Running Special Event Racing gives me a "Memory Access Violation" error and I have 2 gigs. How can that be?

I guess I am out of luck. I've done all I could but still no go and this is a computer that runs HL2 without a problem

memory access violation isn't running out.

I see..., I guess that's what I get from taking free advice! Somebody posted in the comments section that the origin of the error laid in the lack of sufficient RAM. I have tried and tried many many things and not a single one solved it.
The problem maybe caused by the Nvidia driver I've got. Maybe I made a mistake by upgrading it to the last stable version. I do notice that the game tries to change the resolution and fails. There are no errors logged in the Event Viewer and I can find nothing wrong with my system.
I started several games I own and they all run fine. I'm stumped.

well, drivers do that sort of thing. mav's are generally actions like the memory set aside for textures getting written to by the audio data, stupid errors like that.

A Memory Access Violation has nothing to do with having insufficient memory - it is more likely related to the program trying to access a memory location that it shouldn't have access to. First step I would advise is check your versions of DirectX, Video and Sound drivers are the latest available.
For the record it ran perfectly - 1st attempt - Maximum Detail - on my PC.
Win XP Pro SP2 - Intel C2D E6600, nForce 680i SLI chipset, nVidia 8800GTS 320MB, Creative SB Live, 2GB RAM
Drivers - nVidia ForceWare 169.21, DirectX 9.0c (March 2008 Release)
It is important to make sure you know your system - and that everything is kept current - also know what else is running on your computer when trying to launch games - sometimes other programs can conflict with software such as games.
Worth a read (if you haven't already)

I donĀ“t have state of the art hardware, but I always try to keep all my devices up to date. My NVidia drivers are the 196.21 version, but I am checking now my DirectX which is the march 08 version of 9.0c, but there are some debug entries that shouldn't be there. That may be the root of the problem so I am looking into it.
At any rate, thank you BuBBy for the very useful and lengthy reading material,
