11 hours into the give away of the Aiseesoft Video Converter: 1489 positive reps and only 123 thumbs down. Aiseesoft is listed on hpHosts as a phishing site and complaints of it being a forum spammer are well known. Now they are rigging the votes.

And the votes for today would be less accurate than any other day, because....
Anybody can vote yes or no and it is anonymous.
I have a theory that some people vote yes because the screenshot looks nice, or because the download is less than 20MB, or because they meant to vote no, but the cat jumped on the mouse...
Just because something gets 2000 yes votes, doesn't necessarily mean the software is any good.
You should try to predict next weeks winning lotto numbers instead. Todays software votes aren't going to change anyones life.

So is it your theory that some 1,400 people voted the video converter was good because of the screenshot? Or would it be more accurate to say the voting was rigged, probably by Aiseesoft, to make the software appear better than it actually is? For a while I checked the vote count about every 10 minutes and the increase in "thumbs up" votes would be in increments of exactly 20. Pure coincidence, I'm sure.
Personally I think it was a more serious issue that your GAOTD comment editors would not allow it to be mentioned that Aiseesoft is listed as a phishing site on hpHosts. That creates a security concern. And it's not the first time security issues about a product/company have been censored.

For today's August 2010 Aiseesoft giveaway-- 1669 positives makes no sense. I'm sure starting not to trust GOTD myself, wondering why this software receives so many positive ratings when I don't think I've really seen that many votes before, especially with so few comments received. And I'm not sure why an administrator would defend something that is so obviously strange. I thought maybe the GOTD site was malfunctioning with the votes seeming so skewed, so when I check out the forums I find this. I don't find any questioning of today's Aug 20 2010 Aiseesoft giveaway votes in the forums here, though when I search 'Aiseesoft' in the forums, a link comes up with a post dated for today's Aiseesoft but when I click on the link, it gives a 404 not found.

I'll bet that when you did the search, the link you are talking about happens to be under the "relevant posts" subheading. If so, I think that's just an error in their search coding.
I wouldn't go so far as to saying that I don't trust GOTD...however I definitely don't trust Aiseesoft. Furthermore, I'll go out on that limb and say I don't believe Aiseesoft's bloated positives score to be just a coincidence. The first time maybe, but definitely not twice.
That being said, one must keep in mind that going by the positives and negatives really isn't a good way to decide if you like or would use the software. It's been discussed many times in the past and I think we're all in agreement that the whole system is pointless. It's too easy to manipulate and it's also too easy just to say "eh, I don't want this," and give it a negative. The best advice I can give someone who is troubled by those votes is to ignore them (they're useless anyway) and read up online and all the comments first. Do some homework to decide if it's for you or not.
With all that out of the way, I will go out on that limb again and say that I'm losing faith in the "GOTD system." There have been too many bad software and developers lately that never should have been given a chance regardless of how much you need the money. As a business plan it doesn't make sense. They'll ultimately end up losing money if they continue to allow companies like aiseesoft to give their products away. We the "consumer" will get tired of the shady companies eventually and move on. I really do hope that GOTD sees the light soon and decides to choose the long run instead of the short run.
