I think this one is a different species, but could it be the other sex?

this one's way too easy, but it was handy: G What is it n012.
darn near everyone has one.

Goody, I see what looks like a spring. But, I've got no clue what is might be attached to. Any hints?
Posted 16 years ago # -
most people have them, try and use them daily, hidden but felt? over 3 feet long? and more than one in the sample.

replacement spine for politician...

LOL @Violet!
Can't be a spring in a mattress, could it?Posted 16 years ago # -
[grin]
good one violet, but too stiff!
yep, copmom, that's got it- I'm taking apart our old mattress for parts and to fit the leftovers into our station wagon to take to the dump.
soon as we get back from wal-mart I'll set some pix up- what do you want if not flowers? assuming I've got some- or can take some- I'm easy.

my answer was leaning toward "replacement spine for borg" until maizey asked for a hint...
yes, i'm nosey...but i like to learn, too...what replacement parts are in a mattress?...

I suppose I should have said 'parts usable for other projects', as repairing a mattress- while not impossible if you're hard up enough and willing to walk the walk and pay the price- isn't at all fun.
However, things that can be used elsewhere, ahh- there I see items of use indeed.
for example, after peeling the cover and outer layers that have been grimed and stained by 30 years of use off (the handles may be saved yet) I found 4 (2 top and bottom) serviceable moving pads to keep furniture from rubbing against and damaging each other in transit- other uses abound- and a pair of half-inch open-cell foam pads, all 6 feet by 7 feet (california king). just need aired out.
add the to-be-liberated edge rods of roughly 3/16" diameter and high grade steel (my next macro focus paddle frame this should do nicely for), and then there are 6-foot [under tension] extension coil springs and ~6 inch compression springs to be had- the center rows of compression springs should have lots of life left for vibration-damping platforms or centering.
plus all those lovely steel crimp connectors to hold things together. I grant that the spot-welds are going to be a bit of work breaking, but worth it.
all in all I expect about a third or more of the whole mattress can be salvaged and put to good use in a variety of projects, [saving money and the hassle of finding parts of the same quality] and the rest will be easily carted off to the dump in our station wagon, saving gas and hassle over getting the use of a pickup.

pending feedback from copmom, here are some not-flower shots.
first up is a nice ford ranchero- I have another 15 shots of this from various angles- a shot of the timbers supporting the train tracks, then on to a couple of foliage shots. this is the common horse chestnut; those leaflets are 9-12" long. and this is a tree-of-heaven that has taken over the northwest corner of my property. alas, the closest one is male.
be warned that though it's called 'chinese sumac', it certainly isn't a sumac, and is as or more invasive than rambler rose- hard as that may be to believe.

Well I'll be a dirty bird! I actually got one for once!!!!!! Hooray! Goody, those cell foam pads do come in handy. We've bought them purposely to make a too firm mattress be a bit softer! My question to you is this: WHERE are you storing all the things you're keeping for a rainy day?? Aren't you going to end up with piles and piles of 'stuff'?? LOL
As for the horse chestnut, we had 2 huge ones removed .. one was hit by lightening, and they were a BIG pain. Every time hubby had to use the riding mower, we had to rake up all those burrs first so they wouldn't flatten the tires! And some of the burrs were in bits and pieces, thanks to the squirrels. They don't feel too good if walking outside barefoot either!Posted 16 years ago # -
nets under the trees to catch 'em- those are the chestnuts!
what other kinds of pix you prefer?
I have a large shop to store parts in.
yep, piles is about right, but it stores well if you know the tricks.
Posted 16 years ago # -
The pix you've been sending are just fine.. they're all great!!!!
Posted 16 years ago # -
trees, landmarks- want more angles on that ranchero? (I'll post those in the don't read general thread) shots out over town with the hills behind? or you prefer shots sans buildings?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Just post.. they all sound good! *smile

Hello Vanessa!
You have been a forum member for a year, yet this it the first time I can recall seeing you post. I'd like to welcome you to this "little" (3622 posts) game that I started on a whim 4 months ago. When I checked your profile I noticed a thread that looked very interesting. One that I'd never knew existed, called First! Introductions....! This may be something that should be brought back to the top of the forum. But, then again a new topic has been started that is very similar, called where am i. I don't know. Anyone else have any ideas?
_____________________________________________Goody, I have no guesses to you pic, yet. :)

Vanessa, I'll second the welcome!
maizey.. maybe we should bring back the "First! Introductions" to the top. The "where am I" is mostly people just telling 'where' they are, but the other can encompass "who, what, when, where, etc." It's more fun reading about all the different types of people we have on here, and glad I had a chance to read up on some of the people I've been chatting with here all along! Like, I've been catching drips and drabs of whiterabbit's problems, but on the intro. it explained why.Posted 16 years ago # -
Hello everyone !!
I am going to guess a grate for a drain system to keep large things from in the linePosted 16 years ago # -
yes ch33to, it's a storm drain grate.
here's some pink veined white sweet peas, some yellow dahlias and a mighty ant. (that's an oat for scale)
Posted 16 years ago # -
Wow... GREAT GUESS ch33to and great shots goodgotd!!!!!!!

well, when it rains, the hospital is where the water from all that landscaping and parking lot area funnels past and under.
I gotta understand what something is before 'what is it' is possible.
I got to looking, and there's a *huge* area that drains to right there only.
so they have these oddball super-duty drains in grass funnels along the 'front'.
plus a decorative plant/water recirculating garden setup complete with a waterfall that becomes a very respectable river in time of need.
cool stuff. dunno what it is, mostly, but cool, including a bronze statue of a doctor fishing. gotta hunt that up.
Posted 16 years ago # -
hi all, thankyou for the welcome :)
Yes, I admit to being out of the loop for the past year. 'Spose I should check up on what I said in my intro, but the Introductions forum was a great idea!
Now I'll be game and post a pic. Starting with an easy one.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3215/2648446739_867655893b.jpg?v=0
