty levels are their and how are the controls?

With reference to your comment on the Humble Bundle thread; I am amazed at how cheap Valve can reduce so many games, even loads that have only recently been released. Though I suppose it'ss supply and demand. Many would not purchase a lot of these games at full price, so hopefully the developers of these games will get a decent profit out of it. I wonder how much of a cut Valve gets for selling these titles? Hopefully the profits will go towards a Half Life 3 sequel. :)

I think the keys to the Valve sale are volume and growing the user base. Look at the Humble Bundle 2 sales. They have brought in over $1.5M so far. With the standard split that would be about $200,000 for each of the five developers. Recently a portion of the new money has started going to the Bundle 1 developers, but that is a new development and people that already got #1 may be still giving all of their payment to #2 and charity. Most Indie developers would love to have sales of around $200,000. That is what volume will do for you and the same phenomenon occurs with Steam sales. Additionally, expanding your user base gives you a better opportunity to sale add-ons or future games. None of these developers is forced to use Steam or provide a discount on their product so I assume those that do consider it to their advantage. Of course they would prefer us to buy direct from them at full price, but I am optimistic that these sales aren't too negative for them and may be better than business as usual. I know I buy games I wouldn't normally buy at full price and like you I still have games around from the last Christmas sale that I bought and haven't played. I am buying games now I may not play or treat like a demo. If I don't like them I just won't play again and won't feel too bad about it since I didn't pay too much for them.

In my last message yesterday I somehow left out that I was talking about your low score for Railroads 2. Do you have any comments about my questions relative to that game?

Sorry Campy, I’ve caught the bug my daughter had last week and am feeling like death warmed up, so have not read many comments properly. I gave Railworks such a low score because I just don't think it's good value for money. The base game IMO is sadly deficient especially when I compare it to games like Trainz; which, although not as graphically pleasing as Railworks 2 has a mass of content in the base game compared to Railworks 2's base game. I don't regret paying over £700 for my Railworks collection as I love the game, but I do think for what I've got it's far too expensive. (The add-ons are very insidious in that I really didn't realise how much I’d spent until I saw the whole lot in a half-price sale last month, at a cost of nearly £400. Paying between £5 to nearly £20 in dribs and drabs really does give you a false sense of how much you are paying; especially as I rarely think about the amounts, I just buy the game without thinking about the price.

As a standalone for non-enthusiasts to try I should have given the game a higher score, but I was thinking in terms of how I feel about the game I would probably give Railworks a five star rating, especially with the discount, but I still think the game is sadly deficient in content IMO, (which is why I've purchased all of the add-ons - Over 60 of them, ranging from around £5 to nearly £20 per add-on). I would actually recommend purchasing the latest Trainz game and the three main add-ons, rather than recommend buying Railworks. Railworks 2 was definitely made for expanding and unless you're willing to shell out for at least the more expensive add-ons that add new areas to explore as well as new rolling stock and scenarios to try I would say it's better to purchase the Trainz collection as ultimately you'll have so much more to play with.

You’ll have to excuse the long winded explanation, I’m finding it hard to concentrate at the moment. I do hope I made myself clear. For the sale price I’d probably go ahead with the purchase, but I still think paying a little more for the Trainz collection would be more satisfying.

Thanks for your comments WR on Railroads 2. I will also take a look at Trainz.

I found that ars technica just had an article on Indie game pricing that focuses on the Steam sale. It is pretty positive about the sale. Here is one quote:

"Jolly Rover was also part of one of Steam's recent holiday bundles, packaged alongside Gish, Puzzle Agent, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, and And Yet it Moves. For one day, all five games cost just $5. And despite only getting one-fifth of the bundle's revenue, with nearly 47,000 copies sold, Goulding said he still made more revenue in that one day than he had during the game's entire life up to that point."

The only flight sim better than this one is the 'true' flight sim Rise of Flight {WWI})

Death Spank 50% off £4.99 *** (Hardly played this yet, but wasn't impressed. Need to play it longer to give a fair assessment. If you like funny dialogue then you'll like this one)

Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic 66% off £6.79 ***** (This is the best one yet with a first person view of inside the submarine as opposed to a point and click effect in previous versions – If you like sim games like I do this is one to buy)

Patrician IV 75% off £6.25 **** (If you like rts games this a nice looking one. Not my favourite, but very playable. I prefer King Arthur and the Total War series)

Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition (Not played this on yet despite buying it in the summer sale).

Blur 50% off £9.99 **** (Nice racing game. I’ve got most of this year’s racing releases and love them all. Each has it’s own merits - if you’re looking for a racing game then this is well worth it for the discount).

Darksiders 75% off £5.00 **** (Well worth the measly £5 that Valve are asking for. A third person perspective puts some off, but I enjoyed the little that I’ve played. Not had time to immerse myself fully yet as there have been too many good games released this year)

Risen 50% off £9.99 **** (I bought this last year and was hoping for an Oblivion like experience. I was let down big time, but that said, it’s an okay RPG game. Still got to get into it though. Again, got other games of this genre that I’m still playing. For £9 you can’t go wrong; wish i'd played it longer to give it a fairer comment.

Mass Effect 2 50% off £9.99 standard Edition, or £14.99 for the Deluxe edition. ***** (Brilliant game. Nuff said. I got the deluxe edition and was glad. :)

Mass Effect 50% off £4.99 ***** If you get the second you must get the first, though it’s not required. It’s just such a steal)

Alpha Protocol 75% off £5 ***** (Given this 5 stars on the basis of reviews I’ve read. If you like espionage this is a game for you. I bought it at full price but not got around to playing it yet. Darn it should have waited. Only £5 now).

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising 85% ***** This is ArmA II’s cousin. Some developers in common. Great military sim though not as expansive as ArmA II; however, just as exciting and hard. Not your COD run and gun cinematic game, but a true military sim that’ll have you crawling through the undergrowth trying to get a clean shot of the enemy. Beware though they shoot back with deadly accuracy) Brilliant game. If you were only going to purchase one game from this bunch I’d pick this one, but then again, true military sims aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Amazing graphics.

Dead rising 2 50% off £14.99 **** Got this on pre order and was hoping it would replace Left 4 Dead a little but so far only played it twice online with friends. Sometimes you feel like your walking through treacle. I’ve not given it a fair chance yet though. It has a single player campaign and coop play.

Battlefield 2 Complete Collection 75% off £3.74 ***** (I played this for nearly 3 years non stop excluding all other games that I bought. There’s hundreds of gig’s of extra content that you can download for free and despite the game now being over 5 and a half years old it’s still supported by the modding community and is a brilliant game.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Collection: all 75% off ***** (These are beautifully made squad based shooters; the last two Advanced Warfighter games I highly recommend especially for the price. Go the whole hog and get the earlier games. Graphically the earlier games are looking tired, but the game play is second to none when it comes to squad based single player games.

The opening part of the game involves you escaping from prison then taking a hectic boat ride, all of it scripted; but once you’ve completed that it’s all open world mayhem if you don’t want to follow the various missions that are handed out.

Borderlands Game of the Year edition (includes all expansions 50% off £14.99 ***** (You can buy individual expansions for £3.05 each. This is a great game that lends itself to co-op play. Though the last and only time I played it it gave me an head ache. I think I needed to adjust my mouse sensitivity. That said, the game of the year edition is a steal at the price. The graphics are made to look like they’ve been painted in; similar to Street fighter IV and one of the Prince of Persia games. Personally I’d have like more realistic graphics, but the rendering doesn’t spoil the game.)

ArmA II 75% off £4.99 ***************** (This is my favourite game of 2009 and 2010. Fantastic Military sim on the lines of yesterday’s Operation Flashpoint, only ArmA II is better. There’s an increasing number of custom made missions being made by the ArmA II community. This is a true military sim that means you don’t play it like Call of Duty 4, 5, 6 or 7. IMO this game is far more satisfying and more realistic than the COD series will ever be, though COD do have nice scripted cut scenes that ArmA doesn’t have (apart from the latest add-on called The Private Military Company. The base game is brilliant, the add-ons and expansion are even better. You get three very large theatres to explore and a new area added with the PMC DLC

Counterstrike Source 75% off £3.49 (More people play this online than any other online game – between 70 to 100 000 play every day.)
Fallout: New Vegas 40% off £17.99 (Brilliant Sequel to Fallout 3, though it has been plagued by bugs since it’s released several weeks ago. Still at 40% off it’s a bargain. The bugs should be fixed eventually. A large patch has already been released, but it failed to fix some problems. That said I’ve not had any problems since playing it for around 70 hours.)

The developers packs continue to be sold at massive discounts and indie Packs with five ames for less than £4 each. Amazing bargains. I just wish I had more money to buy the remnants of the Steam games I still want.

One other deal today is the King Arthur Complete Pack for $5.39 (something like £3.74 I think) This is like combining a role playing game with a game from the Total War series. Great buy at this price.

Ah yes forgot to add that one. In fact it's my favorite rts game, though i love my Total War games as well. I much prefer empire to Napoleon though. hardly touched Napoleon and have for the first time ever not bothered with an exppqansion. (The Napoleon war expansion pack. decided not to bother with it until they are literally giving it away. I believe there's a new total war out in the first quarter of 2011; though I've forgotten the name. Love the original King Arthur release and bought all the expansions. It's a steal at less than £4. I'd recommend anyone that hasn't got any rts to purchase it. It's great fun as well as gorgeously sumptious graphics with some extra's that the total War series doesn't have (i.e. magic).

I have never bought from Steam, so what does it mean when I have to install "Steam"???

Also, how long is your download good for??? I have run into ones that if you don't pay extra or buy the CD, go poof in a year!

Not good at this game, but I just love to watch it, and I can't beat this price!!!!

Ah yes, I remember now. I'm really looking forwards to that. The whole series started with Shogun. I always liked the first one, but compared to later titles it's rather tame graphically. I'm relly looking forwards to getting the latest one. :)

Hi Suki, you've got about four hours for the latest deals, though for the indie games till the 2nd January. Once you've purchased the games that's it; it's yours for the duration. you just have to install the free client and set up an account. you can get the client HERE. They sell a lot of arcade games now and you'll find weekday and weekend sales every week, with special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, summer and thanksgiving as well as Valentines and Halloween celebrated with massive savings on hundreds of games. I wasn't keen initially; in fact I purchased 2 games from direct 2 drive that forced me to install steam. i wasn't pleased until the following weekend they had their weekend deal which was five indie games for the price of less than one. I was hooked within weeks and have since bought hundreds of games from Steam. (I've bought over 960 games since starting to use Steam back in January 2009) :)

sukibabe: Yes, you have to install Steam. It is a great service and I have never had any problems with it. They have loads of games and some of the best prices. IMHO, their holiday sale is the best opportunity to buy games.

Download are good as long as they are in business, which will probably be a very long time as they are easily the leading download service.

I already have Obulis on Steam. I think I got it last year as part of their holiday sale. However, I have not played it yet. Your comments with WR about it (in the Caesar Quest comments) have gotten me interested so I think I will have to try it.

Flatout Ultimate Carnage 90% off £1.70 *********** (Superb demolition derby like game with loads of extra content. Too much to mention here. Fantastic update from Flatout 2. If you have Flatout 2 this one really isn’t needed unless you want the improved graphics and an extra 4 cars to race against. Basically a revamped Flatout 2. This is also another recommended purchase).
Flatout 2 90% off £0.60 ***** (Amazing value for money. This is the same as the ultimate edition except fewer cars to race against {8 instead of 12} and the graphics are a few years earlier)
Flatout 90% off £0.50 **** (Not as good as it’s brothers but still delivers some excellent gameplay. One fault that many complained of was the poor hold vehicles had on the road surface once you’d crashed. Sometimes it was almost impossible to get back on the circuit again; well, at least to win a race. Still, for 50 pence it’s a steal.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 50% off £19.99 ***** (Great game, but I still wonder how it can hold it’s price so well compared to many other games that in my opinion are much better value for money. The scripted single player missions soon get boring once you’ve played them once. However if you like to play online this will give you a superb experience. There are add-ons available that add more multiplayer mayhem. You don’t often see it so cheap so grab it while you can).

Batman Arkham Asylum 75% off £3.75 ***** (Great game, superb graphics. It delivers the game play)

Sid Meiers Civilization V 23% off £22.49 **** (Was a little disappointed with this one. Already they have released at least 5 expansion packs all adding new civilizations. Why I ask weren’t they included in the main game in the first place. IMO, there’s little to distinguish this game from series IV. Very disappointed so far with this game. Plus they are only offering 25% off. Still it’s only been out for several weeks).

Monkey Islands Special Edition 50% off £3.49 ***** (You can't go wrong with either of these packages. It delivers one liners over and over with traditional Game play and the ability to switch from the re-mastered version to the original you’ve got yourself a classic here for not more than the price of a British Rail sandwich).

Dragonage Origins: Ultimate Edition 50% off £12.49 ****************** (My third highly recommended purchase today. The Ultimate edition includes all expansions and both main games. This is a superb RPG, though I recommend once you’ve got it installed before you start playing it go to the Dragonage mod sites and download the texture pack. The developers have definitely skimped on a lot of textures. One modder has redone all the important textures which improves this game a hundred times {well maybe an exaggeration}, but it’s well worth downloading. There's enough game play to keep you riveted for months IMO) :)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 66% off £6.80 ***** (what a deal, if you like Call of duty style games get this now. IMO it's better than COD. This isn't the usual formula you'd expect from a Battlefield title. no open maps, more like a scripted Call of Duty game. I was disappointed at first because I loved the Battlefield series and the way it played, but it does deliver on brilliant game play. I preferred this to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Apparently many say the online experience is better than Call of Duty's online game (I haven't played the online game) and there's just been a Vietnam expansion added, but thats not included in the sale.

Todays Indie deal is 85% off AI War: Fleet Command at £1.80 (a steal at this price) You can also get 50% off the two DLC's Children of Neinzul and The Zenith Remnant.

I want to second Wrabbit's comment about AI Wars being a steal at this price ($3.00). It is a very deep complex game though with good AI so it definitely won't be right for some.

WR, thanks for continuing to post these. Your recommendations and the Didimatic list of sales pricesthat I learned about from graylox have been very helpful to me in sorting through all the holiday sales.

Ditto the F.E.A.R. pack, those are some great games with some creepy gameplay. Good all-around FPS. The included expansions have a decent amount of content as well. I got F.E.A.R. 2 and the expansion the other day as I already owned the first one and its expansions (which are free) and the individual games are all on sale as well. Really a lot of gaming for the price there!

For anyone who likes the Mass Effect games, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is on sale for £1.75. This was also made by BioWare and has a really great storyline, especially if you like Star Wars, plus light and dark side endings with lots of options along the way. Has a Metacritic score of 93! Sorry I was a little late with this one (Still 21 hours to got though). My family have just got back from their ski trip so was 'interacting' lol. :) Anyway, here's the latest deals:

Cities XL 2011 50% off £14.99 ***** (If you’re into City Building, this is a brilliant game. Better than any that have gone before graphically, though it doesn’t have some of the features of that other well know city builder for example hurricanes, floods etc, though fires will break out at some point. Still a great game with some amazing maps. You can even connect all your cities together).

Eve Online : Incursion 75% off £3.74 (You need to pay a monthly fee for this game. I’d love to play, but I’m not going to pay out monthly fees – from what I’ve seen of this game, it looks beautiful).

Tom Clancy’s Hawx 2 33% off £20.09 (I’ve not played this one yet {ran out of space on my Steam HDD}, but the first one plays really well. It’s an arcade flight sim so you’ll find it much easier to play than a true flight sim).
