Have I been missing something, or is there a new 'sticky' on the bottom of Giveaway of the Day's main page? Is there anyway to permanently get rid of it -- it stays fixed at the bottom of my screen, even in its collapsed form. Figures -- it's by "Informer Technologies." Thanks!
"Bookmark and Share" ???

Yes it is true there is a new bar at the bottom of the site to promote spreading the word to other sites. If you do wish to remove it and have a plugin for firefox or chrome like I do that hides elements on a page you can as it is in its own div titled "linkInformerDiv". Perhaps other people will come forth with more ways to remove it as they have the Stickr. But GiveawayoftheDay adds these tools for a reason and the reason for this addition is to spread the word to your friends and get more people here so I highly recommend you make the most of it and use the new tool.

"so I highly recommend you make the most of it and use the new tool." Well Chip, although I appreciate your comments and suggestions for hiding it (which I was able to do for Stickr in IE7), I ain't making the most of it when it constantly blocks a portion of what I'm trying to read when I'm scrolling, AND I don't care to use it anyway.
I'll try to figure out how to block it in IE7; thanks for the div title.

You have got to be kidding me. They thought Stickr wasn't enough?!?! They already have a share button on the side. Do then need another big obtrusive one on the bottom? I'll update the AdBlock Plus rules to kill this one.
Upon closer look... It looks like that big bar replaces the old Share button. Where did they go so wrong?

Taking a look at the Stickr comments and you can see that's a fail. Time to drop that me thinks.
On another note... I'm not seeing this thing on the bottom you're talking about, So I must have something set right. :D

For the record I'll unequivocally state; GOTD Team, what are you smoking? Are you people high or what?!!!
While I think their desire to continue growing the readership is perfectly understandable, this new method chosen to hopefully achieve that growth is not. In my opinion the inability to hide this new informer bar will have the opposite effect. I feel it's a high pressure tactic! It's annoying and makes me want to skip the comments all together. To me the comments are what I liked most about the site. To me it's as pleasurable and as relaxing as starting the day with a good breakfast, a cup of coffee, and the newspaper use to be. I only hope the team is diligent enough to watch those numbers carefully, and not fall victim to the hype Informer Technologies will throw at them should those readership numbers dive. I can already hear what Informer marketing will say should that happen, "Give it more time", "Why it took our other clients a little bit longer before their readership climbed, so we can assure you yours will as well, trust us!" Yea right, I'd trust an internet marketing company about as much as I'd trust BP saying "It really wasn't THAT much oil, we'll have it cleaned up in no time at all, and we'll pay for everything!" (which means the price for gas at pumps will go up to about $27.50 per gallon)
The bottom line is that it's in Informer Technologies best interest to have GOTD continue following their recommendations because that's how they make their money. And with the almost unimaginable number of sites on the net no one is going to lose any sleep should GOTD go the way of the dinosaur. I can only pray that doesn't happen. However, as a hard core and long time member of the GOTD clan, even my patience has limits...And That's Nothing to lol About!

If they had been smoking decent weed, they wouldn't think about adding annoying pop-ups and follow-me's to the site. Coke or meth, smoking those might do it.
But yeah, the logic sounds about right. If you can't be google, at least try to find a niche and milk it for all it's worth.
FWIW, I use firefox with noscript, the only thing permanently allowed is the base giveawayoftheday.com, and I've never seen stickr or this new whatever.
I didn't set out to do that, exactly, it's just my personal desire to allow as little of any website I visit to let it work, and ads- targeted or not- google-analitics, (I also use the google sharing plugin) doubleclick, and all the rest never show on my screen. Or get a shot at my browser. <shrug>
Sure, I'm paranoid. Have been since about 6th grade. And don't put me on Xanax, I go to world-class paranoia. But even paranoids can have people after 'em, and it sure beats the alternative.

Hmmm . . . one day later and I'm not seeing this 'thing' any more. I'm hoping GotD removed it as a result of our feedback! If it's gone permanently -- Thank you, GotD!
Posted 14 years ago # -
Not Good to stop as it helps to pay for the giveawayoftheday they not like it if we all stop it, You can stop with Firefox NoScript RequestPolicy Adblock Plus
Posted 14 years ago # -
Drats -- guess it wasn't gone permanently! This 'thing' is back again! There's another similar thread here about Hiding advertising/useless elements. So far, none of the directions suggests how to block this in IE7. I tried adding *.informer.com in HOSTS, but the 'thing' is still taking up real estate at the bottom.
If anyone has been successful in blocking it in IE7, I'd greatly appreciate your help. Thanks!

Well, for me, it just showed up for the first time. Yep, it was 'in my face', but, I found the good ole collapse button on the right. Hopefully it will stay collapsed, but likely won't.
As for the Stickr button, I don't know how to get rid of that.

I guess this thread is the only place for me to give a thumbs down to the feature. Just having the links on the front page is enough I would think. Most people who use the features on the toolbar would look for the links on the front page anyway.
BUT... GOTD should try whatever avenue they can to promote themselves, and new avenues sometimes need feedback to establish themselves or get dumped. I've gotten a lot of good free software here and I could care less what they try.
More traffic = more feedback = more developers interested = more and better software at GOTD.
Posted 14 years ago # -
IE7 (IE period) is just not a sensible thing to use- I'm running Firefox with NoScript. never see that stuff.
Posted 14 years ago # -
goodgotd - with all due respect, I wasn't asking for an opinion on IE; I was asking if anyone has been successful in blocking it in IE7 and, if so, how they did it.
Posted 14 years ago # -
and that's far from just my opinion
Tru dat.
Posted 14 years ago # -
I'm all in favor of a 'bookmark and share' button spreading the word and all that...if it only weren't that big and annoying.
So...I blocked it in both IE and FF for now.Posted 14 years ago # -
2-SHEDS, I agree the site needs as much revenue as they can generate.

on the other hand, I do my best to pass the word on to the few people I interact with, and 15 years ago even the US government broke down and admitted I was about as much use as a turnip. totally, permanently disabled- and at the poor people's food help place the wife and I together have less income than would qualify a single person as under the poverty line. so gaotd doesn't lose any income when I block the ads.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Hey GAOTD, you missed a spot--if I squint just right, I can still see some content behind all the garbage you've added.
There are better ways to promote yourself than opting for intrusive obstructions that annoy and piss off your users.
Posted 14 years ago # -
He's right.. if I squint I can see the page behind.
How dare GOTD put some thing in the way of my free software ! So intrusive.. Obstructions up the ying yang... I want my free softwware unincumbered by "toolbars" and "sticky" notes. In fact can't GOTD just e-mail me the software and I don't even have to come to this site and see the horror...
WAAAAAAA!
Posted 14 years ago # -
Ha, lol. It's more horrible for GOTD to email attachments than anything. It's so 10 years ago.

How dare GOTD put some thing in the way of my free software !
Has nothing to do with putting "some thing in the way of my free software", and everything to do with making the site user-unfriendly and just plain unpleasant to visit. It's not that difficult of a concept, really.

one might profitably take a gander at hitler's take on the lack of spine on YouTube's part- at the very least it's amusing, and rooting about the related videos (the original can be found on FreakBits, via Vimeo though with a much different slant) surely is amusing, and possibly thought provoking.
And if I might suggest looking a bit farther down the list of threads, more information might calm the rants. It's 'hiding' in plain sight.
FYI, I have not personally seen a trace of either Stikr or Bookmark and Share in my life. Ever.
I had to wait for somebody to complain about it to know it's there. And I don't care enough to look at it.
But then, I've been around a bit longer than most here, I suspect.
Ok, triphammer, hotdoge3 & 2-SHEDS, you got me beat. On this site, by some months.
But how many of you can honestly say they started on computers in 1976?

Something else that's not too difficult of a concept is disabling the stikr and toolbar in your browser so you don't see them. Really.

Thanks for letting me know about 'no script' for firefox! Just installed it!
Posted 14 years ago # -
To Robert: Many thanks for coming to my rescue :)

Absolutely. And that's the first thing I did. That does nothing to change the fact that your average person on the web doesn't know how to edit their hosts file or add custom rules to AdBlockPlus--just check the stats on the percentage of users still viewing the web with Internet Explorer.
And a good number of those people just won't return to a site that starts popping up useless junk all over the page. Some may tolerate it, many just won't bother.
And then there's the other folks who, rather than support rotten marketing, choose not to visit because they don't want to reward the behavior.
You guys can justify it all you want and go ahead making fun of those who don't agree with you, maybe you'll get some brownie points for your unquestioned loyalty and defense of GOTD--good for you! But those with common sense see it for what it is, and that's low-rent, bush league garbage.

That's not fair! There are many sites that either work better with IE or don't work at all elsewhere. When Pepsi had that promotion through Amazon.com, you HAD to use IE. It would not work on any other browser.
I have some survey sites that give error messages if I try the survey on FF but work on IE so I tend to use IE for surveys (other than ZoomPanel)
If you find yourself using Microsoft products (like Live), you find yourself using IE because Microsoft products do not work well elsewhere.
Also, I use IE for "throw away" sites because I clear the cookies frequently there and have cookies turned off on FF.
Give us some slack. We use IE because we have to and to call us dumb or dense for using it is not fair and is very insulting!

"As for the Stickr button"
I don't usually click onto the Stickr button, but somehow did yesterday. What I read on there, particularly one post, I wouldn't want children to read, let alone myself. If that is the sort of stuff GOTD wants to allow, they certainly won't have <b>me</b> fooling with it, anymore. ;)
As for IE, I use it all the time, and have very few problems with it. One of the main reasons I do is simply because I like saving web site shortcuts to my desktop. Yes, I know I can do similar with FF, but with FF I get 2 things - a file folder, and the actually shortcut I want to save - which adds up to clutter.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Hey, don't bash me that hard- my 3com OfficConnect 3C858-91 Router is the homepage for my IE icon, since the patched firmware I hammered out of one of their engineers *won't save the settings* under Firefox. So I gotta use it, and yes, if I simply cannot get a web age to work with firefox, I try IE. 6 on the laptop and the wife's XP Home, and 8 on the 2 XP Pro systems.
(heck, I'm in the US, I don't have a choice, removing IE kills XP!)
As for clutter, bloody save them to a *folder* on the desktop, and every so often go in and set 'sort by' to type rather than name (under 'view'), and move the dang shortcuts over to another folder inside that one!
As far as dense or dumb- I'm both, these days. Apply 30 mg of valium a day to a 160+ IQ and on a good day I run maybe 80-90. with a memory span measured in fractional minutes.
Bad days I can't figure out how to get out of bed. Which is why I have a 1999 Gateway Solo 2550 win2k laptop with a toasted battery on a shelf I screwed on the side of the bed frame.
But things I learned *before* the meds often are accessible.
