Today's free games are a pair of RPG's called RuneSword and RuneSword 2. Both games are great examples of freeware RPG's. That being said, however, RuneSword 2 was initially a commercial game but was later converted to freeware. I believe these to be great additions to the game project. Note that in order to install the patch on RuneSword, you must first install version 1.0.4 and then install the patch. Enjoy!
RuneSword
After an endless development cycle, RuneSword v0.90 Gold Beta was released on February 6th (wizzard's birthday), 2000 at 7:00 PM. Several months later on September 1st, 2000, RuneSword v1.0 was released. After a few patches (and one more available below), we had a pretty stable game packed with fun. Best of all it was absolutely free although we did encourage you to give some money to the charity of your choice. Some features:
• Turn-based, strategic combat
• Easy, pick-from-a-list scripting
• Object-based, enabling cut and paste components anywhere
• Supports all created material across adventures
• Enables creators to create unique races, spells, monsters, magic items
• Allows user-created graphics, music, and sound effects
• Automatic tome and map adventure generator from components
• Over 30 skills to choose fromWhat followed brought our ISP to its knees. We clocked over 100,000 downloads before losing count. Our Message Board was cranking so hot we had to move our web page. Ah, those were the days.

RuneSword 2
The game holds 5 different quests that can be played, like
"The dragon merchant" where you have to capture a dragon with a magic lamp.
"The hunt": hunt or be hunted,
"The wumpus game": hunt 4 magic wumpus creatures,
"The land beyond" and
"The ninth mirror".
Also a new quest can be created. After a quest is selected you'll have to assemble your party. Each character can be chosen from one of the 12 different origins, all having typical characteristics: "Northlanders" being hunters and trackers, "Gauls": thieves and pirates, "Argos": mystical monks, the people of "Zur": fishermen,...
Once a character is selected, you can equip them with special skills like: Axe handling, bow handling, the power to revive, heroism and healing hands. When all characters are created you're ready to start your quest.
You'll find yourselves looking down onto a map, in the center stands your crew. Nearby is a village. In the village different houses can be entered, each house selling and/or buying equipment and magic potions to be used in combat.
In order to complete your quest many lands should be walked and many creatures shall be fought. All fights are turn-based. The number of moves that can be made in each turn differs from the number of characters and the number of action points each character has.
When a battle is won all standing fighters will increase in skill: making you stronger, aim better, heal more,... all to be used in the battles to come.
