Swan, it could be just me, but you seem to complain a lot......

first, yes, I do agree that moderators sometimes don't censor what they are supposed to
second, I don't think that Buddy and Lee get paid to do this, they don't have all the time in the world to read every single post

2. closing of topics
First, yes, Bubby, you do seem to close a lot of topics. sometimes it seems like it is because you can't "agrue" the point other people make.Also, you seem to close topics "unfairly"

type in backup in search, I'm not the only one, but I get closed topic within 60 min
Second, I guess that it is (and I hope) that it was because you just saw mine by luck and don't "favor" anyone
Third, I really think that closing topics for "no reason" is very annoying, but there is no need to get "extreme" about it Swan

overall
I think that Bubby can "get on people neves" a lot of times
but
he/she (don't know sorry) has done a LOT MORE good
remember that no one is perfect
next time you feel mad/annoyed,
put yourself in his/her position
you are not being paid, you are trying to help people, you can't read every topic, yet people get extreme because you made a few mistakes....
I think that "we" (everyone, Bubby, Swan, me (or is it I?:)
I'm sure that we can all improve+ learn
hope I have not offended everyone/anyone.....

I looked at both those threads you referenced and I don't think your correct about BuBBy at all. BuBBy makes good points and is IMHO THE most helpful and generally well spoken moderator on this site.

In essence, there's really nothing here that relates to censorship other than previous postings listed for reference to the conversation. That thread was taken over via complaining and got off topic. It looked to me as though it could've gotten ugly, and I think BuBBy made the right choice. If the others wanted to continue the discussion they could have started a new thread, and at that (I'm guessing) there were likely already other threads related to the original subject anyway.

2. closing of topics
He was right to close the thread you asked for help in before it got out of control by others posting with the same requests as this is not a topic for discussion and against the GOTD policy period. He could have deleted it all together so not to entice others to start, but rather left it available so others would see the same answer and hopefully not bother with a subject that's a closed chapter anyway, which most understand.

Sorry Mike, but I personally don't think you have much of an argument here. BuBBy and I have had our difference of opinion, but it all comes out in the wash. I'm guessing you've never had the pleasure (or some may say displeasure) of moderating a bunch of attitudes/members. Try doing a moderators job for a week and see if that doesn't change your outlook about some things here. BuBBy and Lee no doubt have their hands full. This is a unique web site with a unique forum. I myself have my complaints. But life's not perfect, and sometimes it can't always be the way we want it. So you don't agree with things! That's why you have the opportunity to voice your opinion, and in this case I just don't see the merit for your post or complaint(s).

First of all, there's no guarantee that any comment we post to any online forum will appear. It's a facility that provided free, and the people who run it are entitled to impose conditions, as they choose.

Secondly, I've always found BuBBy extremely polite and helpful, and conspicuously non-partisan when there are problems with GOTD. Some threads can run on and on, and sometimes closing can be the best option. I notice that BuBBy doesn't delete them, which would seem to me to be censorship. The posts can still be read.

Thirdly, the moderators are unpaid and give their time and effort to help everyone with problems that crop up, so I think we should appreciate that a bit more. I've found these forums a great resource for GOTD issues, and for information about freeware.

Well guys and gals, I just got on the site and this is the first thread I'm reading. I did follow the links you posted kevin. That thread went off topic in a hurry so I can see why. The mods closed it before it got out of hand. The thread swan is still harping on involved me. I can see exactly why no moderator replied to that thread because members had already pointed out her mistakes. There was no action other than editing Swans personal info (since she wouldn't). When a reasonable amount of time went by and she didn't reply, it was closed. Its as simple as that. (of course she did dispute the closing of the thread so she could defend herself but actually there was no defending needed. She made a mistake by posting personal info in a public forum then made a bold statement about what she did supposedly).

As far as the second thread, I have no idea other than a repeat of instructions. Maybe BuBBy was in a no BS mood. I get that way too. Look at it this way Kevin. I could have created that thread and BuBBy would have done the same to me.

Don't get offended dude. I don't believe it was because of you.

I'm pretty sure that Bubby just saw mine by chance, I am pretty sure that did not just pick on me, althought a lot of people have ask the same problem without getting closed

I know two mod, Bubby and Lee, both seem nice so far and Bubby has been very active in helping
I'm not trying to blame anyone, just showing Swan that, yes, Bubby did close your topic, but I'm sure that he/she was not picking on you

I think the two posts were closed for very different, and valid, reasons, neither of which was personal.
Swan's post needs to be seen in all its pre-snipped glory to be believed. I also have to 'fess up to taking part in what was less than a dignified discussion. But Swan is...well...Swan, and that particular thread brought out the smart-aleck in some of us. It was obviously closed because the OP was indefensible, and the responses would have gone from good-natured to downright nasty in short order.
As for your post, Kevin, I'm thinking it was closed because your question has been asked and answered more times than I can count. A day hardly goes by in the comments section (and often here in the forums) without someone wanting to know how they can save a giveaway in the event of re-formats, crashes, etc. The whole idea of the "free-just-for-one-day" downloads is so that people will try software they might otherwise have ignored or never seen and if they like it, buy it when the time comes. (And tell others about it.) This question is invariably followed by a tsunami of responses on whether or not it can/should be done and why or why not. It can get very drawn-out and argumentative. I'm fairly certain the moderator (Bubby, in this case) just wanted to avoid a re-hash of a tired and volatile subject, with no disrespect intended.
Obviously, I can't speak for anyone else or read their minds. You asked for opinions - those are mine.

You made a very good point headman. A person would have to read it to believe it. I was hoping that our posts would sink in but........I read in another post that was placed in a different thread (one that was closed) that another forum was even directed to that very thread! Oh well, we tried. BuBBy or Lee did a good thing by closing it.

1. it was off topic
2. it could of went another "direction" making things worst
also
that was my first post on my first day on this site, so I did not understand the rules yet, don't blame Bubby for closing it

What's the point in digging this up after it's been more than a week (even two months)?? If you have a problem with a moderator decision, you should try PMing the moderator or (heaven forbid) one of the higher-ups.

I hope I didn't sound like I was knocking you for that post, Kevin. I apologize if that's the way it sounded. After clicking your profile, I saw you were new here at the time and was going to mention it, but my reply was getting long-winded as it was. You had a perfectly reasonable question. It's the people who who get a reasonable answer but can't let go that get under the skin. You've seen them: the ones who, no matter how many times it's explained to them that "feedback" involves negative as well as positive remarks, will say (usually with the Caps Lock key pressed firmly down), "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything".
I took a quick look around at topics that have been closed, and when I look at it objectively, I realize you couldn't PAY me to be a moderator here, much less do it voluntarily. I lack the self-discipline to listen to a tirade against cartoon nipples on playing cards without giving someone a digital slap upside the head. I'd be the first moderator to have his IP address banned.
Bubby and Lee have no control over the comments section, so this is straying off-topic, but if you want a chuckle, check out the archives. Go back three or four months before they started cracking down. Look for giveaways with 150+ responses, those are the best. Some of the drama, in retrospect, is hilarious.

Actually - I close topics because I feel the matter is closed, and that further discussion will not be productive and possibly a detriment to the normally positive atmosphere in these forums.

In a sense once I see the elephant start rolling down the hill - I can either stop it (show's over everyone... move along nothing to see), or I can stand with everyone else and watch it gather speed (It's a terrible thing to see... but so difficult to not watch). And then worry about how to clean the mess up at the bottom of the hill, afterwards.

But just like everyone else - I love a good "elephant rolling" every now and then.

But just remember - I'm not like a "comment moderator" who gets to decide what you can say - I will give you enough rope - just make sure you use it considerately. If you abuse the privilege, you will have to live with the outcome.

I believe people are generally mature enough to respect each other and recognise that everyone has different experience levels. We all started with computers knowing the same amount - some are just further down the road than others. Try to help others to "catch up" - it's a good feeling.

Actually - if you look again - "Swans' topic" was closed by Lee. If I got to it first, I would've closed it (and possibly deleted it). It had absolutely nothing to do with GOTD and did not belong in the forums. Actually (as I said in a subsequent post) It should've been handled with a polite email to the Site Admins (via the contact form).

It is true that Lee and I cannot possibly read every single user post and test the giveaway downloads and in my case Moderate and Admin the other sites I am involved with, (in Lees case - "to have a life"). If you see something that you believe doesn't belong, or that you find objectional - send me a PM - I will review it as soon as I can.

Furthermore, if elected as your leader, public holidays every Tuesday and Thursday-for Everyone!

I saw where the French work week is 35 hours. What about the UK? Here in the states, if you want to eat and stay out of the rain its about 100.

Oh and not too long ago you were popular if I remember right. Burning at the stake ring a bell? ROTFL

It's just a board. I have no problem with anyone here including Swan, Bubby, and Lee or you. That's how I feel about the matter. Try to not take everything so personal and remember everyone has good and bad days.

I wouldn't think an Aussie would be offended being referenced as a 'dude', ...would you BuBBy?!

I've heard various cultures do consider labels as such insults for whatever reason, and this is why I choose to reference globally as brothers or sisters when replying directly or commenting about indirectly. IMO if that kind of reference is found by someone to be offensive, I can only assume that person chooses not to be recognized as a part of the overall human race, or at the least doesn't want their gender exposed or refereed to for whatever reason.

Even then sometimes you can't win 'em all! ;)

Edit:

Hey there Lee! :) You as an Englishman wouldn't be offended if refereed to as a dude either would you?

BTW - I have to second Michelle's comment.

I prefer to be called 'Lee' or 'Salad'. However I find it racially offensive to be called a 'Pom'.

BTW dude is just a simple term I use for man. No hiden meaning there. If I meant something else,,,,,,,,I'd say it. LOL

The 'pom' reference is a good example (as I found out talking to Lee) of the difference in interpretation between countries. I believe the term is seen by many here as a friendly or affectionate term - the British equivalent of us being called "Aussies". I've also found the American equivalent term of "Yank" or "Yankee" is found offensive by some. Perhaps the best yardstick, a derogative or racist slur from an Aussie is probably going to be a lot more colorful (yet served with a slice of humour).

I think the safest choice is to call people by their Forum alias. If they want you to use their real name (or an alternative) - they will ask you to do so.

Good point Face. I didn't think about it that deep. In my state, every courthouse was burnt to the ground to destroy all records except for 2! LOL alittle KY history. So being a southerner that would have wore grey, if a Brit called me a Yank still wouldn't bother me because its just slang for American. But even that is a loose statement because we have both North and South Americans. In the north, we have Canada. In the south there are too many to name. So Yank or Yankee is even more descriptive and pinpoints us to a given country. LOL

I guess if I called a neighbor "Yank", then it would apply and the fight would be on. ROTFL
