I’ve decided to post Tuesday's and Wednesday's games today; partly because I am still not feeling 100% so want to take a few days out from sitting at the computer and because Monday’s game seems to have bandwidth problems.
Apparently there are too many community members downloading the main game, so the server keeps shutting down. You will be able to get the game (Babble) from the url I provided, but you may have to wait. Just keep trying. In the meantime here’s another simple but classic game, that’s an excellent time waster:
Volfied:
Today’s game is a simple lines game with a difference because you can also shoot at some of the moving objects within the arena. It was developed by Taito, the same people who made the first ever breakout game. Lines is a game that I’ve never really been interested in over the years, though I do have a couple of games from this genre that my children like. However, this one came highly recommended so I decided to download and check it out and was immediately impressed by it. The game play is much harder than those I’ve played previously, which makes it very challenging; and, well worth a download {in my opinion}, if only to fill in the odd moment, lol; which I think this game will excell at.
This DOS game plays without DOSBox, but if you play it via DOSBox you get sound effects that you don’t get if you play it directly from your windows environment. If you're unsure about DOSBox, check out one of the week 9, or 10 games threads because Wizzard posted an excellent mini tutorial on how to set up DOSBox with Norton Commander so that all you'd need to do thereafter to play any DOS game is to place the game in a specific folder and then use your shortcut for DOSBox, which if you've followed Wizzard’s instructions opens up Norton Commander which allows you to just click on the appropriate executable for whichever game you want to play. Traditionally to play via DOSBox you have to mount the drive and files you're going to use, which is sometimes a hit or miss affair. No longer..... Both DOSBox and Norton Commander are free downloads, the links have been provided by Wizzard.
Configuring DOSBox with Norton Commander:
Follow the link below and find Wizzards post half way down the page. There's also another method by Ornithos which uses simple DOS batch files instead of Norton Commander. either method is valid and as easy to use.

There are old games that are just that - old games, and then there are damn-good-ol'-classic games that remain from your childhood memory. Volfied is definitely the latter one.
You play as a pilot of a ship that has returned to your homeworld - "Volfied". Soon you discover that it's been invaded by aliens. You receive an SOS transmission from the planet, and head on to rescue the people. In order to succeed, you must conquer 80% of the "territory" in each level. The territory is captured by leaving the "protected zone", and then creating a border for your captured territory. You are vulnerable only when leaving your captured territory borders.
Your objective cannot be fulfilled easily since various bosses and their minions will try to stop you. Each level has a different boss, and different minions, which act differently. You cannot take your time and stay protected at your borders forever. Your shields are active only within your territory, but they're limited. When your shields run out, you are vulnerable from attacks even inside your borders, making it nearly impossible to stay alive. However, do not fear! The power-ups are here for your aid! If you conquer a territory with a "block" in it, you will get a power-up. The power-ups are random, and vary from score, speed-boost, weapons, to even minions-clearing power-up!
The challenge Volfied offers is not easily beaten. When you lose all your lives, you have one chance to continue. You cannot save the game, and have to restart every time from the beginning, but it doesn't harm the game. Every time you manage to reach a new level, you feel victorious.
The graphics in Volfied are marvelous for the time. The animations are smooth and the background is detailed, something which wasn't seen often back then. The interface remained from the arcade version, and could've been better.
There is no background music, and the only sound comes from the PC speaker. These sounds can get annoying after a while, and sadly there is no option to turn them off.
Volfied is playable with 2 players, unfourtenly not at the same time. After each completed level, the other player has its turn unless he loses all his lives.
The simple and fast game play, the enjoyable graphics, and the challanging difficulty make Volfied addictive and playable for quite some time. Enjoy! :-)
Note: If you run the game in DosBOX, you can hear some nice soundeffects. There are no speed issues when running in XP however.
