This is the third time around for this little game. It previously received 89% of 202 votes (Feb 07) and 80% of 116 votes (Oct 07), You can read the previous comments by following the links below, though many of the comments were less than complementary about the game. I suggest you try it and see. I've posted some alternative games at the end of this short review (It's not really a review, just a collection of links). I highly recommend the free Command and Conquor download from fileplanet. There's lots of custom content that you can add to the game via the links I've provided at the end of the non-review:

This received some glowing reports despite what I've said above, when it was first given away back in Feb 07, however, the only comment from then worth checking is game seekers comment #32

Here’s my review from previously:

I have several role playing games that are much better than this (IMO), so will pass on today’s offering; but for those who have no RPG’s this ‘will’ be a treat. Get it while the goings hot. If you’ve never played RPG’s and find you really like it, then try one of the many boxed sets you can buy from the bargain bins such as Myst III: Exile or URU Ages beyond Myst, Wizardry 8 and earlier versions of Might and Magic such as version IX that only cost me less than $10 each as you’ll find the first/third person immersivness and the far superior graphics are amazing compared to this giveaway, and, after today, you’ll find them a lot cheaper as well. I’ve seen The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on offer for around $10 over the price this game usually costs, ($30) and used copies for the same price. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Oblivion - well, you haven’t lived :lol: The original called Morrowmind is definitely available for less than the cost of this game and that’s also an amazing game, though graphically inferior to Oblivion (only just)

I give this 6 out of 10 for game play. I’m sure some would score it higher, but I’ve been playing my favorite r.p.g. recently and this just doesn’t compare. It’s certainly worth downloading if you don’t have any games of this genre.

If you have problems running the game try the graphical fix suggested by Tovy (comment #26 Oct 07)Though this may only be a Vista fix.

To download files from fileplanet you may have to register for a free account. I'm with you, Whiterabbit! I'm thrilled that they've offered a couple of RPG's here, even if they aren't my cup of tea, because now I'm playing Oblivion again and loving it. I had to read the manual again to remember the controls, though! :D

If you want to play a game with an Isometric view (where you are looking down on the players from above, like the download today), then you might also want to try Aveyond. It's offered at Big Fish Games, and if you have the game club, it's just $6.99. It's easy to use the controls, easy to install, and fun to play without having to learn a whole new world and mythology.

I'm always having to relearn the key bindings lol, even though I try to kep certain actions for certain keys. I've been using a gaming pad which really helps.

I bough Aveyond from Reflexive games ages ago, though I'd forgotten I had it till you mentioned it, lol.

Hi Txnnok,

If you've not got Oblivion you haven't lived, lol. The most beautiful rpg game I've ever played. Better than any of its type (eg Gothic Riven. The Witcher or the latest release Dragonage: Origins). There's around a 100Gb of mods to download for the game which extends some areas of the game world or adds loads of extra content. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is riveting. I've not played it much since getting its sucessor Fallout 3, but intend returning to it soon. I'm still enthralled by the post apocalyptic feel of Fallout 3 and have only just started to unlock the downloadable content. Oblivion awaits for another day, lol.

A good alternative is its predecessor Morrowind, which can be bought via Steam for a decent price. Theres also as many mods for Morrowind.

The Battle for Wesnoth (265.83Mb)

The Battle for Wesnoth has recieved a few updates since I posted a link to the game here in the forums about 2 years ago. There was no information or images posted so here's some for you now. The download is quite large, so, if you only have dial up I would suggest you use a download manager (just in case you lose the link and have to start over again)

Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.

Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir... step into the boots of a young officer sent to guard a not-so-sleepy frontier outpost... vanquish a horde of undead warriors unleashed by a foul necromancer, who also happens to have taken your brother hostage... guide a band of elvish survivors in an epic quest to find a new home.

Thanks WR. This is a fun (& very cheap) turn based strategy game I have tried a few times through the years. I might try again now except my game backlog is too big with all of the sales there have been. BTW, it has low system requirements. I will probably install this latest iteration on my netbook.

I know what you mean Campy. I've created two new categories in my Steam games list, ones called 'Unplayed games' and the other 'New games'. Both are longer than any other category (such as RPG, RTS, FPS etc). They don't move out of those categories till I've played the game for at least an hour.

I've hardly touched any of the games I bought in the last sale yet. Partyl becasue I've been obsessed with just a couple of the games. :)

The Battle for Wesnoth is a great freebie that's well worth installing onto any gamers computer. (IMO)

Almost two years have gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.8. To thank you for more than 5 million downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present Wesnoth 1.10. You can look at the (translated) release notes to get an idea about what has changed since 1.8. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for download. This stable release is compatible with the last two releases from the 1.9.x series. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the forum thread dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find some, please report them to help us fix them in following releases.
We are also looking for help in several areas, so that many other releases of similar caliber can follow this one. We are especially looking for translators, graphic artists (sprite, portraits, terrain, story images), music composers (a background in classical composition, and good equipment required), sound artists (for special effects), authors (writing/maintaining campaigns, creating content like unit descriptions, improving the in-game help) and, of course, coders. If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the forum or visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev on irc.freenode.net.

I’m used to making a review for each of the new major Wesnoth release, and so it is no exception with the latest version. It’s been almost two years since the last stable release, which was Wesnoth 1.8 released on April 1st, 2010, and 1.10 brings a whole bunch of new features, new graphics and tons of improvements regarding every aspect of the game over the previous versions.

I think 1.10 is probably the most awaited release, and those of you who are fans of Wesnoth could follow its development by trying all those alphas and betas put out by the team behind it. Although I’m quite a regular player and I love this game, I preferred to stay back with 1.8.x and wait for the stable 1.10 to come out before having the real pleasure of playing it as a polished version (by the way, here is a review of an earlier alpha release).

Well, since it’s been out for over two weeks now and I couldn’t get the time to write a review, here it comes.

The main window stays unchanged in 1.10

For those of you who have no idea what Wesnoth is, it’s a 2D turn-based strategy game which takes place by default in a fantasy universe, offering six default factions, campaigns, single and multiplayer (both Internet and hot seat) modes. Players control armies and the battles take place on maps made up by hexagonal tiles. Various add-ons modify the game using the WML language (Wesnoth Markup Language) offering new maps, new factions, different game play,provides single and multiplayer modes. The possibilities are practically limitless, and the user-made content is great. There are popular maps like Creep War (with dozens of variants), Conquest (which modifies the gameplay completely), or eras that put the player in a an even more dynamic, more fantasy-like universe (take the Era of Magic for example). These are only few examples though, hundreds or maybe thousands of them are available on the add-ons server. If you ask me though, with few exceptions, I always preferred the default maps and era for a serious game. A ladder for statistics is also available, and the same goes for user registration, which can be done via the forums – you can register on the forum and use the same username and password in-game too.

Now let’s see what exactly changed in 1.10, and what new features were introduced.

There is a new mainline campaign, called “Dead Water”, which raises the number of official campaigns bundled by default to no less than 16, and that is without the introductory tutorial and the hundreds of campaigns available via the add-on menu. Dead Water revolves around the mermen race, and you will have to lead a young merman to ascend to his kingdom’s throne. This campaign is rated as intermediate difficulty level and contains 10 scenarios.

New unit animations are available for the Saurians, part of the Drake faction. Also, new graphics for several terrain tiles were made and new terrain types were introduced. The new graphics include revamped grassland, bridges, as well as several new tiles. These new improvements really make maps and lightning look a lot more appealing to the eye. Slowed units are now tinted light blue.

A new feature called Planning mode has been introduced, and it allows to simulate unit movements and attacks, without actually doing it. You can toggle it by pressing P or set it in the Preferences to be enabled by default when the game starts.

A new option when creating a new game has been implemented, “Shuffle sides”, to let Wesnoth assign random sides to players when the game starts.

Except for those already known from previous versions, four new default maps come with Wesnoth 1.10, including 2p – Aethermaw, 2p – Arcanclave Citadel, 2p – Thousand Stings Garrison and 6p – Volcano. Maps which are already well-known from 1.8 and before have also received fixes and minor modifications.

The in-game editor also received improvements, like the possibility to open several maps at a time.

You can remove several add-ons at a time by using the new window that allows to check each add-on should be removed. This saves time compared to the old method, which only allowed to remove an add-on and then rebuild the cache each time.

The music was also enriched with two new tracks.

Content creators will be glad to find out that major Lua and WML (the two scripting languages used by Wesnoth) improvements have been made.

There is also a WML plugin for the Eclipse IDE, providing features like syntax highlighting and autocompletion.

It looks like in Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha at least, the configuration directory is located inside ~/.local/share/wesnoth/1.10, while the preferences file can be found inside ~/.config/wesnoth/preferences. I don’t know if this is a Ubuntu-specific modification or this is how Wesnoth stores its configuration files now (as opposed to the usual ~/.wesnoth1.6 or ~/.wesnoth1.8 directories). At least for me, this doesn’t make it easier to access it, and the old style seems to be better.

The multiplayer server

I think that it’s impossible to list all the changes from 1.8 here, and I’m sure there is a good deal of them I’m not even aware of.

Wesnoth already built itself a great deal of popularity, and the community is great. There are the forums, the IRC channel (#wesnoth @ Freenode), the ladder third-party project, the user-made content and much, much more.

Wesnoth 1.10 is really an impressive release, with tons of improvements and new features. This can only add to the delight of the long time players and make new players curious to try it out.
