Well I got Stopple installed and running. Seems like a pretty good brain teaser, and I love puzzles. Keep the good ones coming and thanks a bunch!

I see why you are the "King Of Reviews" Stephen! Excellent work, something I could never attain to! Great job, and many thanks for the kudos included within it! Maybe this venue will turn out to be something big. Think of it, a thread that has posts numbering well into the hundreds... Members getting lost within it's vast halls, aimless wandering for weeks at a time, only to ultimately call 911 for a Search and Rescue attempt.. Bwahaaaaa

@ copmom Nice to hear you got it installed with no probs. Have fun, but not too much fun, eh? :-)
Posted 16 years ago # -
At least when you 'fall off' you don't have to restart from scratch!! Let's you keep on going! Not too much fun? I'm on my 4th go around on Rise of Atlantis!

It's a nice game FWF. Thanks! And thank you WR for your review. I seem to remember playing something like this before... ? Drat, so many lovely games, so little time:)))
Posted 16 years ago # -
You're welcome, Idahl! Just wait till you see the one tomorrow!! ;-)
Posted 16 years ago # -
I think it's great that you are putting links up for free games :) I'm not really understanding why people are complaining...free is free....and maybe one of them was similar to what has been given in the past, but maybe some people didn't get the games before or reformated their pc's....this just my opinion
Posted 16 years ago # -
I think people take it far too seriously (and personally) if a game or program is something they don't want or like. Just like life, "GOTD is like a box of chocolates..."
This site is proof that your can't please all the people all the time. Unfortunately for a minority, it is "you can't ever please some people". It is pointless to get upset or concerned with the habitual complainers - don't let someone else ruin your own enjoyment.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Looking forward to it FWF! I'm addicted to the one today! Heheh, not very good at it though. It plays so smoothly, seems really, really nice for an indie game.

OFFERING FOR DAY #3
Ok, today I thought maybe you all could do with something a bit different from what is usually given away over at GGAOTD. I haven't noticed a good racing game offered from any of the software authors, so we're going to take care of that right now.
Available for your consideration today is a game called Trackmania Nations.
"Racing fans once coughed up money for this great 3D racer. The coolest part was that people created all sorts of insane tracks with the built-in editor. That's when the pro gaming circuit took notice. Now, fully sponsored by the Electronic Sports World Cup, this game takes the checkered flag at the Freebie 500!!"
Race on over to http://trackmania.filefront.com for your download. Scroll down about 1/3 of the page to the section titled "Track Mania Series Files Top 10 Downloads this Week", and you'll find the game download link. Also notice the patch just underneath it, and several other addons and mods available. And even further down the page, you'll see many custom tracks that other users have submitted.
If you like to race, then I'm thinking this one will occupy you for a longggg time!
Enjoy the journey. :)

Thanks FF. As soon as the hubby has time he is going to check that out. He like racing, fishing and golf. (Hint! Hint!)
Doing a great job there.
Posted 16 years ago # -
First off,
FreewareFan THANKS for for the AWESOME links!!!!!! ;o)Second, do you think the TrackMania Patch (1.1) is needed,
since the current version of TrackMania Nations Free Game
was added months after the patch?
(I may just be being thick, or missing something here,
I'm definitely not a proffessional gamer! ;o) )Thanks,
MagicMan aka BillPosted 16 years ago # -
Good question, MM. I'd say if the installed version of the game is higher than 1.1, then the answer is no. I'm not a pro gamer either, that's WhiteRabbit's dept.. :-)
You are very welcome, and hope the games bring you enjoyment!
Posted 16 years ago # -
TrackMania Nations is a BLAST!!! THANKS FwF!!!
But, to all, be aware that if you play 'online' with it, the Licence Agreement states that there may be Adware!

I got two CD copies of this bundled with two motherboards several months ago. For a freeware game it's fantastic. I've been too busy today to review this game (I have a mod that’s in it's alpha testing phase called Marines for the FPS Battlefield 2 to test and a beta test map for the recently released game called Crysis, so have been totally absorbed)
MagicMan, once you've installed the version that FF has linked you to, boot the game up and you should see the version number on the first page. If not, check out the credits which are usually at the end of the help menu; failing that install the patch. If the game has already been updated you should get a message saying that you have no need to update. You can't retro patch the game basically. I'm no expert though, just very enthusiastic about games.
I will endeavor to write a review of this game later today, though it depends upon how I'm doing with the beta testing, the game we get in the morning (if it's a repeat I’ll have more time, and also I have a physiotherapists appointment, so I may be wiped out for a while, lol.) It’s definitely worth reviewing.
Basically it’s like a build your own race track game, , (using the editor). Though there’s already one there for you. As FreewareFan so aptly put it, it’s insane, but very playable. For free this is a very professional package. The game has spawned more commercial versions that I’ve considered buying, but I’m still playing my last years need for speed game yet (Carbon) so haven’t bothered. I’m actually more into the Rally fraternity for te time being, though I quite like Auto Assault style games. There’s an online version called Darkwind that I got involved with when it first started up a couple of years ago, that is really quite fun. It’s a turn based car wars game (War on Wheels) Check it out by following the link below: (sorry FreewareFan, I hope you don’t mind me invading this thread of yours with other links?)
I’ve just copied and pasted the first paragraph from the home page (below)just to give you an idea about the game. It is still being developed and this is the second year it’s been up and running. “You wanna join a gang”; then go and check it out via the above link
Quote:
Darkwind is a turn-based, 3D persistent-world multiplayer wargame set in the near future, which combines the depth of detail inherent in turn-based games, with long-term strategic elements that keep the challenge going for months/years. The game is staged on a sparsely populated continent, one of the few surviving areas of civilisation. The focus of the game is on vehicular combat - cars with guns - both in the wilderness and in manmade arenas and racing circuits. Gameplay is split between a web interface (for strategic management) and a 3D interface which supports Windows and Mac OSX (for control of your characters and vehicles during a combat or race)
p.s
I didn't realise that Tracmania Nations was abandonware

sorry FreewareFan, I hope you don’t mind me invading this thread of yours with other links?
Nope, don't mind a bit, WR. I'm considering abandoning this thread anyways. I believe it will be too difficult for new members to navigate after a few more days worth of posts, so I believe I'm going to switch to a daily thread continuation of this format. Easier for searches and such...
Hope your therapy goes well!
Posted 16 years ago # -
That's a very good idea. :)
Posted 16 years ago # -
I think a new thread for each day is a great idea.
Thanks for the links to the games. I just starting playing stopple, and it seems great.
Thanks,

I've deleted this as it as a double post

I have to agree with you Idahl...there are just too many games around that are excellent to brilliant, plus of course the usual average game. And that’s only looking at one genre at a time. (I rarely label games as rubbish, though I’m sure there are some) Despite having a lot of time to play this stuff (being retired due to an accident back in Sept 05) I never seem to get deeply into anything simply because there is too much. I rarely finish any of the big budget games I buy, for example, I bought Silent Hunter 4 the day it was released and only played it for an hour, (that was last March 07) the same happened with Armed Assault (Feb 07) and BF2142 (Sept 06) etc etc etc. Most of the games I keep from the Giveaway project end up just accumulating simply because there are too many to play. And, after the accident, I went through a phase of buying one or two arcade games every day for months to help me through the day, simply because I found them to be very good analgesics (pain killers) as they distracted me from my pain. I recently bought Action Ball 2 and Hyperballoid 2 from Alawar, apart from a few days of frenetic activity playing both, and despite their obvious improvements on the originals as well as my love of arkanoids in general, I’ve already abandoned them for pastures new. I bought CoD4, Crysis and several other expensive games recently, but have suddenly got a renewed interest in RTS (real time strategy) games (thanks to Deep Quest) and am now digging out all my old ones. I've installed at least four on my computers over the past week - Cossacks Caesar III, Pharaohs, Age of Empires and that old classic Civilization II) and have ordered new ones such as World in Conflict and Empire Earth III. I’m not trying to brag about all the games I have or buy (some would probably think it’s obscene almost – especially considering the state of the world in general – for e.g… someone in Africa could probably survive for weeks (or even months) on what I spend on games in any one week) I’m just trying to make a point. And as I said in another thread I love games

WR, I never knew I could be good at playing games until I found GGAOTD. I loved reading about them, I had even made a few for baby grandsons, but I thought I was basically a loser when it came to playing them. With so many to try I found there were a few that I really enjoyed and those I played quite a bit...guess what? With practice I got much better at playing!:)))Duh! I just had never found the types/quality of games that interested me past a demo. I love the breakout games like MagicBall3, Hyperballoid and AquaBall. Age of Japan I played over and over, loved it! Right now I'm playing a game I found called Gem Towers, which is a free 3D match three from hell, I have only managed to get to level 15 so far. I really like Diamond Lines too. I have a nasty cold(so I've been a fuzzy head for the past few days)it snowed yesterday and so I just indulged in a day of play. I'd finished Ravenhearst on the timed mode(I got it from a link here in the forum)so started over in the relaxed mode. I had more fun than the first time, I had skipped some of the puzzles the first time because of the time factor, so it was like playing a new game.
Do I dare admit I loved the Brave Dwarves here? Hehe! What are those games like Dragon and Tea time called? I just got a new one called Azteca.
I noticed you like Gish and Gum Boy, I've played the demo's and think they are brilliant. I am like a kid in a candy shop... oh, I guess this means I really love games too. :)))Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi Idahl, yeah me to, (re: the sweet shop analogy), lol. Where did you get Gem Tower from? I'm always on the look out for good games, both freeware and commercial. Have you tried Tower of Goo yet? I posted a short thread about it in the software talks section of the forums. It's pretty basic, but because it's unusual I like it and because of it I pre-ordered the soon to be released World of Goo. It’s basically a physics based game, which is what I like about it. :) Here’s the link to the thread:

I'll also admit I like the Dwarves series. I prefer the second series though, partly because of the sparkling graphics, but for game play either of the series will do. It was the Dwarves series that got me interested in platforms as before that I'd always disliked them (for some unaccountable reason). I didn't realize that there was so much variety, and hadn't realized that Gish and Gumboy were platforms as well. Have you tried Wik and the Fable of Souls? Now that is obviously a platform game, but what a beautiful one, with my favorite theme --- something unusual….I actually downloaded it initially because of its title. Anyway, I’m glad I did as it’s got some delightful idiosyncrasies. (wow I spelt that one correctly on my first attempt, lol) You can get a demo from the following link:

Finally another one I’d recommend, that comes under the banner of platform and is a great puzzle game with excellent physics is called Barrel Mania, in which you have to move barrels from point A to point B using various tools such as magnets, springs etc. You can download it from:

Have a great day full of games :)
p.s.
I’m never much good at most games I play either, well I think I’m not. It’s one of the reasons I shy away from online play. I used to play a free first person shooter called Americas Army with several friends. (Which is as good graphically as most fps games you can buy off the selves). We ran a private server, so playing online was actually a fantastic experience. But playing on the public servers can be really frustrating, especially with all the flaming and cheating that goes on. Playing amongst friends is much better as then you don’t have to worry about people flaming you for being to slow at doing such and such, or whatever, lolPosted 16 years ago # -
WR, my oldest son found Tower of Goo a couple of years ago... it always amused him even though it wasn't a FPS(the kind he likes the best). I'll share these links with him.
Here is a page that you can get a review and D/L of
Gem Towers: http://www.thegamecreators.com/data/newsletter/newsletter_issue_41.html#6
I will give you a hint that I didn't have when I started playing(no instructions/help file)matches can be made diagonally/up-down and sideways. Truly 3D. Beautifully made in Dark Basic. I don't remember where I found it originally and I'll warn you that the maker's (Paul Varney)website has been taken over by an ad page:(
My sons have tried to interest me in online play, but I'm too horrible to even take more than a peek around. I like watching them play though, they make it look as simple as breathing.
I've only played the second series of BD, the ones that were in packs, I even finished and won one of them! Hey, that's a biggie for me:)))I am getting better at playing the Gum Boy demo. My nephew bought Gish after he played the demo I had. He is in school learning game programming. I'm a graphic artist and we've been talking about doing a game together.
Wic's graphics are stunning, the artist has a new title just being released. I've never played Wic, just drooled over the graphics! :)))
I'm going to go take a look at Barrel Mania now... so little time ...so many goodies:!!
Let me know what you think of GemTowers.
Sniff* sneeze!! cough, cough, cough!!! I need chicken soup!!!Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks for the link Idahl. Your name is similar to my sister in law who is called Idalia (she's Polish). If I like the game I'll write a review and post it here.
What's the new title from the developer of Wik? (I'm being lazy here, lol)
Also what fps games does your son play? I play quite a few, but as I said not on line any more, though I'm considering a foray into the servers soon as some of the group i used to play with hve been mooting a reunion online. My main loves at the moment are Crysis, CoD4, all the Battlefield series (despite the first being 5 years old), Stalker:Shadow of Chernobyl. Brothers in Arms, Armed Assault, Oblivion plus the Unreal Tournament series (well the last thee UT3, UT2004 and UT2003). There are loads more, but these are the ones I'm trying to concentrate on - when I have the time, lol :)
I hope you get well soon, When I'm ill I have to go for something else. I can't eat chicken soup as I don't eat meat anymore (I haven't since 1989) though I do miss the taste of chicken still sometimes. I usually have a honey and fresh lemon with a shot of whisky in it and also a crushed up paracetamol, though I have to be careful with the alcohol due to the opiates I take every day. :(
Posted 16 years ago # -
WR, my name is actually L Dahl, though as I've told a few others, I'll answer to Idol...hehehe! ldahl is just lower case. I'm still sick tonight so will get you the answers to your questions tomorrow as I'm about through with today(or it's through with me).
Oh, you watch it with the whiskey and opiates Mr. Rabbit, you will fizzle your fuzzy tail off! :)))You are needed too much around here to become fried rabbit!Posted 16 years ago # -
Hey no problem there as i've probably had no more than about10 units of alchol since my accident in 2005. I don't like mixing opiates and alcohol together. Just one glass of wine for example feels like I've had the whole bottle (which was the norm wen I was a student; but those days are long past. I'm not teetotal, but almost. Thankfully I've not had need of my oney and lemon laced with whiskey since before the accident as I rerey mix with the outside world these days (unfortunately)
I do hope the weekend sees your rapid recovery.
By the way Tower of Gems is a superb game. I'll definitely be writing a review of it when I have the time. Thank you so much for that little gem. :)
