I’m including this one, as EA have just now removed protection allowing it to be played and distributed freely, . . . and because it has just the right balance between being hard, but not quite impossible, always giving the incentive for one more try to complete the mission!
It’s one of a series of ‘top-down’ helicopter games from EA, the other free one for now being Desert Strike - Return to the Gulf; which is very similar, but Desert Strike requires DOSBox to play it (Desert Strike is posted Here). Jungle Strike is also a mix of straight-forward action-blasting, hostage rescuing, and a healthy dose of inspiration from the first Gulf War, being played over sea and the desert, and runs on XP.
Jungle Strike takes place over the jungle and similarly provides an isometric view of the game area. The missions in both Jungle Strike and Desert Strike provide multiple objectives so they are good for quite a few hours play.
You get a new password after completing each mission. You will really enjoy the experience of dodging missiles and bullets from your enemies, which includes tanks, artillery, AA guns, helicopters and many more. Jungle Strike is a fun game. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who likes shoot’em up, arcade and action games.
Jungle Strike
The helicopter controls are very straightforward; and there’s easy control of the three onboard weapons. You need to find ammo crates and fuel crates while on the missions and avoid as much enemy fire as you can as armour, ammunition and fuel are all limited. You can also rescue forces missing in action (MIA’s) and capture enemies, to give a bonus when you safely deliver them at a landing zone. In some missions in Jungle Strike, you need to use other vehicles than your helicopter, including a hovercraft, a F117 fighter and a motorbike; which introduces a good bit of variety into the game!
Although it’s from a previous era, the graphics stand up quite well and the music and sound effects are adequate. It’s a great ‘blast from the past’ gaming experience and a lot of fun if you find modern helicopter sims too realistic and too difficult to fly!
