Day Six
Another day with more than one game; this time is five games, all of which have their merits; all five are from the same genre, and as usual all five are FREE. I was initially only going to post Chicken Invaders, but then thought that because the other four games in this genre that I’ve found for this project; Space invaders 2004 and Space Invaders 3D, Invasion 3D and Alien Invaders Attack, were not as good (though that may be a matter of opinion); anyway I though it best to include them with today’s game package. It makes it just that little bit more interesting in my opinion. :) It’s like having five game modes, lol. I think by far Chicken Invaders is the better of the five, due in equal measures for it’s game play and graphics, though neither of the other four are to be sniffed at. There isn’t much of a description for any of the space invaders games apart from strong>Chicken Invaders, but that was because it was almost time for me to post today’s game by the time I decided to include the other four.
I was working against the clock today because I’ve just recovered from a major computer error after installing the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers (in response to getting the latest Crysis release called Warhead this morning – I still haven’t played I yet because of all the problems, but will once today’s games have been posted). On re-starting my computer I got a black screen and the blinking cursor of DOS; then a message appeared saying my windows system had been corrupted. Thankfully I still had that application given away from several months ago, called Eaz-Fix; (I’m definitely buying that software after I’ve purchased Dragon: Naturally Speaking as it’s saved me from losing so much data since getting it via the giveaway project back in January 08 as well as being very convenient {It actually got a really bad write up in the giveaway comments section}); anyway Eaz-Fix enabled me to roll back my system to an earlier time.
Unfortunately I lost about thirty of the games I was testing yesterday, and all the links to the free games sites that I’ve accumulated. Thankfully I’d backed up the bulk of the games I intend to post links to; most of which have word documents attached with the links to the games sites. It should be an easy matter to find the games I’ve lost -. (Phew!) Still, it’s caused some upsets as well as virtually a days worth of time to recover from the problem. I’ve lost all the giveaways back to the day we were given Around the World in 80 days. That I don’t mind as it’s been the only decent game since then, but there were a couple of applications I would have liked to have checked out for longer. It can take quite some time to decide whether to buy one of the many applications given away.
Anyway, I digress (as usual). Five of the games are similar, but at the same time distinctly different (does that make sence?), so I reckon it’s worth downloading all five of them. At least to see if there is one or two you feel are worth keeping. :)

Chicken Invaders (3.1Mb)
Today’s MAIN free game of the weekday is a take on that old classic Space Invaders except this ones much more fun in my opinion. It will have you splitting your sides with the humor inherent in the game. Instead of Space Invaders you must blast away at chickens. The principle difference between space invaders and today’s giveaway is that you get different formations of chickens as opposed to the standard blocks of space invaders, also the graphics are much better than the original space invaders (as you would expect them to be). Eggs take the place of alien missiles, so watch out for them hitting you. This was the first in the series of Chicken Invaders games, there are at least four more, Chicken Invaders Revenge of the Yolk and Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave as well as Christmas specials for both the second and third in the series. Only the first one is free though, courtesy of the abandon ware project.
The storyline goes as follow: Quote:
<blockquote)Sometime in the near future, Earth will be invaded by chickens from another galaxy who are bent on revenge against the human race for oppressing Earth chickens. Take the world's fate in your hands (or at least have an omelet) in this modern rendition of the '80s classic.
"Situation critical. You are our best pilot. Launch immediately on an intercept course to the closest attack wave. Destroy all alien chicken life forms you encounter flapping wildly in space. Incinerate them. I want to see nothing left but DRUMSTICKS! Oh, and soldier, don't eat the eggs...whatever you do, DON'T EAT THE EGGS!"
Features
• 1 or 2 players — play alone or with a friend!
• Increasingly difficult waves — how far can you go?
• Boss levels — watch out, these chickens are serious!
• Weapon power-ups — advance your main weapon through 8 power levels! Collect missiles, too!
• Internet high score tables — compare yourself with people from all over the world!
When I Googled for images of the game, virtually all were for the other versions. Thankfully I found a couple of You Tube videos which show the game play really well. The first one is nearly seven minutes long, and the firs two levels seem to take forever to win so once you’ve seen a few seconds of the beginning of the game play, I’d skip forwards a little. It shows several of the different levels and what you can expect, which include end of stage bosses. I’ve included the last clip even though it wasn’t very well made because it made me laugh. It’s only a short 30 second clip so after you’ve checked out the other, if you haven’t got too bored give it a spin.

Space Invaders 3D: (6.39Mb)
You have to shoot the waves of alien ships - don't let them reach the ground or the game ends. Shoot down the mother ship for bigger points. This is probably the simplest of the three games. Graphically it’s not as sweet as Chicken Invaders, and the game play isn’t as interesting or in my opinion as good, though if you just want some traditional space invaders, then this is your game. . Apart from the 3D perspective, it’s more like the original Space Invader game than either of the other two games I’ve posted today.
If this game runs slow on your computer, go to the options menu and reduce the number of stars in the backgrounds star field.

Space Invaders 2004 (1.99Mb)
This is nothing like your common space invaders. It’s oin the first person perspective. You are based on a planet, and have a 360 degrees view of the planets surface. Your job is to destroy the aliens that move around the planets surface. It can get quite frustrating finishing a level as some of the aliens move very fast, and erratically. Still, it’s worth the challenge.
I didn’t get to check this game out thoroughly because I only found it today, so can’t say whether it has power ups or bosses like some of the other games I’ve posted here.

Invasion 3D: (2.1Mb)
You will need OpenGL installed on your computer to play this game. There’s a very good chance you already have it installed, but if not you can get it free from the following site:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-OpenGL-30-beta-driver-17789-XP64.shtml
This is more like the original in game play than any of the others, though I think the graphics look a little more dated than the rest. However check out the options menu. You’ll find the key bindings for several weapons (4), a shield, besides the usual left and right movement you have keys for movement up and down as well as the usual windows toggle and screen resolutions which surprisingly go up to 1600x1200.
I wasn’t sure whether to include this game because the site I downloaded it from was a yellow on the WOT scale. I tested the file once it had been downloaded and it was clean. I also didn’t get any warning while on the site or downloading from it. So unless you’re really strict with yourself, I’d add this to the bag, as all five games offer something a little different.
The following quote was taken from the games download page:
Invasion 3D is a free 3D arcade game inspired by Space Invaders and available for Windows and Linux. This fun and addictive game features realistic physics simulation, challenging gameplay, stunning visual effects, multiple weapons, hidden bonuses, and more.
