Thanx!

Hey fullbug,
this is a style of games which I also enjoy so here it goes. And according to McAfee all have safe ratings (Shame they haven't changed it yet for Giveaway of the Day).SuperCow is available at iwin as a free full version download with advertising. This is similar to Turtle Odyssey and probably better.
http://www.iwin.com/Dungeon Raider also known as Azangara is available at the following link. This was previously given away here and is very good.
There is also Shark Attack Deep Sea Adventure which is basically Kenny Deep Sea Adventure also at the same site. When you close the game it opens up to their home web page. This site has been tested by many members here and so far we have found them to be safe of Adware/Spyware.
http://www.gametop.com/Most Fun have a selection including Foxy Jumper (similar to Superstar Chefs), SuperMario and SuperSonic. You may need to download a player for some of these games.

Fullbug.....If you're not looking specifically for free games, my alltime favorite platform game is Bud Redhead. I got mine from Reflexive Arcade http://www.reflexive.com/. It is well worth the $19.99 I paid for it. Another good one is the Granny series.... Granny in Paradise, Super Granny 3 & 4 etc. Also the Wonderland games, the best of which is Wonderland Secret Worlds. There's Wonderland Adventures, but that's not a platform "side scrolling" game. It's sort of a puzzle game on the order of Robox where you have to figure out the way to the exit in order to get to the next level. Really fun and lots of levels. Their website is http://www.midnightsynergy.com/secretworlds/. I actually got all these at Reflexive but I know Granny is available lots of other places; Real Arcade, BigFish etc. But Bud Redhead and the Wonderland games you don't see just anywhere. At least I haven't. There's also one called The Tuttles, I only played the demo but it was good and I'm thinking of buying it. I hesitate to buy games b/c I'm always worried after I buy they'll offer it free here at GGOTD. :)

Great, thanx people, will check all those out....

fullbug, this is a platform game that, I think, is great, if you like this kind of run and shoot action. Lots of different weapons and power-ups, and it's totally FREE. The name of it is Hurrican. You might have to copy and paste the link because I'm not sure how to post links yet. I'm new to the forums, so this is my "test" post. :)

Update: I see that the link posted just fine. Good to know.

Hi Buckleysmom,
The Games you mentioned including Bud Redhead, The Tuttles and the Wonderland Series are available at Bigfish Games. I understand your concern that some of these may become available at a later date. The beauty of Bigfish Games is that if you sign up for a subscription the games are $7 each which is a considerable saving on $20. You can by three games for the regular price of one.
Just something for you to consider.Posted 16 years ago # -
welcome alorotom!

The two greatest platformers on Windows:
It's the best one ever. The controls are perfect, the level designs are huge without being disorienting, and the story is epic. The surreal setting is also neat. I still haven't gotten the secret ending.
Knytt and Knytt Stories
Like Cave Story, but shorter, and without shooting. Oh, and they're the most beautiful games that I've ever played. Seriously, the music, graphics, and level designs give an atmosphere like no other.
I'll have more later, but these are my favorites.

robm....I actually just joined BigFish about a week ago because of someone mentioning it here in one of the threads. I like it better than Real Arcade and you're right the prices are great! I have a credit at RA that expires on April 29th so after I use it I'll be doing more at BigFish.
Does anyone have a really good search and find game to recommend? I've been checking out some like Mortimer Beckett, Kate West, The Scruffs etc. but I'm having trouble deciding what to get.

Lockett.....your Cave Story link didn't work, but a Google search found the game here: http://www.acid-play.com/download/cave-story. Looks interesting.

funkymom, thanks much for the welcome.

Hi Buckleysmom. You asked about really good search and find games, I recommend Syberia.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/syberia/index.html
The link is for the first one that came out, but Syberia II is out now and it finishes the story. Beautiful graphics and amazing story line.
fullbug, these aren't platform games, but I bet your wife would love them too.

Thank you Alorotom, but I was really looking for freeware....

Thank you Alorotom, but I was really looking for freeware....
Erm, weren't they?
Technically, they aren't freeware, but old console games are free to download and play on various emulators. The Genesis had the best platformers of the 16-bit consoles, in my opinion. Here are some of my favorites:
Earthworm Jim
One of the best games ever, and not just because of the platforming. The level designs and controls are great, but what makes it really shine are the loads of minigames and crazy humor. The graphics are also some of the best on the Genesis.
Tinhead
Earthworm Jim's levels are extremely linear, but Tinhead's are large and expansive. The controls aren't quite as good as Earthworm Jim's, but they work well enough. The music and graphics are also great.
Ristar
Ristar was Sega's answer to Kirby back in the 90s. Both were small and rotund, both were simple, innocent creatures, and both had crazy game mechanics. While Kirby sucked his enemies into himself to gain their abilities, Ristar used his extendable arms as grappling hooks, slingshots, and weapons(he smashes enemies into his own face). Ristar's levels are large, with plenty of opportunities for exploration, and the graphics are exceptionally bright and colorful for the Genesis. The music also conveys the carefree mood nicely.
Vectorman
Vectorman is considered by many to be the best Genesis game ever. I disagree(Earthworm Jim is loads better, in my opinion), but I can't deny that it's incredible. The levels are as expansive as those in Tinhead, and the graphics look like something on the SNES. The controls aren't the best, but they work well, and the techno music is almost enough to make me forget about the controls(I like it and I don't even like techno). It's pretty hard, though.
You can download all of the games that I mentioned here. You have to get a site account to download the games, but I wouldn't go anywhere else(console dump sites tend to be seedy).
You can download my favorite Genesis emulator (Gens) here.
You'll notice that I left out Sonic the Hedgehog. Why? Well, to be frank, I just don't like it all that much. It's also well-known enough that it doesn't need to be mentioned. You can pick it up along with the other games and see if you like it.
You might have guessed that I'm a retro gamer. Well, I am. In all, I have about 15 different emulators on my computer:
Gens for the Genesis
SNES9x for the SNES
NESTen for the NES
WinUAE and WinFellow for the Amiga
DOSBox for the PC 386/486
Hoxs64 for the C64
WinAPE and CaPriCe for the CPC
RealSpectrum and ZXSpin for the ZX Spectrum
Atari800Win for the Atari 8-bit computers
BeebEm for the BBC MicroI have a few more, too, but I don't use them(due either to a lack of working game dumps, buggy emulation, or an incomprehensible interface).
I must look like a complete nerd.

Oh, that's right - if I wasn't, I wouldn't review games here.

Has anybody here used GameTap before? I ran into it today by accident and then I saw this thread, but nobody seems to have mentioned it. This is probably a bad symptom because some of you folks find the best sites I have ever found.
This site seems too good to be true, all that free stuff. I think you have to install their software before using it. I won't touch it with a ten foot pole until I hear something positive from the experts.

GameTap is a client that you play games through. It's like Steam.
Only the old games are free.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks Lockett,
I have Steam, so I'll give GameTap a try. Also, for the OP, those free old games must include platform games as well.

Yes, but it's better to use an emulator, since you're using the original game file. I don't see why anyone would bother to play the free GameTap games at all(except for the arcade titles, since MAME has the absolute worst interface of any emulator ever).

Thanx for the Syberia link Alorotom, looks interesting....
