I've only read 14, so you're ahead of me, Paulga. I would have expected my number to be higher, as I have read thousands of books. Maybe we should come up with our own list!
Posted 16 years ago # -
well, i've read at least 16. definitely more than that, but i tried not to count ones i'd read for school and didn't either enjoy or remember.
and i'm not a man.
;DPosted 16 years ago # -
I've seen you, FunkyMom, and you are definitely NOT a man!

As with many who posted feedback to that blog, I have serious reservations about that list. It seems to reflect one fellow's rather eclectic taste rather than a quest for universal consensus. Not sure a consensus is even possible if limited to 100 books, and disputes over ranking would cause quite a ruckus in the stacks. IMHO, a bit too much emphasis on books about or written by drug users, but I thank him for reminding me to read 'Leviathan' before I pass on. (not that I see myself forming a new govt, but you never know)
My tastes really diverge where he sees fit to tack on the bible and MalcomX, but omits Fountainhead, LOTR, Sherlock Holmes, Gulliver's Travels, Galileo's 'The Assayer', sci fi greats too numerous to mention, one of the many science/knowledge compendiums, e.g., Boorstin's 'The Discoverers' or H.G. Wells' 'Outline of History' or even the Columbia/Viking Desktop Encyclopedia.
Anyway, put me down for 38, many of 'em still on my shelves or in boxes for a reread during the coming nuclear winter.
Need a ruling from the umpire... may I have extra credit for reading Atlas Shrugged 4 times?Posted 16 years ago # -
Rune - Have you tried reading Webster's New Unabridged Dictionary or the Talking Phone Book? I've read 13 from the list and, like you, have several on the shelf, unread. Some novels beyond a century old are difficult to follow. Are you certain that none of the authors you sited were not drug users? I do agree, the list is biased , but it's just a list. I think you should compile one of your own. I'd love to see it! Really! :)

I found it difficult to read the Talking Phonebook what with all that chattering in the background. :-) Never read a dictionary straight through, but have a habit of always reading at least 10 to 20 entries when looking up a word, so technically, over 50+ years, maybe I'm halfway through one?
I'll grant you, some of other authors probably tried weed, absinthe, powders, etc. (but didn't inhale) Old Sammy Clemmons, for one. Undoubtedly anyone initially involved with cobbling together the bible, not to mention half the monks who rewrote and retranslated it 100 times up in those tiny little cubicles. :-)
As for books "over a century old", you do know it's okay to read them in something other than their original tongue, right? I couldn't have waded through 'The Assayer' in Italian, much less Sun Tzu's original scrolls!
To back up that which was not intended as a brag, maybe I'll admiral seeds you a snapshot of some of them what are sitting on a shelf in the den.

I know its just a list compiled by four people and supposed to be the "most read" and i was surprised not to see Gullivers Travels,Ivanhoe,Black Beauty, and perhaps those books were classed as "read when young" however as i read on average two books per week and have done so for about 50 years i was still surprised to have read 15 on the list, and i note thats about the average amount so far from those who made comment, that would indicate to me that its a pretty fair list, my reason to credit this was because over the years i have looked at other, Best Read, Most Read.....and so forth lists, and usually only have read one or two! what i would be interested in finding out from the forum, what were the books we read that amounted to 14 to 16? anyway my books were as follows
The Great Gatsby
The Prince
Slaughterhouse
The Republic
Brothers Of Karamazov
The Catcher In The Rye
For Whom The Bell Tools
The Picture Of Dorian Gray
The Grapes Of Wrath
Brave New World
Call Of The Wild
Swiss Family Robinson
Catch 22
Lord Of The Flies

Some remarks from knowitalllox :
It's okay when you don't read that book,
#7 because that goes without saying (trust me, I am mother-in-law, twice)
#6 because that's none of your business
#5 because it's understood that you will regularly do what you have to do
#4 the most important thing is that you do IT
#1 when you are quite sure how to do itPosted 16 years ago # -
i'm not going back over the whole list, but from pauls read list:
gatsby
slaughterhouse (there should have been more vonnegut on that list)
the republic
catcher in the rye
dorian gray
brave new world
catch 22
lord of the fliesPosted 16 years ago # -
FunkyMiss.....I agree with you. Vonnegut has always been my favorite author. "Cat's Cradle" (Ice-9 anyone?), "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", "Breakfast Of Champions".....all classics in my mind.
Authors left out:
James Patterson
Erle Stanley Gardner
Agatha Christie
Dean Koontz (My favorite living author. Try reading "Life Expectancy".....one of the best books I have ever read!)Here's a fantastic book left out:
"The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger.....An instant classic the day she finished writing it. Maybe a beer-guzzling, WWF-watching, NASCAR-fanatical, tobacco-chewing guy wouldn't like it, but I did.
Posted 16 years ago # -
yeah, dan. i love vonnegut, agatha christie. dean koontz sometimes, he seems to be hit or miss for me, either it's a really great book or it's really not.
i didn't notice, was stephen king on the list? the shining, carrie, misery.......
and how about arthur conan doyle, you can't have a list of must read books for men and not include sherlock holmes!
-------------------------------------
i've been wanting to read the time travelers wife. maybe one day my child will be old enough so that i'll have time to read a whole book. since i was pregnant, i've only been able to read short stories, because very often days (and sadly, sometimes weeks) will go by without me having a few minutes to read.although, i suppose if i gave up the internet, i might find a little more time......
