I thought two alien/monster orientated games would be good for today. The first one is a side scrolling platform game released about 1993 and the second is a Doom/Quake/Hexen clone released in the mid 90’s. Graphics as you would expect are a little dated, but both are still very playable games. Alien Carnage a ‘Halloween Harry’ title plays fine on XP with SP3 though you will require DOSBox for the second game, Chasm: The Rift.

Alien Carnage: (2.45Mb)
Is Halloween Harry the only person left on Earth who can save humanity from being transformed into zombified slaves? Yup. And, as luck would have it, you're Halloween Harry. The invasion is centered in New York City, where a space ship has burrowed its way under a skyscraper. With weapons of mass destruction to back you up, you'll try to blow away each and every alien in order to get to the mother ship and save the planet. Various missions and three levels of play give Alien Carnage high replay value.
Many of the games key aspects can be seen as quite tame by today’s standards – the violence for one. Flaming a zombie who simply turns white when injured then disintegrates isn’t as thrilling as it was fifteen years ago. The game’s simple platforming can also seem primitive at times, also.
There is lots to like about this title, even beyond nostalgia value. For example, in between rescuing beautiful women, spot the mysterious Elvis characters you have to rescue some times. The enemies are often varied – take the blob one which squelches across the ceilings. The weapons are varied and include the standard flame thrower, heat seeking rockets and the almighty Omega. All of which are purchasable via vending machines – which you can afford to use by blowing away enemies who drop loose change (I can’t wait for the future).
Its simple fun, it’s pretty long (spanning four chapters with multiple levels in each) I for one, will continue to return to Harry and his alien shredding ways over and over again. Now that it’s free.

Chasm: The Rift: (17.3Mb)
Despite the weird visuals as you move your mouse around, it's quite a unique gem when you compare it among duke nukem 3d or doom. Well forget those two, this one is great by a long shot, extremely similar to quake, hexen, or heretic, but it's got a smoother look to it, and much more blood that's not for your little brother to see, but it's the thought that counts. The game might seem kind of repetitive near the end, but surprisingly it has great replay value.
The Story
Feeling you are no longer alone, you turn, with just enough time to shoot, killing the mutation charging mercilessly toward you.
You begin to sense an eerie feeling of fear in the air, but your skin crawls as you realize it's your own...What was that thing?
Again and again you shoot, battling more strange beasts; all grotesque mutations of creatures you once knew. Suddenly the inexplicable becomes clear. Time channels have formed in the Earth's atmosphere, turning once normal life forms into something they were never meant to be. As part of a special commando unit, you must not only ward off and eradicate the beasts, but destroy the time channels to finally rid the Earth of these deadly mutations.
