It’s been such a lovely day I thought I’d make it even better by posting three games today. The first one is a car orientated game, of which there were loads of links posted last week to similar games when we got streetracer, however this one wasn’t amongst them being a indie developers freeware game as opposed to free commercial games, which is why I decided to post the next two games, both of which are from the same developer:
Highway Pursuit:
The executable installs to C:\Program Files\HighwayPursuit by efault, but can be changed during installation. Aso Start menu and desktop shortcuts are installed though no shortcut to the uninstall feature that can be found within the installed folder. If you wish to place a shortcut from the uninstaller to the start menu programs section within the Highway Peruit folder you can do so by creating a shortcut from the uninstall executable within the games installed folder then copying it to the following address:
C:\Documents and Settings\Whichever account you are using for example Administrator\Start Menu\Programs
Highway Pursuit is a modern game taking its inspiration from a number of classic arcade games. It's an action-packed 3d blast along roads. Highway Pursuit puts you in control of a powerful sports car in a world filled with enemy agents seeking to take control of the road. Your mission is to destroy as many of these enemy agents as possible, without putting any civilian life at risk.
Featuring diverse landscapes and scenery, a variety of enemy vehicles, multiple weapons, weather effects, and also a few helping pointers from your colleague Ashley back at HQ, 3d sound effects, configurable support for keyboard, joysticks and steering wheels, Highway Pursuit is a road trip you shouldn't miss!
Know your enemy:
As you progress into the game, you will encounter a number of vicious enemy agents that will try to drive your car from the road or send you heading straight for the nearest tree. The enemies you will encounter are as follows:
Crasher:
The first type of car you will encounter. These cars are relatively harmless and attack you by ramming you from the side or from behind. They will try to push you off the side of the road.
Blade:
This enemy is a much nastier piece of work. These cars have retractable knives fitted to their wheels. If you are rammed from the side by a Blade vehicle when the knives are fully extended, your tyres will burst causing you to spin out of control off the road. Be very careful of these cars!
Jeep:
The Jeep is bullet-proof, and no amount of attack from your machine guns will get this car out of your way. The only ways to destroy these cars are to push them off the side of the road, or to use oil or smoke in front of them so that they drive off the side of the road.
Chopper:
Hovering above you and able to follow you wherever you go, the Chopper can make quite a nuisance of itself. It will drop bombs in front of you that create huge craters in the road, causing massive damage to any car that should drive over them. The Chopper can only be destroyed using Surface-to-Air Missiles, available from a weapons van, though it will fly away on its own when it runs out of bombs to drop.
Civilian cars:
The roads are also full of innocent members of the public going about their daily lives. Civilian cars come in a variety of models and colours. You should be careful not to shoot these vehicles under any circumstances
Extra weapons:
At regular intervals along the highway you will encounter weapons vans sent by your HQ to upgrade and replenish the facilities of your car. Ashley will warn you when you approach a weapons van, and the appropriate icon will begin to glow at the bottom/left of the screen.
The weapons van will initially be parked at the side of the road. As you pass it, it will pull out into the main highway and accelerate to catch you up. To dock with the weapons van, let it pull ahead of you and then match speed with it. The van will drop its tailgate, allowing you to drive into the back. You must ensure you are aligned as carefully as possible to avoid clipping the side of the van on your way in; it is also very difficult to dock with a van while you are driving around a corner.
Once you have docked with the van it will perform whatever upgrade is appropriate on your car, and will then drop you at the side of the road ready to continue on your way. You can only dock with each van once; after docking is complete, the weapons van icon will no longer glow and further docking with that particular van is not possible.
Also be sure not to let the van get too far away from you before you have docked. If you drive too far ahead of it, the van will not be able to catch up; if it drives too far ahead of you, it will leave you behind.
The different weapons vans you will encounter in the game are as follows:
Delivery van:
This is not actually a weapons van, but is the van that delivers your car at the start of the game and each time you lose a life. If is not possible to dock with this type of van.
Smoke van:
Fits a smoke-screen to your car. When deployed, the smoke screen forms a wide blanket of dense smoke across the road. The smoke does not cause any damage to vehicles that are caught in it, but causes them to drive blindly to the side to get out of the smoke. It can therefore be used to edge cars off the road.
Oil van:
Fits an oil cannister to the back of your car. When deployed, the oil pours out on to the road behind you, causing any cars that drive over it to skid uncontrollably until they crash. This can be very powerful, and also allows you to destroy the armoured Jeep, but be careful not to let civilians get caught in the mess.
Missile van:
Adds a small number of Surface-to-Air missiles to your car. These can be used to try to destroy the helicopter. You should try to fire the missile when the helicopter is as near to directly above you as possible to minimise the chance of the missile missing its target.
Repair van:
You will get a very small health boost from docking with any of the vans, but this van is manned by an engineer who is able to perform more comprehensive repairs to your car, restoring much more of its health. Do be careful docking when on very low health however, so that you don't clip the side on the way in.
Scoring:
Your score slowly increases all the time you are driving, but to really increase your score you will need to take out as many enemy cars as you can. Try not to let any enemy vehicle get away from you: every one has a price on its head.
The points awarded for your actions in the game are as follows:
Destroy an enemy Crasher car: 500 points
Destroy an enemy Blade car: 1,000 points
Destroy an enemy Jeep car: 1,500 points
Destroy a helicopter: 5,000 points
Docking with a weapons van: 500 points
If you destroy a civilian car, all scoring will be suspended for five seconds. During this period, "...no score..." will be displayed at the top of the screen instead of your game score.
You will be given an extra life at 100,000 and 200,000 points.
Specifications:
Highway Pursuit requires a PC running Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP with DirectX 8.1 or later installed.
A DirectX 8 compatible graphics card is also required.
In order to run the game at a decent frame rate, a Pentium3 or equivalent Athlon CPU is recommended.
