Icy Tower 5.5Mb
This was first posted in Week 47 Here but deserves a fuller re-posting, with some screenshots/ more info, as it’s turned out (with very good cause!) to be a thoroughly popular game! If you haven’t already played this, get a copy and give it a try and you’ll soon see why it deservedly has such a good reputation! It really is an excellent and fun ‘short-play’ game.
One reason for re-posting is that’s it’s available for the IPhone now at the apps store; as well as for PC and mobile phones. It’s also on Facebook. Compete with your friends in weekly tournaments and try out incredible new towers with the most amazing twists and twirls. You can also play online flash versions at various sites, and there are even online Icy Tower communities.
The game is heavily based on Nintendo’s old classic Ice Climber (released for the NES in 1984). The PC version etc of Icy Tower is by Free Lunch Design (Johan Peitz).
"One day, when Harold had nothing in particular to do, he found a huge tower. The tower was icy cold, incredibly high and totally deserted. "Ey, dis seems like a cool place to hang out in", Harold thought and entered. The tower was indeed empty, but small platforms here and there made it possible for anyone brave enough to ascend to its higher levels. "Ey, I bet a homie like me can do some mighty cool jumps and moves in here", thought Harold, gazing upwards."
And so it started... Help Harold to make the coolest and highest jumps in history! The goal of course is to make a high score and a high combo score, and be accredited with a higher and higher ‘ranking’.
It isn’t overcomplicated, and is very easy to start playing. As you might imagine from the game title, you attempt to climb up a tower with icy and hence slippery stone, wood, and metallic ledges in vibrant colors. But there are some complications. Large gaps between ledges, and especially the gaps by the tower walls can be real killers! If you fall too far back down the tower i.e. off-screen, you die and have to restart. Same if you can’t keep up with the upward scrolling of the tower! You can run, and bounce off the tower walls, and in so doing do tricks (combos) to get extra points. As you get higher up the tower, you run faster and faster. Every 30 seconds, the scrolling speeds up, making the game more difficult with each level, though very high up this stabilises. The tower continues indefinitely upwards as long as you can keep playing, and the more complicated and better tricks you do gain further additional points. Cool acrobat maneuvers increase overall score and double/triple jumps score combo points. The game keeps very full score stats in your player profile and you can watch a replay of your game, or save the replay.
Once you have unlocked floors (every 100 floors), you can choose the floor to restart on. The ledges are generated in a different pattern each time you restart or die. The ledge type/appearance, and at higher levels background change as you progress. You can play the game windowed or full-screen and create an extremely easy or incredibly difficult challenge in a custom game if you wish.
On the downside, gameplay can get repetitive and the music might get a little bit annoying after a while. But if you think the game’s getting boring, just download and replay (or watch on YouTube) how good tricks people playing the game for a long time can get to do!
Icy Tower combines great graphics, catchy cheeky background music and voices and addictive gameplay! Funny screams, flying comments, and several high-pitched whoopees are sure to bring a few chuckles. The background music is a mix of techno pop and beat box that perfectly sets the mood!
