SimAnt
SimAnt explores the detail of the lives of ants, as you take full control of an ant colony. Build up your colony to conquer the other colonies in the yard. Foes include spiders and humans - make their lives a misery by invading their homes. A Quick Game option focuses on battles with other groups of ants, and a full Tutorial mode is provided. Biological detail of real ants is provided, to help make the package more educational.

Hey, this sounds okay. I'm definitely downloading it; but when I get the time to play it.... Hmmm, not sure. Though i'll give it a quick whorl to see if the family actually like it. :) Thank Webmaster.
I was getting a little worried that you weren't posting your Monday slot. you've saved me a game to post for another time. :)

Hi guys, I'm not into the whole Sim thing but my daughter sure is. I don't think she's seen this one so I'm going to download it for her. Does it need the DosBox? Thanks for the find, Webmaster! 2sweet

Sorry, whiterabbit, I was working on Tuesday's game, and almost-he-he (how could I forget?)-forgot.
I did though.
2sweetcamom, I think you need DOS, or DOS-Box, but I actually haven't played this version, I hope it's the DOS version though.

Thanks for this game Webmaster.
My son is Autistic and is incredibly interested in ants. I will point him in the direction of this game as computer gaming is his other great passion!!
Thank you.

If anyone ever stumbles upon a free version of SimEarth for WinXP, I'd be very interested.
Hello, Mem/Mary,
My vocation has me constantly saving links to wildlife and nature graphics. Hope these ANTS are all new to your kid.
ants on a leaf
running in circles
red ant walking
digging a tunnel
walking to and fro
dizzy
dancing
let's boogie
treadmill exercise
Hello thereNo promises that this'll work on your PC, but you might try downloading the free version of 3DCanvas and then downloading this cartoon to see if the blue ant will animate.
Saving the best (IMHO) animation for last - Moebius Ants!

Thanks, thewebmaster
Last time I Googled nothing showed up, so I really appreciate your prompt detective work. Unfortunately, the link wouldn't open for me, yet. No problem w/ my firewall or the IP itself, but Avast doesn't like one of the hops (fr.clickintext.net) so it's just hanging. Google suggests this is an adserver, but Hostsman doesn't have it on the black list so I'll keep fiddling with it after supper.Posted 15 years ago # -
Followup for thewebmaster
D/L the software only to find the same files I have on old floppies, plus a hacker's braggadocian text file.
Ah, well, thanks. SimEarth was an interesting time suck for Win 3.1 and Win95. Always wished someone would take that prog, Atari's Qix, Amiga's Mindwalker, as well as Myst & Riven and standardize/adapt them to a single, up-to-date OS before I was too old to enjoy 'em. (Myst/Riven run, just not well)Posted 15 years ago # -

Hi RunesageMagik,
Thank you so much for the links to the ants. My son loved them and they were all new to him.
I apologise for not replying sooner but I have been ill with some virus and even missed my birthday :(
We will be spending some time on 3dcanvas when I am back to full strength.
Oh, and you were right the Moebius Ants were the ones that caught his attention and fascinated him the most.

Mem,
Until you're up to snuff and ready to tackle 3DCanvas, I'll keep wandering through my byzantine FAVs storage system (more of a rabbit warren than ant hill) to see if there are any more anty-links. These might keep the kid occupied whilst you're on the mend."Build a brownie and they will come." This is a free, interactive and way cool 3D Ant Farm Simulator.
FWIW, ForgeFX has created a number of interesting educational simulators
It's probably best if you're independently wealthy (and can speak Japanese) before you stuff the kid's stocking with this Ant Farm Ipod next Xmas... just don't let him stick it in his ear!
I don't recommend any particular e-commerce site, but recall firing a comment off to one of 'em a couple years ago, noting they'd failed to specify the ant species provided. (if you pay the extra couple bucks required to order them separately) I recv'd a reply with a correct response - harvester ants. You don't want to go on the cheap and round up your average household-infesting sugar ant... too small to eat the gel, too likely to escape through the vents! This one also failed to specify, but I suspect they're all marketing the same Antworks-Habitat.
Here's a forum where kids(?) are discussing the above habitat, and here's a time lapse youtube vid. Whew!
Don't know how old your kid is, so this might not be age-appropriate (I only skimmed the list some time ago and they keep adding to it) - R U an Ant Geek?
I can't recall if any GAOTD member posted an ant farm or ant colony webcam on the Webcam Links thread, but you might want to google for them. Of course, you'd want to screen the site first, just in case the camera is aimed at a fire ant hill and a cow or farmer happens to stumble into it! Might be a bit traumatic for a kid to watch. ouch! ouch! OOOH! omigawd!! ouch! eeeek!
Ever take your kid to the Smithsonian in DC (or, perhaps other museums/zoos if you're not near the US east coast) where they raise large fungus ant farms? You don't want to knock over a table there!

Thanks, but it seems Maxis was strictly profit-oriented and found that too few people had a planet-building god complex... or, too few were educated enough to deal with a complicated interactive game that didn't involve blood, guts and zombies? They apparently abandoned work on the game shortly after I paid my $39.95, with nary an update. sighPosted 15 years ago # -
Mem Hope your kid was old enough to be able to work that AntFarm Simulator.
As for Ant Web Cams - I've found that most web cam set ups fall into 3 categories -
a) more boring than watching paint dry;
b) too blurry/grainy to be helpful; or
c) off-line most of the time. (helps if you think "time zone" because a black screen might just mean it's nighttime, not off-line)With that caveat:
Thai Tree Ants
UK Natural History Museum
AntCam.com ... "with not one but TWO Live camearas!"Veering Off Topic - Here are various other Nature Cams, if you're interested.
This NPS site offers a live video stream of Old Faithful, which could provide a REALLY exciting cam experience if you happen to be watching when the megavolcano blows it's top. Of course, if you live in this region of the US, you won't really need the cam to experience an "Uh Oh" moment.UPDATE: I apologize to thewebmaster for hijacking. Will stop after this. I knew there was a web cam thread here... Jaddis posted lots of Natl. Zoo cam links.
