Haven't had much time to ferret around in the forum archives, so I only learned about x-cleaner from a Dell gold techie who had me run it on my supposedly clean machine. ("supposedly" because I already use 5 different scans on a regular basis) Darn thing found 2 bugaboos, including an instance of that bonzibuddy crap. I coulda sworn my existing defenses already blocked/purged that one.

So, what didja think of scriblink? Wouldn't be surprised if there were other free whiteboards out there, I just haven't had time to check.

Hey, I don't know what happened to the full text of my post. My draft clearly directs visitors to the FREE online scanner in a box on the righthand side of that page. It's possible that in cutting, copying, pasting and guzzling eggnog, I didn't grab everything. hic hic hic At last glance, x-cleaner on-line is still free.

Coincidentally, I just learned that GAOTD PM's get truncated if one tends to pen longwinded novels the way I'm wont to do.

So, what didja think of scriblink? Welllllll, I wasn't going to comment, 'cause I was brought up that if I couldn't say anything nice, not to say anything at all... So...... But since you asked, here's my honest opinion, two thumbs down. Did you actually go to that site, and check it out yourself, RM? Because having to write with an oversized pencil, like they used to make me use in 1st grade, just doesn't cut it. Really, really clumsy, and there's just no way I could communicate with anyone using that interface. Having to hand draw each and every letter, well, let's just say I lasted there for about 1 min., then closed the page....

But, like I said before, I do thank you for sharing the link. You never know, someone else might just think it works a treat! :-)

Now, kick down with those other links you alluded to, yes?

FwF, I did indeed go to the site, and even used the service to post a typewritten note to a colleague in the far north along with photos of the gifts I wanted. I was able to point out the exact color and/or model number of each playmate. In turn, he was able to cross out the inflatable gifts he wasn't packing, and even sent a snapshot of the reason. Apparently, the poor polar bears are having a little problem finding seal meat in the melting arctic slush, and are resorting to eating his reindeer.

Seriously, if you explore the capabilities a bit more, you might discover that it isn't limited to "hand drawing individual letters".

It features a real time chat side bar reminiscent of Yahoo's old chat function. The value is that unlike Yahoo chat, scriblink can be used to upload drawings of top secret bank vaults, last wills, complex mathematical equations and let multiple participants kibbitz, i.e., offer helpful comments or ridicule your latest idea in real time. Or, you could play tic tac toe or Hangman with Uncle Herman in Oshkosk. Sure, a wacom device would be helpful. Hey, that was on my list... and it wasn't crossed off!

Hey RM, Nope, I did not know about those other features. I didn't stick around there long enough to find out, so bad on me for that one! I take it all back, and I'll personally phone the Big Guy up North, and confirm that you do really need those *personal assistants*..... :-)

@FF: I went back to X-Cleaner, and RM is right, the online scanner appears to still be free. By clicking on the box on the top right, I get here: http://www.xblock.com/onlinescan.php
Do you find it's a good scanner? If so, I'll added it to my toolbox. I don't know enough myself, to determine if it does a good job or not.
And could you also post the other scanners you use/recommend? Thanks.

Also, I have a TON of questions about HD Imaging, back-up, Acronis, XxClone, etc...
Do you have time to help me out? If so, when and is there a thread where I should post it? I know everybody is very busy, I don't want to impose.

WARNING, lame jokes in the road ahead:

LeKanaw, as I originally posted, a DELL gold tech (certified, not a newbie in a foreign call center) recommended x-cleaner, and it did catch something on my supposedly clean machine. I think it is worth keeping in your arsenal. I'd planned to post links to all the scanners I use, but it may be awhile. Look for Thingamajigs Part Deux, Tres and Beyond.

Can't help you on the HD imaging thing. It is my fervent hope that somebody will post a list of cloning & imaging freeware and confirm that they can definitely save all my GAOTD progs. I really don't want to have to fork over $$ for Norton's Ghost only to learn it won't save them registration key-controlled freebies, especially considering how badly Dr. N treated me during the 90's - terrible documentation, botched patches, etc.

As for the problem with mango juice and other surprise nostril-launched projectiles, might I suggest this:

Imaging/Cloning: Indeed, I'm getting very nervous, that after so much reading & studying, I still don't have a plan to backup our PCs/Laptops. We only have been backing up data, but none of the OSs or Registries.
I don't particularly care if the s/w is not free. I just really really need it to be accurate/reliable/friendly. Many ppl talk about Acronis, but it's just that at $55. each, times 5 computers... it's steep! I'll pay it, but want to make sure it's not a mistake or there is something better out there.
Just as we were going to buy Acronis, someone posted that "XxClone" was free & better than Acronis. I have a list of free & commercial imaging s/w, been reading on all of them, but I'm still confused!
Furthermore, what is the difference btwn a OS Imaging backup and a Registry backup. Maybe a Registry backup is what we need for our "keys"?...
Anyway, don't want to hijack your thread w my worries.
BTW, I don't know much, but I do know that Norton's Ghost is NOT good.

L, my attorneys left for the holidays back in November. Pls advise your crew to leave a well-documented complaint in the hermetically sealed jar on Funk & Wagnall's porch, and my boys will pick it up sometime next year. FWIW, they text messaged me from their island retreat not to worry (that cost me $400, thank you very much), that I'm not liable for damage done by people who bring food into the workplace.

I agree that Acronis' apparent lack of multiple seat discounting seems a bit daunting, but if you've got enough critical stuff to fill 5 computers, then either you're a very successful entrepreneur who can afford the $250, or you're not compressing those porn videos correctly. :-0

If nothing else, why not CYA, download XXClone and DO SOMETHING quick instead of waiting for a sign from godot that Acronis is worth the money? At least you'd have backups of something. With the cost of memory storage falling faster than Hillary's approval ratings, perhaps it might be wise to invest that $250 toward a terabyte of external storage onto which you could dump all 5 computers? HP offers one for about $550.

Shneier makes for a good read, as do a few others, but I've precious little time to scan all the blogs. Thanks for the links.

@ LeKanaw Hello there!

Well, first, Yes, the new project is well under way with Gizmo. I was accepted as an editor, along with about 37 others, so we make quite a diverse crowd. I forgot to get back to you on that, so accept my apologies, eh? I've been busy with the new format that will be used there, which is another reason I haven't been posting on this forum as much lately. But to answer your question, yes, the project is most certainly going forward, and I believe you and most everyone else will be pleased and surprised by the new format the *list* will be taking. Good things are ahead!

Now, about X-Cleaner, I was talking more about the program itself, that can be run from my computer. I don't do the online scanning thing.. never have. I have reasons for that which I won't go into now. Anyways, I did go back, because RM seems to swear by it's qualities, and I installed the trial version, which they say is 100% functional, and good for 30 days. After installation I updated the signature file, ran it, and it reports that I'm clean as a whistle, so that's a clear bill of health for me. I didn't expect it to find anything in the first place, but as was the case with RM, you never know, right? :-)

Now, about you starting a thread for questions. Just go to the "Talks" section, and start a thread. I'll do my best to help you with anything you have to ask, as I'm sure many others will be too! I know the Mods are knowledgeable about many things, as well as several other members that have a lot of information. So, between a group effort, we just might be able to help you figure out what it is you want to know.

Lastly, you asked me to post a list of scanners. I'd be happy to, but it will be in a couple of days. I've got some other things that need doing first to fulfill some commitments, and then I'll post a list. But in the meantime, I'll share with you my own personal opinion that's been developed over the years from personal experience. Presuming that you do NOT visit questionable websites (Porn, S&M, Deviant Relations, etc), you know, the kind of sites RM is known to frequent LOL ( Hey bud, you're still my pal, don't worry!), and also presuming that you do not download pirated software, nor visit sites that advocate such software, the chances of your computer becoming infected with a nasty is only about 5%. I know I'm opening myself up to a major flame by saying that, but it is my experience and opinion, having dealt with this stuff a LOOooooong time. It is my opinion that if you get a GOOD education about how to avoid things like that in the first place, you'll be much more safe than just running a scanning program and relying on that to protect you. I mean, let's face it, the script kiddies that make the trojans and buggieboos are so advanced that they can get around just about any program ever made to keep people safe. That's why those programs always have to be updated with new definition files, cause the bad boys are always coming up with something new that bypasses what they currently use as protection. In other words, those companies are ALWAYS playing catch-up, you see? :-)

But like I said, if you get a GOOD education about how to be safe, and add to that the fact that you are not a major corporation that stores a goldmine of information on your hard drive, then your chances of getting zapped are minimal, in my opinion. But be advised, there will probably be a torrent of posters saying that I am COMPLETELY wrong, and that I don't know what I'm talking about. Well, they have their opinion, I have mine. Bottom line is that the companies who sell scanning programs are in business to make money. Can they make money by telling you what I told you? Hummm?? And yes, I know that there are several sites that will offer you a free online scan, but I'll save that touchy subject for another time... Do companies need that kind of software, YES! Do private individuals with a GOOD education and safe internet habits need it, 95% NO.

And with that, any popularity I might have had on this board has probably just dropped through the floor.... :-)

You also did not quote me in full context. I did say that one needs "a GOOD education about how to be safe, yes?

I did not say across the board that 95% of people don't need antivirus. I said that 95% of people who are well educated about how to avoid viruses, trojans, and rootkits in the first place, don't need scanners and AVs.

Now, you'll admit, there is a difference in those two concepts, yes? :-)

Yes, they are certainly different.

Although the assumption that you have to do "something bad" to get "something bad" - no longer applies today. Also "AntiVirus" is no longer just about viruses.

Computer Security also covers Spyware, Worms, Phishing, Privacy & Identity Fraud, Spam, Security Vulnerabilities in the OS and Applications (and the list goes on).

This only further highlights the need for user education and diligence. Too often users install AntiVirus software and think they are "safe". They don't understand what the alerts mean, the concept of false positives, the difference between signature based and heuristic based detection and their weaknesses.

Admittedly I might be a fair distance from the middle of the bell curve in terms of professional IT security experience - I don't think to obtaining a basic awareness about PC security is too much to expect from users. It is important.

Many users cling to security myths as truths and this isn't a bad thing if they are safer than doing nothing at all - indeed any antivirus protection is better than running with nothing at all - and this includes those free ones (although I won't use them).

I agree 100%! Uneducated users absolutely should use any reputable AV, Scanner, and Security program they can get their hands on!! Companies also fall into that category, because who knows how many uneducated employees they have using their computers.

But, overall, as you have, I believe, agreed upon, the even better solution is education and awareness. That education and awareness brings with it a much reduced need for those types security programs mentioned. That was my entire intent when I voice my opinion that only those with the proper education can, for the most part, ignore the craze for AVs and such.

Now, at this point, I think it prudent for me to make mention of the fact that I haven't even begun to express what I believe is a "proper education". That would be for another thread entirely.... :-)

About Scanners, Security, etc
I don't really care much about popularity, and I believe Gizmo advocates the same, ie Prevention above all, right? So mostly, I already agree and follow that assessment.
It is true we don't have state secrets or visit questionable websites, so that helps. But, voilà, my problem is when visiting perfectly "normal or reputable" sites, that were suddenly infected w malware. Don't know if u remember, just recently this happened on some MySpace pages (Alicia Keys and others), for example.

One moment a site is safe, one goes there often without problems, then Kaboom!!
Then, what do we do? It's the "after" I'm concerned about.

We are security conscious, we have a router(2 in fact: Home office & the bookstore), Kaspersky, Spyware Terminator, we use Spybot(even though it's reputation is down a lot, don't know if it's still worth it...), CCleaner, Ad-Aware, we don't dwld wheely-neely, have Windows updates installed('almost' always on time, not enough hours on the day...), we only surf w FF and lately added McAfee & LinkScanner(which I find VERY useful, don't know how we did without it before!)

Lately, we've dwlded DefenseWall Hips (from GOTD) onto the main PC, but have not yet started using it. We thought it could be a good idea to try, since Gizmo been talking about Sandboxing as his new approach to security {Newsletter Editorial #141-143-144}.

So I thought good scanner(s) could be useful & reassuring. I was talking about online scanners, that we could use from time to time, to pick under the hood.
Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed, either adding to or change the current security set-up we're using.

Thoughts - FwF, you've a slight tendency to skim and overgeneralize, dontcha? I really didn't "swear by xcleaner", only tossed it into the ring because of the Dell tech's rec and what it did. Unlike the ripoff scanners that pretend to find things but won't tell ya til you fork over cash, any scanner I mention will simply do its job to the best of its abilities and keep the nagging to a minimum. There has been is no nagging (as of yet) with xcleaner. As for scribblink and other juicy finds I've made, sometimes one just needs to poke around a bit to locate the cool stuff.

"95% of private individuals with a proper education don't need scanners". I hope you didn't publish your Factoid on Educated Computer Users as an Op Ed. Methinks it's in need of editing - According to Elmo Fuddnicker, professor emeritus, Humanity's Flaws 101, 99% of computer users, including:
kids,
parents with kids,
employees who secretly bring flash cards home from work,
yuppies who entertain or hire illegal alien maids,
newlyweds ISO "spice",
lonely people ISO "spice",
the elderly ISO miracles,
computerphobes,
anyone whose firewall is disconnected even for the 30-seconds it takes sniffers to find open ports,
normally alert people who even once might fall for a well-crafted phishing expedition,
anyone who inadvertantly clicks on a link that diverts them to malacious sites that instantly download crap or to a legit site that's been hacked,
anyone stupid enough to open an email with the teaser subject line "Hi!" or "loCost pHrmacY MeDz",
and those who think they're too smart to fall for phishers and con artists
all lack the "proper education" to surf without scanners. Globally, commonsense is in short supply.
BTW, the other 1% are off-line having their computers reformatted.

Guilty as charged. I'll turn in all my personal effects at the front desk, and head on down to the dungeon. I hope you didn't publish your Factoid. Nope, I rarely even voice my opinion about it to others, because I have learned in the past that most people will come right back at me and tell me that I'm bonkers. It's always the same... if one does not voice the same opinion as the majority, then they are open targets. That applies to anything in life, yes?

@ LK I said in my comment that there will be many opinions that are different from mine, most people in fact disagree with me. There are many, many people who are absolutely convinced that one cannot and should not operate a computer without antivirus, security, and other failsafe programs running to protect them. I just shrug my shoulders, and smile. We all have different realities in life, we all perceive things by way of our own experiences. But mostly it comes down to this: People want to feel secure. If they spend money and run programs that are touted as providing that security, then people will be at ease. I mean, you never hear of a large company getting hacked, do you? You never hear of a major website having a security breach, do you? You do?? Oh, well, maybe their software just didn't cost enough, eh?

Yes, I'm being snide to express a point... No matter what, the best defense, is proper education and proper safeguards, period. But, my opinion is just the way BuBBy expressed it, the lone opinion echoing down a deserted street...

So, just get the best, most expensive security software you can afford, and you'll have a measure of peace and security. OK? OK!

Look at it in the big picture sense. It will do you no harm to run all those programs, just cost you some money. And you may gain a sense of security. Until, the first time you are let down by those programs. Then you'll ask yourself why did it happened? Why did you spend all that money, and still get infected or compromised? Then someone else will just look at you, shrug their shoulders, and smile..... Maybe say to you, "Well, you should have been using Program XX all along. You just used the wrong program!" :-)

There, there, LeKanaw, don't cry, don't scream, don't kill yerself! Everything's gonna be okay. (well, it's really not, it's just gonna get worse, but someone told me to practice my e-consoling skills... so, how'd I do?)

If you have some computer proficiency, you might want to try installing Sandboxie on one computer at a time to get the hang of it. http://www.sandboxie.com/
GAOTD recently offered something similar, I don't recall how it fared in ratings/reviews.

Hope you take my advice and install that free alternative to Acronis, if only as a stop gap measure.

I don't mean to be dense, I just play dense on TV. What do you mean by "tout", kemosabe? That's normally used if someone's selling something.
