Week 27 - Good Games to Grab - FreeCiv (update) and Outpost.

Here’s two strategy games. The first is a clone of Civilization I & II, called but with a lot more nations to choose from, plus the ability to play online if you wish. The second game is another strategy game . Wait until you watch the video I’ve posted. The author of the review uses foul language while pulling the game to pieces. The gist of the review mentions repeatedly that the game is far too complex, and the 120 to 50 page game manual is more than twice the size of your normal sized games manual.

FreeCiv

FreeCiv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the Stone Age to the space age... A number of crashes and other server issues were fixed in the latest release (Nov 2008) so if you have an earlier version it may be worth upgrading. It’s also available for Mac and Linux.

Outpost 2 (179MB)

Colonize a new planet and build your own civilization.
Outpost is similar to the Sim City games, except that it this game takes place in outer space. The objective of the game is simple - colonize an entire new and foreign planet. Deal with problems on both macro and micro level - a very detailed game.

Thanks, Wrabbit... truthfully, not my type of strategy games (too much like work?), but I'm sure some will go right for 'em. Thanks for hunting them down for us. :)

You should watch the video I found for Outpost (if you don't mind the language, which I really thought was unecessary and over the top, but it was the only video I could find for the game, the guy slates the game because of it's complexity. He says it's far too much like hard work to play it; however I think some may actually like the game. It had graphics way ahead of it's time (for the early to mid 90's).

I found another place to download Outpost 2 from though the file size is 11.5meg versus 11.9 versus 1.9meg for Wabbit's link. The second link claims that it will always have most up to date version. The one that Stephen gave says come back another day and it has now been at least 2 days so I'm not holding out much hope. Additionally, I'm impatient and want to try it NOW, NOW, NOW, waaaaah, give it to me NOW (oops, that never worked as a kid either.)

Thanks pavid. I was being lazy. It was getting late, I'd spent far too much time on my new game (Burnout Paradise: Ultimate box) and was exhausted. (The game exhausted me lol) I'll have too get Outpost 2 now. Wait until you see tonights games (for Wednesday. I'm really impressed with one of them. I'd go as far as to say if you like the particular genre I'm going to post, it's brilliant especially as it's over 10 years old. I was going to post it now, but I'm saving it for later tonight (posting around midnight UK time. :)

Well now, that's a really interesting tease. I can't wait.

I would recommend that people look over the second link that I gave. It also has the first Outpost as well as the game music, and cutscene videos (which are both over 100meg) for Outpost 2.

I watched the video and have to make a comment or two, but first; let me stop laughing so hard. I honestly think that I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. Thank you for that if nothing else about these games.

I think I laughed so hard because I remember a friend of mine saving all his money (we mowed several lawns during the summer to earn money) to buy this game as soon as it was released. His family was the one that had the 'new computer' that was amazing. Anywho, I remember a lot of the same comments (minus the language) coming out of our mouths as we played this. It was interesting at the time because the graphics were great, but seriously we kept saying a lot of the same things this guy said. He wouldnt even consider Outpost 2 because of all of this. Though, imho Outpost two was MUCH MUCH better. It was like they hired a new lead guy (sounds like they did) and he tried to fix/finish Outpost. Outpost 2 is still a bit complex, but not half as bad as the first.

LOL! Now you're making me laugh again, ibwebb... that is a gem. Do you think that swayed my opinion? Nah, the titles of these games usually scare me off. But I watched it anyway out of respect for Wrabbit, and thought it even funnier that he chose to use it for his info intro! WTG, Wrabbit... x-D

Darn it, I spent ages sorting out tonights games which featured two games , but it may be that the second in the series is not actually abandonware yet. There are a few download sites giving it away, but I finally stumbled upon the official site and they are only giving demos of the second game which would lead me to beleive it's still a commmercial concern. I'm going to spend some more time researching it and will probably not post Wednesdays games until the morning. I'm really tired and can't put in the time required to complete the post. I have alternatives, but really want to get this sorted first.

Whichever way it turns out, the first game is definitely abandonware and is still a great game. I don't want to say more at this stage though. I just hope I haven't spoiled it for some now. I do have some exellent indie alternatives if it does transpire my suspicions are correct.

Don't worry 'bout it wrabbit... the research you do is much appreciated, and there's bound to be a conflicting opinion now and then. BTW, I think we enjoyed the YouTube intro of it more than the game anyway!
