I know there are a few mahjong fanatics amongst us, and I found a site that any mahjong fan should know about. For those that don't cruise over to this site immediately. I saw in awe at all the free mahjong games available for download or in-browser.

I have about 20 commercial versions of Solitaire Mahjong, but after seeing some of the free ones wonder why I bothered buying so many. I've also got Hong Kong Mahjong, which seems to be one of only a few that play the traditional four player game. I think I'll re-install it after seeing todays free games. If ypu've never played 'real Mahjong' then you should check out a demo. I think there's a link via the link Wizzard provides, though it's easily Googled. Thanks for the post. :)
oh well, it only took a second:

Thanks for the link wizard! I enjoy mahjong games - my problem is finding tile sets that are easy enough for my low vision to distinguish the differences. The traditional Chinese tiles are too hard for me to see clearly so I always look for more unique sets. I'm sure I will find at least a couple of versions with tiles that are easy enough for me to enjoy many hours of play!

DNS Big Fish has a mahjong game for you. It is Mahjong Towers Eternity. You can select the type of tiles. One of the options I use, because I am the same as you can't see, is Alphabet letters and even different colors. The tiles are different color within a certain grouping of letters. Much easier to see clearly. This is sometimes a free game at Big Fish.

thanks wizzard!
I had bookmarked this site a long time ago and then promptly forgot about it...lol
The site is AMAZING and it looks like the owner has updated and improved a lot of the information!
Rabbit...I was going to buy the full version of the Hong Kong Mah Jong, but it is about 27$ in Canadian funds so am sticking with the demo,(for now! Santa might come to the rescue..lol)
I started playing MahJong Artifacts again(remember it was offered here a while ago?)
I had forgotten what a wonderful version it is.
So many games, so little time..lol!

If you haven't already found it dns, check out the Tile Sets topic on wizzard's site. It allows you to create your own. Obviously, that would be the ideal solution for you.

Everybody is very welcome. I really couldn't believe how many different mahjong games were offered on that site and I'd never come across it before.

Grumpy1 - I've had Mahjong Towers for almost a year now. Got it with an e-card offer last Christmas. It is a very good version with many layouts. I personally like the musical instruments and the sounds they make!
Merri - I enjoyed MahJong Artifacts as well, but alas it is stuck on the old PC along with a number of other GGOTD games that I've gotten over the ;last 18 months
watcher13 - always looking for other variations so will check that out when I get the chance. Not sure I have the skills to do my own set but will try at some point!
Thanks for the info my friends!

Wow. One of the reasons I love mahjong (as well as playing the game) is my love of tile sets as an art, almost. Am I bookmarking wizzard's link? You betcha. Can't wait to make some of my own, though I already have many favorites, especially in Kyodai, the game that got me started in this pursuit. Thanks, Wizz.

True Mahjong is more funny!

Here's one for you Mahjong maniacs. The UK site of Avanquest software is apparently giving away Mahjongg (sic) Artefacts 2. Don't know anything about the software, myself. The blurb says it has a hundred levels, special powers and powerups like a match3 game, a Quest mode, and an Endless mode.
http://web.avanquest.com/special_offers/2008_calendar/calendar.cfm?country_id=3
Click on the 21 in the sky. You'll have to register, but it will probably be an already enabled download, so "less than accurate" information can be provided. If that doesn't work, you can register again with your real information. The site doesn't track how many times you register/download.
Note: In this Xmas event, Avanquest has offered the occassionally demo in lieu of a full version. So keep your fingers crossed.

This is a pretty decent mahjong, watcher13... suggest those who don't have it do grab it. Haven't heard of Avanquest... another one that has a free game a day? or is it just a holiday thing. Thanks for the post.

Midori, I'm no expert, but Avanquest is a large software distributor with websites doing business in America, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The individual sites can be accessed at the bottom of the link I posted.

I've been running a thread with their Xmas promotions here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4382

Watcher I downloaded the freebie from Avanquest today and I played it a few games and really liked it. I ended the game and it came up that I had 55 minutes left. Did I do something wrong ya think.

No, I'm afraid the news is bad. Avanquest has given away a few other demos in these promotions, pretending (though not saying) it's a real free full version giveaway. They did Jewel Match and Driver Genius that way. Did you give your correct info. in the registration? If you did, check for an email. Maybe there's a license key. If you didn't, you could try re-registering and see if you get an e-mail. It won't mess you up in anyway with these giveaways to re-register. I didn't download. I assume it wasn't part of a zip package that might have a read me in it? Unfortunately, I think it's likely you were given the priviledge of a "free" demo. I may try a download.

Yes "True Mah Jong" is funny, I used to play a couple of times a week with the Chinese clan I worked with...I have a very old original tile set given me by one of the Chef's.
It takes allot of practice to move those walls without them crashing all over the table...they also played it for money and had the upper hand in being able to just feel the tiles and know what they were...kind of like reading braille(for those that have never played with real tiles)!
I am a Mahjong fanatic...they make up 50% of the games I own...and I always hunger for more...my favorite tile set is and always will be the traditional Chinese(without the numbers below or above the Chinese script)! This is a good one: http://www.mahjongsuite.com/index.htm
"MahJong Suite 2008 features a lot of options such as: "Show a legal move" command; Complete Statistics with 3D Graphics; Layout Manager; Customize Tile Sets and Backgrounds; unlimited levels of the undo/redo; ability to save, load and restart games; high-quality on-line help; select a game number; select your favorite games; associate sound effects and much more!"
Here is another: http://www.download-free-games.com/puzzle_game_download/ultimate_mahjongg10.htm
Just two of the many I own!

WR, the one you list(http://www.ninedragons.com/) I've been looking for. I wish GOTD would give that one, it's the true Mahjongg anda great game, the players make comments in chinese.

I fell asleep before I checked my e-mail concerning Mahjongg Artefacts:
"Free Download!
Please note that this game will run free of charge
for 60 minutes before requiring activation."Here's the reply I'm sending to AQ UK:
Thank you for the "free download". I hate those programs you have to pay for before you can download. There's SO many of them, you can hardly find "free" download's anymore. To use American slang, allow me to send you back a free "raspberry". Thank you for a WHOLE 60 free minutes. I couldn't find that ANYWHERE else. Another bait and switch! How trustworthy would anything I buy from Avanquest be?(I'm not really insinuating that stuff bought from Avanquest can't be trusted, but it will give them something to chew on. If they even read it. Though there is a person's name on their e-mail.)
Sorry, Mahjong fans that this didn't turn out to be a real deal.
