Personal download link via e-mail?

The last time I downloaded a GOTD was a few weeks ago on September 4th 2015, First Draft 3.5, and instead of being given the usual option to either open or save, I was informed that I would receive a personal download link via my e-mail address, which I did.

Clicking on the download link today however, September 22nd 2015, for Heimdal Pro 1.10, is the same as it used to be previous to my last download, and I am again simply given the option to either open or save.

I had just assumed that the personal download link via e-mail was now the new norm here on GOTD, but is that not the case anyway?

It changed a couple few times, & it sometimes varied by the country you live in [may still vary AFAIK]. The way it stabilized for US visitors is when you click the download link you get a pop-up, which gives you your choice of sharing via Facebook or Twitter -- which causes the pop-up to show a download button or link -- or requesting the download link to be sent via email.

Indeed, it's back to the original way (at least in the U.S.). I just clicked on today's (9-24-15) GotD download link, and the pop-up window now has the .zip file ready for you to open or save. Yippee ;-)

D*mn -- it's been changed yet again! It's back to either 1) sharing on Social Media (yuck!) or 2) having to enter an email address so that an email will be sent with the link. Ugh.

I fully agree. I Don't Do Social Media. It offends me when sites try to force me there.

Bitsdujour drove me away with that, and if it gets past an email they already have & is easy to kill spam on, GOTD will lose at least me.

One tiny thing alone would tick me off about this pushing- until I have tried something myself first, I'm not saying I like or even downloaded it.

I recently downloaded a program from Bits directly, so maybe they've done away with that.

Check out http://www.topsoftbargains.com/product-category/giveaways/. So far, none of the SM crap. The only downside is that there aren't any comments posted to help decide whether or not to try their giveaways.

Just FWIW...
I don't like F/Book because to me they're grossly unfair to the hearing impaired -- they'll ask me to prove I'm who I say I am, & the only way they provide to do that is with a cell phone. I have no use for a cell phone. But I have a throwaway F/Book acct. I'll use if I have to, until they lock me out of it at least.

And I'll use it with GOTD because they apparently want the shares, but not too often because it's extra time & effort when I don't know if I'll even get to it that day. If there's something I know I want, or like today when someone posted in the forum with problems with the GOTD I'll do it, but I'm talking a few times a month, or less.

The other 3 sites are 'bout the same -- 2 need you to log in, & the 3rd might as well, by the time you type your email in twice. OTOH over time the number of offers they have has decreased quite a bit in quantity & quality, which I suppose speaks to GOTD's strategy, as they've been able to continue with new stuff daily.

My wife got a Safelink free cell [www.safelink.com- the phone they send you is really basic and difficult to use, but for less than $8 on eBay you can get a LG 306G for GSM-heavy areas, or the 305C for CDMA like here- and they're rather impressive for java-based handsets.]

Both models I mention have provisions for hearing implants, are loud, and have a lot of usability.

why not look into it- it's free...

paypal has been after me for a cell number forever.

I didn't know about the 'Topsoftbargains' site,so firstly,thanks for that(free security always useful)...I have all the software I think I need and haven't downloaded anything for a couple of years from GOTD(exept some upgrades) so haven't had all the download problems...

As far as social media goes,It's not for me...I'm that 'social media' friendly,I just have no interest,I never have ... I very rarely even post anything here these days(only to prove I'm not dead,yet)...

I don't mind sharing a good giveaway ....but I would like to give the program a try first.
Note:If you don't want to bother your Facebook friends you can always share it only to yourself(...)

Too bad gotd is losing members just because all of this.
But all in all it looks like it is not that difficult to create a script,just for the fun of it, to get the link without all the hustle.(and even use it as a FF add-on)

There is the official code to put a download link on your site!

I made a shortcut "get giveawayoftheday.html" on my desktop with this content:

<script src="http://export.giveawayoftheday.com/index.js"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">if(gaotdObj.active){document.write('Download');}</script>

When I click that, my browser opens a new tab with a single clickable line "download". That gets the giveaway without any mail fuss. So two clicks is all it takes.

*Might* be easier for some to just copy/paste the contents of the .php file [in sample-js.zip] into a plain text file saved with whatever name & the extension .html.

Whenever I'm not sure the giveaway is any good ,I prefer using a Firefox extension.
The main advantage is that this extension still loads the main giveawayoftheday page
(it only skips FB&co)

If anyone would like to test it please drop a PM.
