Crashes before being able to install.

O/S is 64-bit Windows 7

This is the second offering in as many weeks I've tried from GAOTD. Both times I have the same problem which makes me think it's a GAOTD issue as opposed to the individual software vendor. When I unzip to folder and click on setup it crashes with the following error:

This is exactly what happened to me with the last software from GAOTD I tried to install. For troubleshooting purposes I went to Final Draft and downloaded their software installer. I was able to install it without any issues so it's definitely not an issue with the software nor is it a problem with my computer but rather something related to GAOTD. Incidentally even though it crashes immediately I did get the "Successfully Activated" message so it wouldn't seem that the issue I'm experiencing is related to activation either. I've seen other comments suggesting running setup as administrator - that produced the same results.

The term "Succesfully Activated" is used by the Themida wrapper to signal that it unwrapped the giveaway succesfully in RAM. As next step, it should let the unwrapped installer do its work and install the giveaway.

I never had problems with the Themida wrapper on my W7 machines. I have migrated all of them to Windows 10 and have no problems with the wrapper. Also, on my virtual XP's I have no problems. So I think the problem lies with the combination Themida/your W7 machine.

As Themida runs entirely in RAM and does not write anything to disk, could it be that you have too little free RAM available???

First, something that probably won't work, try right-clicking the executable and selecting "run as administrator" in case it's simply a matter of not having sufficient administrator rights in your administrator account. It's unlikely, but it's an easy check.

"The StackHash error occurs when DEP is invoked and has an issue with whatever application you’re trying to run, The error is related to Data Execution Prevention." One solution, and the quote, is here: Fault Module Name:StackHash Presumably, you'd need to enter an exception for setup.exe.

However, you might consider disabling DEP to confirm that it's what causing the problem. I don't think you'd want to leave DEP disabled but if you confirm that it's the cause then you can investigate why, all of a sudden, it's become an issue. Disable Data Execution Prevention

One other thought, there have been a few posts over the last couple of weeks indicating that AVG is now having a problem with the GOTD installation process on some machines. Kaspersky has had the problem for a long time. If you're using one of those products then you might try (1) setting an exclusion for the setup.gcd file; (2) temporarily disabling the anti-virus; (3) booting in "safe mode with networking", install the program, reboot normally. It could be that you're having the same issue but it presents in a different fashion.

Is that an actual error message you see on screen, or what you're finding in the event viewer, water2ice?

Reason asked, is that there were a couple few time the GOTD setup would run, but the offered program's installer itself would crash. I was able to duplicate the problem in 10, & while I could very well be wrong, I think I remember something similar from the error logs.

Thank you ChrisS for your thoughts. I tried as you suggested, made it an exception in the DEP - restarted computer and then installed as administrator but it did the very same thing as before unfortunately.

This is madness! I mean I can download and install the software vendor's version no problem so why is GAOTD blocking install!!!! I'm thankful for all the replies but very annoyed that GAOTD can't fix the problem since the issue has to do with them.

A few troubleshooting ideas:

1) Download and run "AppCrashView". It should provide some additional information.

2) Download and install "WhoCrashed" and enable crash dumps (instructions at the site). Download procdump and unzip to C:\windows\minidump (the directory WhoCrashed uses). Enter the command: "procdump -ma Setup.exe C:\windows\minidump" then try the GOTD install. Start WhoCrashed, click the "Analyze" button and see if you get any additional/different information. Note: you don't need WhoCrashed if you already have a program that will read dump files but it should be installed as part of your normal toolkit because it's very handy diagnosing a BSOD.

3) Reboot in "Safe mode with netwoking" if you haven't already. See if the GOTD program will install. If it won't then there's something wrong with your basic Windows installation that you might be able to resolve in Step 5. If it will install then the problem is with something that loads above the minimum Safe Mode (anti-virus and other auto-start programs) and you can examine those in Step 4.

4) Download and install "CCleaner" (or use your existing startup monitoring program). Start CCleaner, click "tools", click "startup" and disable everything. Restart the PC, test the GOTD install. If it installs then go back to CCleaner and enable the entries one at a time until you find the problem (reboot and retry the GOTD file each time). Note that you can use the command line and enter the information for each program instead of rebooting if desired.

5) Locate the last GOTD program that you installed. Determine all Windows updates added since that time. (Sort installed programs by "Installed on Date" descending; do the same sort for Installed Updates). Turn off Automatic Updates and uninstall all updates since the last GOTD install and try to install the latest giveaway.

In addition to the above, you should run a full anti-virus and anti-malware scan. I'd also take a quick look at the SMART data just in case something is going wrong with your hard drive.

One other thought - what browser do you use? If you don't use IE then give it a try and see if it will run.

The GOTD installation doesn't actually use the browser but it does use the engine. You don't normally get error messages out of the wrapper which might imply that your problem occurs very early in the process - like in step 1 when it opens a connection for a date check.

IE will give DEP problems on occasion and that might be the error that you're seeing.
