Enhanced Doom Game Engine / E.D.G.E. (3 Mb+)

Description:
"The EDGE project aims to develop a DOOM-style gaming engine that allows for conversions but which will also play the original DOOM game."

You will need a copy of a compatible WAD file for E.D.G.E. to work at all. The game played well on Windows 7. The soundtrack was not audible — but on the up-side, there was no need for DOSBOX, either. To launch the game, I typed the following command into Windows' RUN dialog box and pressed ENTER:
C:\Edge-1.34\edge134.exe -iwad doom1.wad

You can also specify a different WAD file, like so:
C:\Edge-1.34\edge134.exe -iwad freedm.wad

Thanks Idunno; you'll fimd a couple more Doom related games in the synopsis. We should reference them all together sometime. (I'll sort it when I get back from my vacation - well sometime when I get the time. I want to finish updating the synopsis first. Nearly there now. just a few pages to go). :)

I might give that a try, though I gave up on doom and doom 2 once I managed to get into online deathmatch. If you want. Just like the gigabytes of Quake II maps and mods.

I can dig through and see how many custom maps I have still retrievable, though some of them are large enough to cripple pretty fast computers of the day.

I'm in the process of rescuing all I can from my CD-R's, since they are succumbing to bit-rot at a distressing rate.

DVD-R's are much more durable, and hold a *lot* more. And are very close to the same price. and as a bonus, write and read data much faster.

(Here in the Oregon, USA, the sales tend to run to 100 CD-R's for $25 and 100 DVD-R's for $30... no sales tax, either.)

ZDoom (2 Mb+)

Description:
"ZDoom is an enhanced port of the DOOM source code and is designed to run (natively) in Windows."

The game runs smoothly on Windows 7. It is extremely light on system resources and preserves the familiar 'look & feel' of the original DOOM game; but the program requires a compatible DOOM WAD file to function.

Skulltag (27 Mb+)

Description:
"Skulltag is a port of the original Doom II engine that maintains the essential elements of DOOM's gameplay but also adds new features to modernize it."

I loaded the Freedoom.wad data file in Skulltag and was able to play the game in Windows 7.

JDoom (25 Mb)

Description:
"This package for MS Windows contains a version of the Doom game — complemented with customizable controls, revamped menus and some updated graphics."

You launch the game by clicking on its Desktop icon. Before the game begins, you can specify several settings, chosen from a standard Windows Dialog Box.
