   This is one of those optional Update related updates [know that sounds repetitive]. After installing found Compattelrunner.exe running constantly consuming CPU. It's listed with a few other KB numbers, but it was only after installing KB2952664 [win7 64] that I had this issue.

   In case the KB used is different for your Windows install... Selecting History in the Windows Update dialog by default lists all updates sorted by date - right clicking gives the option for more information, & the Microsoft page that's linked should list the files added or updated, e.g. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2952664

   Updates are listed with or as part of the dialog where you remove programs. Uninstalling required a restart.

   I have that optional update (Installed last Friday).

   I just checked and I have no such exe running and have no performance problems.

   I had a similar situation several months ago when something slipped in along with the updates but was not the updates that caused me to lose control over my anti-virus.

   Maybe you have a similar issue.

   For those of us who lack expertise, what is the best way to see if compattelrunner.exe is running? Will it show on Task Manager, possibly in Processes or Details? I'm not seeing it in Process Lasso or Wise Care. I use Windows8. Am I safe?

   Well, since you posted that Dragonlair [Thanks BTW], I've been watching Task Mgr. & Compattelrunner.exe has not popped up at all in my 2 win7 VMs, or when I spent a lot of time in the win7 32 bit install on my hard drive.

   Uninstalling the update got rid of it entirely with my win7 64 installation, where I spend most of my time, so I don't know what it was interacting with, or what prompted it to always be running. Before I uninstalled the update it was using 2-4% CPU fairly constant [with an i7], with what seemed a fair amount of hard drive activity. I noticed it because it was keeping the CPU out of it's lower clocked, power saving mode [799MHz]. I had tried searching with Google, but only came up with the Microsoft KB pages where it was listed, but no explanation of what it does.

   In win7 64 I could see it was running, consuming 2-4% CPU in Task Mgr. In my other Windows installations it's there in the Windows\ System32 folder, but I haven't seen it run once, & I've been watching Task Mgr. in those other copies of Windows since I read Dragonlair's post yesterday.
