My son used to have a red tail hawk when he was a teen when we lived in So. Calif. He was licensed by the Fish & Game Dept. He and his friends took birds that were thrown out of the nest by mama or were found injured, and they'd raise them, train them to catch their own prey and keep them until they were ready to be released back into the wild after they were rehabilitated.
One day he had his hawk tied to it's perch in the front yard, (they all had leather jesses around their feet to restrain them and usually had a hood on when traveling), and we noticed a snake slithering right towards it. We were mesmerized. We knew what was going to happen, but didn't stop anything. Who wants to tamper with "Mother Nature"? What a fight that snake put up!
We had a shed out back where he had an owl that was the meanest little critter ever. If you can get them while their eyes are still blue, they will 'imprint' to you and think you're their mama! Not this one. He had brought it home in a temporary box which he stuck in the family room. Late that night I heard a strange noise, went to the kitchen, turned on the light and there it was, perched on the dishwasher handle hissing at me! I yelled for son (who was sleep in the back of the house) to get his glove and get that bird!
Around the same time, he brought home a baby squirrel, which ended up in the bread box on the kitchen counter. Sweet little thing til it bit me! We even played tug of war once with a chicken bone. Time came to release the squirrel, but also the same time to release that owl! Said NO WAY am I turning that squirrel loose into the field across the road as he released his owl! That would be bye bye squirrel immediately! We ended up taking the squirrel to the harbor where there were lots of other squirrels around the rocks there as well as outside restaurant tables so the squirrels were well fed!
Another quick story.. our sons friend had a golden eagle. Mama kept tossing it out of the nest, so his friend had a special permit to rehab. the eagle as they are endangered. It (as were the other birds of prey), were trained to come back to their arm for food when flight training. They had a long leather glove on. Well, the eagle was released on Camp Pendleton, (So. Calif.), all was well, until the day someone was fishing from the beach . He reeled his fish in, and just as the guys arm was up holding the fish, there landed that eagle on the guys arm after the fish! Since that could be dangerous the bird was taken back into "protective custody"!
