Strange problem: Inpaint has disappeared!

Hi, I downloaded, installed and activated Inpaint from GOTD. All was well, the activation "took". I had used the program several times, it was fine. But today, when I have started up my computer, I have noticed the shortcut missing from my desktop. So I go to make a new shortcut. The program folder of Inpaint is GONE! There is nothing.
I have no clue what has happened. I did not uninstall Inpaint, but it is completely gone.
No one else could have uninstalled it, this is my own computer, in use by myself.

This has never, ever happened before, my other GOTD software is still here. I have checked the Virus vault, just in case. There is no trace of it, it has just completely disappeared.

Hello Toris,
Do you have Kaspersky Antivirus?
And, is it set to automatically delete what it finds?
I do, and it just popped up a message on my computer that says it has found some trojan called "Trojan.Win32.Agent2.ctje" inside the InPaint.exe.
But, because I have Kaspersky set to notify me/prompt rather than delete what it finds I was able to prevent it from deleting Inpaint.
So, I guess your anti-virus HAS deleted Inpaint, however I don't know if GAOTD has scanned this prog since it was last given away last week so we shouldn't assume this is a FALSE positive. The computer it was uploaded from could have been infected at the time without the user knowing it.

Interesting that this never came up when this was given away & installed recently but was caught just now after my antivirus prog updated its definitions. Either it's simply a false positive, or a new trojan that was still unknown to antivirus programs at the time it was in the GAOTD.

@Toris: If you still have the original giveaway package, you can try reinstalling from Setup.exe. The registry entries made by Activate.exe should still be in your Registry, so you don't need to run it. If you don't have the package, try downloading from InPaint's website.

Sadly, it is no to both. I use avast, it did not alert, plus it would only have deleted the file it did not like. Inpaint is completely gone. Including the whole entire program folder, the registration, everything. It is as though it was never installed.

It is impossible.

Have you tried reinstalling yet? Chances are the registry entries are still there, unless the uninstallation routine was somehow run.

Yes,
I tried to reinstall, it was just the trial version.

Everything has been wiped out. Which makes no sense, I never uninstalled it, and most times when you DO uninstall something there are leftovers. In this case, there is nothing, not one trace of inpaint has remained.

I cannot understand how this has happened, I used the program yesterday, the icon was still on my desktop when I am shutting down, but today it is gone.

Do you by any chance use a program such as Returnil Virtual System or Microsoft's Steady State?

No, this is my new computer and I have not yet fully decided which security scheme I am going to use.

I have checked already what it came with, and the programs I have installed. Nothing that could have caused this :(

The strangest part is that it was fine before. It ran perfectly, and then it has just disappeared. I do not know what would remove it completely either, most security softwares just take the .exe if they dont like a program, but this is gone entirely. Everything of this program is gone, its folder, reg and there is no trace at all. It is really as though it was never here, and that makes no sense at all.

I am checking my other softwares,and so far they are fine, nothing else has vanished.

I've had something like that happen to my computer before. I had an installation of BZFlag. Although I haven't touched it for a while, I knew it was still there. Went one day to play it, and the shortcut didn't work. Upon further research, the entire program folder was gone. I think Windows ate it. If there are no other software on your computer that might cause something like that to happen, I'd imagine it's the filesystem or the way Windows handles stuff. Do a disk check: chkdsk /f /r It works best if you're not booted from the drive you are checking.

Interesting idea. It never occurred to me (my computer rarely ever have problems that I'm not willing to fix manually). Yeah, try that. You should be able to restore to a "System Checkpoint" on the day you installed InPaint.

I do suspect there are some look-like-red-herring registry entries for inpaint, but aside from the key, these three may be what locks the gaotd version down:

"NoModify"=1
"NoRepair"=1
"InstallDate"="20100712"

and I don't see how those could cause this problem. no possibility of having accidentally done a system restore to before installing inpaint?

I don't think that's the right registry key. Those are what would come from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. They should not be present in InPaint's program key branch.

Did you by chance uninstall a previous version of Inpaint? It seems that is exactly what I did and now I have the same problem, Inpaint is gone. The icon is still there but it is dead.

I installed the newer version and afterward, uninstalled the older version. I only went to check on it after reading this thread and sure enough, it is gone. I do have Better Jpeg and Image Mender so all is not lost but I liked having a choice.

I just re-ran the 'set-up' (only, not the 'activation') and it seems to be back to normal now. Even the icon is working again. I will have to keep an eye on it to see if it reverts back to a trail version but for now seems to be ok. Wow. :)

Outlook Express is missing only have the folder size 0 bytes C:\Program Files !!

Problems here as well,Inpaint.exe quarantined because of "Trojan.Win32.Agent2.ctje"
removed files from quarantine,tried to open program,in it went again.Have had Inpaint on pc for a couple of years now with no problems,just seems to be this version.

I have been looking into this too.
Strange thing was ,it only affected the setup file of Inpaint.
(but the main exe in the setup ,Inpaint.exe was 'clean').

Anyway the good news is Kaspersky updated its signatures:

(a-squared still gives a troyan alert)

So if you're a Kaspersky user and you still have the Gotd Inpaint setup file,you can re-install Inpaint with no problems
(provided you did run 'activation' on the day of the giveaway).
If you haven't,take a look in your quarantine folder and use the programs interface to restore.

In Xp:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kaspersky Lab\AVP9\QB

In Vista/7:

(it has a .klq extension)

I leave the setup files on my machine and go in once in a while and clean them out. I am glad I did since it saved this software for me. I'm the same way with purchases, I don't throw out the box right away, I wait a few days to be sure things are working properly. (no, I don't have a house full of empty boxes) ;)

Well, I keep boxes too, so there! Not indefinately, but long enough to make sure I don't have to return something, like you!

boxes, receipts- drives my wife nuts but I save 'em until at least until I run out the return period- longer if the box is well suited to return shipping for warranty. camera copies of receipts & UPC's stay put forever.

And I save *everything* to DVD-R. at 20 cents each, it just makes sense. I keep all the giveaways [and anything else- and I use a utility called filenote to add descriptions to freeware, etc.] I download, all notes, and user comments.

but I'm an extreme case.

Same thing happened to me Toris. Looking back my lavasoft adaware notified me of 2 trojans after scan . I cleaned out the trojans and on reboot noticed windows (windows 7 64 bit ) removing inpaint. coundn't stop it

I also lost my version of InPaint as a result of my anti-virus. I was able to get it back by downloading the demo from CNET. I now have full version 2.4 working with no problems and I am able to save my images.

The former activation only worked for the Gotd build over here.

I wonder why it differs from the download version on Teorex though(maybe they're working on the issue-file version over there is dated 07/16 01:19)

Luckily, mine is still working - I assume because I did not have a previous version installed, which I did not need to uninstall prior to this GOTD upgrade, thank God!
