(33.9Mb) This is a direct remake of the Konami msx platform game Knightmare II, aka The Maze of Galious. It is one of the very very best old-school pc Platformers! Briefly, Popolon and Aphrodite have to defeat the evil that is Castle Greek and its environs, and in so doing rescue their future child from the dark powers.
It is a well known game, but I’ve gathered together some resources to help, and some variants! It is also available now in just the one install file.
Mog is an epic action adventure which consists of Castle Greek and 10 Worlds. All told, with the main map and the 10 sub-maps, it’s a by any account a huge game. To access any of the 10 Worlds, you have to find the Great Keys to the World doors found in the Castle. The Key to World 1 is somewhere in the Castle, but for other Keys, you have to negotiate Worlds and defeat the Demon Bosses! It isn’t that straightforward though, as there is a puzzle to solve to get Key 1. Unlike many platform games, it isn’t linear, you can explore or re-explore where you wish once you have obtained any of the World Keys. But go to a World at your peril! Some have to be visited in a particular order if you wish to stay alive! And there is a Demon Boss to defeat in each World. To complete the game all 10 Demon Bosses have to be defeated. Each World has dozens of items and weapons to find. Each area has a large variety of puzzles and traps (many of them quite fiendish), many monsters to overcome, and … you need to solve the puzzles in each area before you can tackle each Demon Boss.
Mog has some adventure and RPG qualities. You control one of two characters Popolon and Aphrodite, each with different powers, and you can freely switch between them. If one is killed, there is a place to resurrect the ‘dead’ character in the Castle. If both are killed, it’s game over! Popolon for instance is a better jumper and Aphrodite can swim and carry more weapons.
Both characters start with a low Vitality. Discovering a Great Key will increase the Vitality of the character who picks it up or who obtains it in a Boss fight. You can increase both of your characters Vitality either by killings monsters or by touching a fairy who ‘appears’ at certain places in the Castle. This brings a simple tactical element to the game - alternating between characters when picking up Great Keys, using a character with low Vitality but high experience while in a room with easy monsters, etc.
The puzzle element of the game is high, given the vast number of rooms to explore and that any of these may need a puzzle solving for something to ‘happen’ there. With all the monsters to overcome, weapons and items, to collect and traps to avoid, it adds up to a very complete game experience! In fact there isn’t another platform game which compares!
There are game save shrines (points) throughout the Castle. With over 156 screens in the Castle, 174 screens in the 10 worlds, 59 different monsters and the 10 great demons, you can expect lots of fun here. There are 47 different items to collect and you can choose between the two characters as you wish.
The game comes with four different graphics sets that can be switched at will! As it doesn’t come with in-game help you will need to read the manual and items page at least! And maybe print these for reference!
It takes many hours to complete (at least 28 hours+ from scratch, 12 hours+ if you use spoilers!). There is a password save system so you can restart where you left off, or from near to being killed off!
