I am completely new to this site. Please could anyone explain, simply, how I get started downloading these great games? I do not have a zip utility or need one, except for this site. Is there a small one just to open these games? Is it safe to download from the internet? I have Vista home premium on a laptop. I hope some clever person will take the time to help me. thanks
getting started

To start with, navigate to the download page and click on the 'download [titlename] now' button, then on the download button at wikisend, and save the zip file to your hard drive, rather than 'open it from it's present location', or whatever alternative is presented.
If I understand correctly, Vista is like XP- it has the zip format as a 'native' format to open, and sees zip archives as a special kind of folder. (I don't have either one- hearsay evidence only)
I suggest making a directory named for the item being downloaded first to keep them separated. Then you should be able to click on the zip, mark all the files inside and copy them into the same directory.
If you need (actually, I can state with good odds that eventually you *will* need, given the number of archives that aren't zip format) an archive utility, you should do fairly well with Zipgenius; use it to extract the files to the same folder.
[Download safety, as you put your question, is a bit fluffy to answer in less than a very long lecture, but this site's had a good track record- so for here, it should be.]
At that point, double click on the extracted readme.txt file (it may appear simply as 'readme', depending on view settings) to open it in notepad and follow the directions you'll find inside.
Running Vista, you may have to run setup/activate with administrator privileges, and need to run the game in winxp compatibility mode.
speaking strictly from personal and clearly inexperienced beliefs, my condolences for the OS on board, and hope it's an awesome laptop. I make no claim to 'clever', but I do have experience, which should do.
good luck and happy hunting.

Hi Brit and welcome to this most friendly, helpful & interesting forum.
I have XP SP2, so as GoodGOTD said, can't help u w Vista.
I use iZArc to unZip. Don't know if it's good or not, but it does the job. But I'm the least knowledgeable one around here, so don't listen to me.Don't know about other sites, but I consider this site very safe. Been here since late August, never a problem.
Regarding dwlding Games, u should know that our Resident Expert in that domain is WhiteRabbit. He will protest the title, but he knows everything under the Sun regarding Games/Installs/Special folders & H2 organize ur HD - in vue of the avalanche (or deluge?) of new stuff u are going to get from here - believe me, most of us have bought new HD or new PCs, bc the old ones have been brought to their knees ;) So, see WR reviews in the page-du-jour almost everyday (his health permitting) and he also gives mini-tech tutorials there & here. Everything I know, I learned from him.
So, my advice is to get comfortable in a good chair & a cup of tea, search the archives for his posts & threads, and read as much as u can - You'll have a few days of reading at least, but u'll learn A LOT!!
I'm still going back regularly to the archives to read old threads.Be prepared, ur HD will be flooded by Games & SW - not only those from the official daily offers, but the members here are very resourceful and are constantly posting links to freeware or special offers they find.
And also be prepared to be flooded by knowledge :-0
Have fun! See u around!Amicalement, Mangoette / Princess of Clowness, Manu

Thank you for your help everyone. I have downloaded a couple of games
successfully & enjoyed them muchly.Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi Brit. I hope you've enjoyed the last five months. :) I've not posted much in the way of tech advice recently, but you will find loads of freeware games, many of which are actually commercial games in disguise. I highly recommend the following site:
http:/www.gametop.com
There's around 80 games for free. The only negative about it is that whenever you play one of the games from gametop, on closing it down your browser is opened to the gametop site. However I've tested virtually all of the games and found them all to be clean of viri and other malware (apart from the pseudo hijacking (it doesn't actually hijack your browser, just opens it up. Once you close it down, that’s it, no other effects.

Hi Whrabbit, I don't like shooter/alien/explosion games so have only tried a few GGOTD's Atlantis, Fashion story, Japan2 downloaded fine & I thought it was going to be a great w/e when a h.o.g. came up on Sun. but I had all the probs & never got it.
Already took your advice from elsewhere on the site re Pharoah puzzle, very good, Fairy puzzle v. pretty & harder than it looks, will try Eldorado soon. Always read your reviews even when the game is not for me, Thanks to GGOTD & thanks for all your hard work & advice.Posted 16 years ago # -
A pleasure Brit. That's a shame about the H.O.G. game. There's always a chance they may put it up again soon becuse of all the problems community members have had; hopefully with a fix as well. I was one o the lucky ones that despite a few crashes have been able to play the game easily.

Greetings LeKanaw,
In his member profile he claims to be a software developer from Malaysia and that he joined today so, I don't think we are to far off the mark when we say 'scam'.
