   Eventide is a platform game from Cornell University. You have a magic sword that can deflect projectiles that the monsters shoot at you. Using the sword, you can also switch the element of the projectile that you deflect back to defeat enermies and solve puzzles.

   As the knight Gareth, you must shed light upon a web of lies and deceit as you rid your king’s castle of an army of phantoms. Only by combining the powers of fire and ice with your energy-deflecting sword will you discover the truth and restore peace to the land.

   Using only your trusty magical sword you must defeat a castle full of Fire and Ice Demons who will try to destroy you by throwing balls of fire and ice in your direction. Since they are demonic entities you can't defeat them using the conventional tactics. Instead you employ the power of the Elements, which has been captured in the Elemental Power Stones to defeat phantoms, possessed gargoyles, an angry gatekeeper, one huge worm, and Amauro the demon king himself.

   Thanks for the link but could someone please help?

   I've downloaded the game but when I try running it, it displays that it's loading and then, once that's complete, it leaves the whole screen blank, I can't even bring up the task manager to kill it and so have to turn off my machine to reboot. Note: I have XP + SP3.

   And I even tried it under DOSbox just in case (it didn't like that).

   There isn't any info on the webpages about compatability so what am I doing wrong?

   EDIT: The debug log says:

   DirectDraw: Action not supported.
   GameX: Blur speed test FAILED, blurring disabled.

   I haven't had any problems with DirectDraw before (no idea if any other programs use it).

   I'm not sure but you could try updating DirectX or updating your video card drivers.

   The behaviour has now changed both before and after updating DirectX; it still crashes but doesn't lock the machine up (so I can just carry on without rebooting) and the debug log now says:

   DirectDraw: Access to this surface is being refused because the surface memory is gone. The DirectDrawSurface object representing this surface should have Restore called on it.

   Is this familiar to anyone?

   p.s I won't carry on with this for too long because I'll just give it up as a lost cause since nothing else has similar problems.

   Hi Spodo Commodo,

   Yep, that's familiar.
   I've seen this before with GameX (the game engine that was used). Sometimes it seems as if breathing during the launch can cause those games to crash, but mouse movement has my vote.
   Eventide crashed on my first attempt as well and it has produced a fresh debug log on every run since, but if I don't move the mouse at all while the game loads then I can eventually play without problems. It takes a little while to load (especially the first time), but it's worth the wait IMO.

    Nice one rO, thanks for filling in. The internet connection has been rather sporadic since arriving at my hotel in Orlando. I discovered today that the hotels internet security kept blocking me whenever I visited the giveaway site. Thankfully the network administrator has tagged the giveaway site as okay for me, so I shoul be around a little more now. Your selection of free games has been great. Thank you.

    I'm off to swim with the dolphins in the morning. :) (Well for about 10 yards, lol)

    Yea, Wrabbit! Just have them pull you. They're quite good at that. :)
    My wonderful photographer husband filmed my daughter with the dolphins... only to find out that (you guessed it) the battery was quite dead! Lol. Luckily I was taking snaps behind him.

    We're off to Discovery Cove in a little under an hour. I've recharged the video camera's battery and the spare. The stills camera has likewise been charged up. We're going to split the family so that we can take video. You're no longer allowed to take cameras into the dolphin pool; but you can film from the sidelines. The production video isn't that good as it shows everyone that are in the pool at the time rather than being just family specific. (A friend of ours lent us their bought video of the experience and I reckon I can do a lot better)
