I'm not finished adding to this post. I've been working on it for several days. Testing each game and then looking for resources to add to the post so as to give you more options to help you decide whether the game is worth the effort. (sorry Bigun, I've not had time to add controls, but most are keyboard with some using a combination of both keyboard and mouse. New York warriors uses a joystick) If you're on an unlimited broadband connection like I am it shouldn't matter whether you download them first then check later, but I know some of you are on capped broadband which means you don't want to be wasting your band width, or if you're still on dial- up, which I know, there are still a lot of you out there, you don’t want to be wasting valuable time downloading a game only to find its not what you thought it was.
Unfortunately with some of the DOS games I’ve posted like the first one below (7 Cities), my screen capture software wouldn't take any image's. Every time I tried I'd get a white screen, so some of the games are missing any form of image or video. (I've not reinstalled my copy of Camtasia since my last format so can't create any videos at the moment (can't find the darned files, lol).
Most of the descriptions have been copied from the sources
; I haven't had the time to write my own thoughts apart from a few lines here and there. I've not had time to reference much of the material, but generally, the download link is the reference also (though not always). There are more images to be uploaded and some still to take, but I'll add these when I have the time. the whole post is a bit of a mess at the moment. I usually cobble together the post initially, and then proceed to tidy it up and add the aesthetics later. Hardly any of that has been done; what you are seeing is my first draft.
If I wanted to get it to my usual standard, you're talking at least a full day’s work, which I don't have right now, so it'll have to stand as it is for now. At least Most of the games and download links are there. :) (I’ve got a few more games to add, but I need to test them first).
Most of the DOS games work in XP. I've only just reinstalled a copy of Vista after over 2 years, but am still installing all the usual stuff before I can start to test games on it. Hopefully those of you with Win 7 will find games that work, but I'm sure some of you are going to find they don't work. the X-Com game does require DOSBox to work. Well worth the effort if you like the first one. Both games are very similar except Terror from the Deep is based mainly underwater and the difficuly levels are much harder. You can get mods to add to the game, but I've not referenced these yet. (The first one was posted several months ago, which I've linked to so if you're interested in the one in today's post and didn't see the first one I posted (X-Com: UFO Defense), you can find it easily

7 Cities: (~1Mb)
Once, in a tavern on the waterfront, an old salt whispered to you the tale of the Seven Bishops -- Christian men who had been blown far off course into an unknown realm and who established seven Kingdoms whose splendor ranked with the reign of Solomon. Since that time you have dreamed of little else.
Now at long last you have been granted the resources necessary to mount an expedition. To be sure, the Court's ministers are interested only in surpassing Portugal's maritime strength and controlling commerce to and from the Orient. They do not know of your real motives. But no matter. The expedition is yours to command, and you feel certain that adventure beyond all imagining, and riches beyond all dreams of avarice, are in your grasp.

Baroll (1.29Mb)
The aim of Baroll is to get some barrels from one point to another. You do this by repositioning the tracks along which the barrels roll. If there is a break in the track the barrel breaks, or if too many barrels break you lose. It’s a simple concept but Baroll is very well made and is very challenging.
It’s a quick thinking puzzle games with loads of levels and scenes. Baroll is well worth the download.

Bontango: (23Mb)
There is not one single person on the face of the planet that does not like to play with blocks. Its one of the fundamental ways we learn. You pick up a block and you instantly have a grasp of sight, weight and texture - then you throw or drop it and you've got an insight into physics. Then begins building.
In the most base level of enjoyment, the creators of Bontago (or, more correctly, Bontãgo) have created a competitive and gorgeous game around that slight concept of blocks. The idea is to create a tower. The higher you go, the larger area you command. In this radiating disc around your tower, you can begin another tower, grow that one huge and expand further your reach.
While you're doing this, another block using tower builder will be across the disc doing the same. If he or she creates a structure, or series of structures, large enough to encompass all flags on the board at once... well... lets just say you should do that first. To aide (or hinder) you in this quest for more expanse, there will be the occasional "extra" piece, such as a volcano, rocket or earthquake. Such is life when the entire playing field tilts, sending blocks flying off the edge.
Needless to say this is an incredibly versatile game. Most of what I've said so far is customisable and the opponent you're against can either be robotic, or real via LAN or Internet. Its an incredible experience.

Empipe:
A simple looking connect the pipes game, though it’s a lot harder than the deceptively simple looking game that the image below implies. You have to connect the available pipes from the Start to the Finish before the water starts to flow. Simple concept, hard game to master. :)

FloboPuyo (3.73Mb)
In FloboPuyo you play against either a human or A.I. opponent. The object is simple; you have to align 4 or more blobs of the same colour together in order to make them disappear. The winner is the player that can keep their screen clear, without letting the blobs reach the top of the screen.
So thats how you play. Sound too easy? Well FloboPuyo comes with three difficulty settings, so it's simple to find the level that will suit your playing ability.
The graphics are good, the blobs are all 3D rendered and as a nice effect they have blinking eyes! Gasp!
I found the background music a little creepy, but then that's just me. The sound effects that go with you getting rid of blobs are quite satisfying.
The gameplay is relatively simple, yet it is deceptively addictive, I would especially recommend this game to any Tetris fan.
The game is about creating chains of four or more blobs of the same color, until you or your enemy can't do it anymore. It sounds simple, but It's highly addictive and somewhat deep since everytime you create two or more chains at once (a combo), your enemy gets useless gray blobs that block a potential chain.

God of Thunder: (1Mb)
This is a great little collect the gems and avoid the monsters style of game. The sounds still work even without using DOSBox.
The year is 927 A.D. (as mortals reckon time) and the Almighty ODIN has summoned you, his faithful and heroic son, to The Great Hall of Asgard. Armed with only your enchanted hammer and considerable wits, you must journey to Midgard and destroy Jormangund!
God of Thunder was written by Ron Davis in 1993. It was never given much of a chance in the shareware market due to lack of funding, so this great game remains very rare. God of Thunder's unique combination of strategy and arcade action on the PC make it a classic favorite.
reference accessed on the 16th Dec9 HERE
God of Thunder (abbreviated GoT) is a 2D platform/top-down freeware puzzle game created by Ron Davis and published by Software Creations in 1993. It was previously a shareware product but was released as freeware in 2002 or earlier. The game chronicles the quest of Thor, son of Odin and god of thunder as he tries to reclaim Midgard for his father. Midgard, the beloved land of Odin's, was stolen from the god during his "Odinsleep" by Loki, the god of mischief, with the help of Jormangund the serpent and Nognir, the Prince of the Underworld. To help in his quest, Thor is given the mythical hammer Mjolnir by Odin.As Thor progresses, he must solve puzzles set before him by Jormangund, Nognir and finally Loki. He also has to fight his way through the countryside, past city guards, and into the lairs of the gods. Along with puzzles and action, role-playing elements are included. Thor slowly gains more powers as he progresses and his hammer and armor are upgraded when the player defeats one of the three bosses. Through the entire game, Odin watches over him and Thor will find himself admonished by the king of the gods if Mjolnir fells an innocent person.
The game features tongue-in-cheek humor, which becomes more apparent as the episodes are played. A bridge repairman parodies Star Trek when he responds to a request for a dental bridge with "Dammit, Thor! I'm a bridge and TV repairman, not a dentist!" Other examples of humor include countless references to sliding and non-stick surfaces in the second chapter, Non-Stick Nognir. The joke comes from Nognir's use of all of the male citizens in his area as slaves to mine Teflor, a parody of teflon. Stores also feature catchy slogans, such as "Andy's Armor Repair. You scuff 'em, We buff 'em." Probably the most blunt is a blatantly anachronistic use of a jig-saw in the 3rd episode. The game also features several references to the Marvel Comics book character Thor. These include the idea of the Odinsleep, Loki's costume and a mention at the end that Thor should have his own comic book.

Go
Go is a game of strategy. Two players compete in acquiring territory by placing markers on a smooth wooden board with a simple grid drawn on it, usually 19 by 19 lines. Each player seeks to enclose territory with his markers (called ‘stones’), much like partitioning a field with sections of fencing. Further, each player may capture his opponent’s markers. The object of the game is to enclose the most territory, a simple goal the leads to the elegant and fascinating complexities of go.
Points
A full size go board grid has 19 lines each way, forming a total of 361 points where the grid lines touch one another.
Points win games.
Let's become familiar with counting points on the go board.
Liberties
Each point on the board has lines extending from it. The very next point along a line is an adjacent point. Points are adjacent only along the lines. Any point along a diagonal is not adjacent. Each empty point adjacent to a stone is a liberty.
Forming Connections
Once a stone is placed on a point it is never moved to another point. When a stone of the same color is placed on an adjacent point the two stones are connected. Once connected, stones form an inseparable unit. Thus a single stone, or any number of connected stones, make up a unit.
Capture:
Placing stones so as to occupy ALL the liberties of an opposing unit results in NO liberties for that unit and the stones in that unit are captured.
All stones of a captured unit are removed from the board immediately and are retained by the captor as prisoners.
Life & Death:
In this Chapter we will now examine ‘safe’ enclosures, and some that are not safe.
In go the players always seek to encircle territory. Often both will be after the same territory at the same time. Sooner or later opposing stones meet and begin to push against each other. Liberties appear and disappear with each play. The conscientious player keeps constant track of the liberties in each unit involved in these territorial battles.
Since stones are captured only when opposing stones occupy all of their liberties, then it follows that: stones cannot be captured if enemy stones cannot occupy all of their liberties. Groups of stones can have ‘safe liberties’, liberties which cannot be filled by the opponent. Such liberties are always surrounded by friendly stones. Hence they must lie inside an ‘enclosure’.
Escape:
Stones that retain one or more liberties but have no hope ultimately of keeping any liberties are said to be dead as they stand or simply ‘dead’.
Stones that are ‘dead as they stand’ remain on the board as long as they retain even one liberty (until the game is finished, when they will be removed as prisoners).
Two Eyes:
An empty point fully enclosed by one color is called an eye. A group of points fully enclosed by one color is also an eye. Stones live by shaping an enclosure of two eyes.
Stones that can form only one eye, or none at all, will eventually come into atari and die. A stone formation which has two separate eyes will always have at least two liberties. Thus it can not be captured. The opponent can not fill both eyes at once.
Ending / Scoring:
There are four goals in Go: (1) Surround territory, (2) Reduce your opponent's territory, (3) Capture enemy stones, (4) Protect your own stones. The winner, on balance, is always the player who has accomplished these goals more efficiently.
Tying Up the Loose Ends
The game is ended by a pass of turn by each player in sequence. Saying ‘I pass’ means that you see no way to further any of the above goals. Passing presumes that all claimed territories are completely surrounded (all fence sections are in place), and no stones are in atari along the borders between opposing live groups.
Scoring
First verify that all dame have been filled, (with extra stones, not prisoners). Remove from the board, as prisoners, all stones which are dead as they stand. Count each vacant point for the side that has surrounded it. Subtract from black's point count the black prisoners held by white. Do the same for white.
Whichever side has more net points, wins the game.
The Rule of Ko
The word ko means eternity. In go, ko refers to a common situation that would cause ‘stalemate’, an endless series of meaningless plays if there were no rule to cover this occurrence. As things stand here white's three stones at the top are cut off from the others. They appear to be dead as they stand, but - - -. It is white's turn and the black stone which is separating the upper white unit from the lower white stones, is in atari. This ko situation is of great importance to both sides.

Hoyle Classic Board Games: (<1Mb)
There's a reason why people have been playing chess, checkers, and backgammon from time immemorial - they're fun. And in essence, Sierra's success with Hoyle Classic Board Games depended on translating favorite games to the computer as exactly and as completely as possible - leaving the time-honored gameplay well enough alone and adding just a few little computer-aided perks. Happily, Sierra has done just that.
Checkers, Snakes & Ladders, Yacht (Dice Rolling), Backgammon, Pachisi (ludo)and Dominoes are collectively the names of the game. They're all true to their board game counterparts, but each has a little computer enhancement - your dancing animated piece in Snakes & Ladders, for example.

Jigetiser Xmas Gifts
A Jigetiser jigsaw puzzle is very simple to use. It can be played with the mouse. You drag and drop with the left and can rotate the pieces with the right mouse key. A sizable preview window helps to get the pieces together. Menu and dialogs offer texts in English.
To give beginners a chance to solve a puzzle and not to bore advanced people, we've defined five different levels:
Beginner - Very simple, standard shape, ca. 24 pieces, preview
Intermediate - 50% deformed shape, ca. 54 pieces, preview
Expert - 100% deformed shape, ca. 104 pieces, preview
Guru - 100% deformed shape, random rotation, ca. 160 pieces, preview
Maniac - 100% deformed shape, random rotation, ca. 216 pieces, no preview
The first two levels are qualified for preschoolers.
You can find loads of different Jigsaws over on the developers site HERE, but all I’m going to mention here are the Christnas themed one. You’ll find our Christmas themed jigsaws on THIS page plus several more Xmas related jigsaws over on the Caiman Islands site which I’ll link to individually below:

Kiki The Nanobot (2.6Mb)
Kiki the Nano Bot is probably one of the best and most creative 3d puzzle games I have ever played. The storyline is a little bit hard to describe. You control a small robot named Kiki and your ultimate mission is to help repair your maker, whose master control program has been destroyed by a parasitic capacity. Each level consists of a 3 dimensional cube. The aim of each level is to get to the exit by rolling along the walls, jumping on the platforms and moving various objects around.
At first the controls are quite disconcerting and frustrating, but if you practice during the first level, they become a lot easier. You can literally roll anywhere on the cube walls and if there is a platform within jumping distance, you will be able to latch on to it, with the 'camera' following close behind.
It may also take you a while to figure out exactly what to do - the game has a fairly steep learning curve. Fortunately it does offer you some help - if you press ESC while playing and go to HELP you will be told the process which you will need to follow to complete the level. Even with this help the game remains extremely challenging and unless you are an experienced puzzle game player, it won't take many levels to become rather difficult.
The sound effects are excellent and the graphics are good. Both surpass any expectations I might have had. This would have been a pretty decent game even if the graphics had only been half as good as they are and the sound had been absent, purely because the game is such a joy to play.
This game is pretty as close to perfect as a game gets – unless you aren’t a puzzle game fan. Highly recommended.

Downloading from both sites I found that there was a discrepancy of over 1Mb in the download size. Thje smallest file contains an installer which gives you the option of installing wherever you wish and also creates a desktop shortcut and a start menu programs shortcut. When you start the game it starts in a window, but you can change this via the options menu. The larger file from Tucows unpacks to a folder on the desktop. You will have to manually place the file wherever you usually put your games then create a shprtcut. To play the game you have to use the DOS Batch file rather than the usual icon. Maxwells Maniac
The following game is basically a Jezzball clone. Whats not to like about such a simple concept. With the amazing technological advances of today with respect to computer video games, the almost life like immersion of titles like the Call of Duty Franchise (Have you seen the amazing graphics of the latest one? One minute you’re fighting a battle with insurgents across the cracked and dry bed of a large river, then you’re zooming through the streets of a middle eastern town, with blocks of flats blowing up; suddenly you’re into close quarter combat that’s so immersive you could swear there’s bullets whizzing over your head (assuming you have the surround sound turned up to a suitable volume), then you suddenly find yourself climbing an ice face with ice picks in hand, even the ice cracks and makes that creaking sound when you hang their momentarily. then, after a mission in a ice and snow filled enemy base your off down the mountain on astolen snow mobile….what an wmazinggame – pity its not an open world game. anyway, brilliant game and one htat grabs your imagination – then you check out Maxwells Maniac; simple graphics and a simple concept. No next generation graphics here. I’ve always thought I don’t like Jezzball, yet when I’ve been in a position where I#ve got to test such a game for projects such as this one, I find the time slipping by without realizing it. Yes a very simple game, but you’ll get some fun fro it Justas you would with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Not only that, this is probably one of the smallest games I’ve ever posted in this project, with the game weighing in at only 96Kb, yes only one tenth of a megabyte. You could store 14 copies of this game on a floppy disc, lol
Anyway, here’s the even more unrelated introduction to this game from abandoneer:
According to the second law of thermodynamics, the fate of the universe is to unwind (over a great period of time) like an old spring-loaded clock as high energy flows only toward low, and as order irreversibly gives way to disorder in a process called entropy.Back in the 1870s, the British scientist James Clerk Maxwell caused an uproar when he unleashed "Maxwell's Demon." Maxwell's Demon was a theoretical being capable of opening and closing a gate between two chambers of unbalanced molecules. Through such precision control of molecules, Maxwell's Demon would be able to reverse entropy and, among other things, create wonderful perpetual motion machines. But could such a demon work?
For nearly a century, scientists argued about whether Maxwell's Demon could really defeat entropy. Finally, Maxwell's Demon was undone by the argument of French physicist, Leon Brillouin, in the 1950s. The argument? Simply that Maxwell's Demon would have to work too hard. Maxwell's Demon was put to rest.
But wait! He's back! Only he's not a demon anymore. Now he's a maniac! And he's trying harder than ever to keep those molecules flowing in the right direction. Won't you please help?
The above text came from the help files of Maxwell's maniac. This could be called a sequel to the extremely addictive Jezzball, although in fact I don't know which came first. The point is that both games use the same engine, and are addictive in the same way: you have to deal with the same bouncing balls that can be insanely repetitive but exciting. As it is a very simple game, it can be fun for only a few hours at best, but rest asured that whenever you open it again you'll fatally lose half an hour or more on it. You just won't turn it off, no matter what else you were doing.
The Game:
The object of Maxwell's Maniac is to separate the red molecules from the blue molecules inside that famous divided Maxwell chamber, using the slidergate. At higher game levels you use the right mouse button to place lead bricks to help channel the molecules where you want them. Place the bricks carefully, as you don't get many.
There are three separate games within Maxwell's Maniac, each with multiple levels. You can play each at slow or fast speed.
Move is the easiest game. The object is to move the red molecules from the blue side of the chamber to the red side. With each new level it gets tougher to keep track of which molecules are passing through the slidergate.
Swap begins with the red molecules on the blue side and the blue molecules on the red side of the chamber. Use the slidergate to swap the molecules over to their proper side.
Paint is a variation of Swap, except when a molecule passes through to the correct side of the chamber it loses its color and becomes gray. The object is to paint all the molecules gray. You've got to be quick, though, because a painted molecule, escaping back through the slidergate, regains its original color.
You can play all three games with the prize ball molecule, by choosing Prize Ball from the Options menu. This gray ball is an unstable molecule that (for a limited time) provides bonus points each time it passes through the slidergate. However once you're out of good time the prize ball molecule degrades into an unstable penalty molecule. If you allow an unstable penalty molecule to pass through the slidergate, it explodes and costs you one of your chambers.
You can also opt for more demanding play in all three games, by choosing Intense Game from the Options menu. Intense Game makes playing Maxwell's Maniac harder, by introducing up to seven molecules at one time into the chamber. But to reward your efforts, it places an 18-screen limit on the game. It takes a lot of intensity to make it through all 18 screens. You can play Intense Game at either slow or fast speed.

New York Warriors
The graphics are very pixillated, but the game is still fun to play. There is no installer so you'll have to copy thye unpacked folder to wherever you want it to go then create a shortcut. You can run the game from the Warrior or the run me file. You'll get a screen that asks you to select a sound option, then a second screen that tells you what options there are for configuring the game. Oh yeah it asks if you want to use a joys stick. If you do you then have to centre the joystick. The following are the configuration controls:
Configuration controls:
s.........Sound on or off toggle
p.........Pause
J.........Joystick
Difficulty settings:
F1........Easy
F2........Intermediate
F3........Difficult
Number of Players
1.........1 Player
2.........2 Player
New York warriors is a typical topdown viewed shooter where you can control one or two heroes who basically have to blast everything in their path to victory. Along the way you'll encounter loads of baddies and end of level bosses but you can pick up a lot of powerfull weaponry to help you in your fight.
The game is set in a post apocalyptic New York and you will progress through various parts of the city each of which is controlled by a gang. These gangs are very colorfull to say the least and some of them are the Ramboids, who bear a striking resemblence to Rambo, the ninjalike assasins, the Ganja, Sammies and so on. You have your basic AK-47 at all times but you can pick up weapons like homing missiles, threeway guns and grenade guns. You will need all the help you can get because there are no friendly people left in the city, even sleeping bums will pick up a gun and start shooting at you.
I've seen plenty of overhead shooters like this and this game doesn't really add anything to the genre at all. That doesn't mean it's very bad or anything just not groundbreaking but I still had fun playing it through to the end. It's very difficult though and without a trainer I doubt you will come close to the end with only three lives. For a quick blast I can highly recommend this simple shooter to cool off some of that agression.
Game Controls:
Left Arrow...........Moves left and fires left
Up Arrow.............Move up and shoot up
Right Arrow..........Move right and shoot right
Space................Fire weapon
You can pick up new weapons throughout each level; for example the first weapon I found enabled me to fire in an arc rather than just in one direction, which made it easier to kill the enemy.

Overload (<1mb)
The game field represents a rectangular in the size 9x6 cells. Players go by turns on the any cells of the field which have been not borrowed with chesspieces of the opponent. On one cell it is possible to put up to 4 chesspieces. When the number of chesspieces in a cell is equal 4 the cell "blows up" - 4 chesspieces share on 4 cells, adjoining closely to the "blown up" cell. If in the given cells chesspieces of the opponent they pass to the player who has made "explosion" contained. If before explosion on any from the given cells was 3 chesspieces after him these cells also will start "to blow up". Won it is considered the one who one of the courses completely will remove from a field of a chesspiece of the opponent. Very original game, I advise to try!

Rampart (<1Mb)
Rampart is a very basic real time strategy game. You have to build forts and then establish guns to protect your land. You are attached by the navy of your opponent whether it be a computer generated opponent or a real person via a LAN. After each wave of Attacks you should repair the damage to your walls otherwise your defences will be weakened and may lead to the opponents invasion force making land.
