I don't exactly know 'what' they are, but I do know I don't want them, and the best way to find them is walk around your yard barefoot! OUCH! Just make sure, when digging them out, is make a small circle around them as deep as you can and then yank them out, their root is long, like a skinny carrot.

yeah, some relative to a thistle, I just thought the details were interesting. right after the photo shoot, I killed it.
Trust in Me, I'm with the High Command:
Trowels are freaking useless when the sticker plants are 4 feet across and 5 high. with an inch and a half thick main stalk.
and when the blackberries are over an inch thick and up to the roof, direct jousting and playing fair works not at all.
really.
Thus I crafted my Vorpal Blades for yard battle, major mods from last year comprised of a vine hook & pusher notch on the 2 foot machete, a vine hook on the long handled 2 foot blade, and I totally re-engineered the nefarious vine chopper that gets 'em coming and going.

GOOD: you've got all the ammunition needed to fight the weed war! Pretty good at improvising with what you have on hand!
1: As for those sticker plants getting THAT big, mine don't get that large, but if so, use a pointy shovel and dig deeper.
2: Don't don't plant the blackberries so close to the house! Mine are in a separate section in the yard, and they're thornless.
3: Looks like all your weeders are in need of some oiling or something! *-)Posted 16 years ago # -
lets take this to the dnr thread, I get back to the laptop I'll answer the rest there- but:
2: Don't don't plant the blackberries so close to the house!
I've not planted anything around here- blackberry, scotch broom or rambler rose. or sweet pea, lemon balm or ivy.
those are volunteers, the whole lot of them!
blackberry vines truly are the borg of oregon- though I note with surprise that the rambler roses are right up there, and may be winning.

Thanks for the welcome! I like it here, so I'll be staying.
I can make out a knob thing in the upper right. Do you wind it to make it spin?
Also...it looks pretty old and unusual, so I probably won't know even after the big reveal!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi Busy Lady.....yep it has a kind of knob like thing on top

I don't know about anyone else, but I got the following email this morning from DivShare:
Dear Lauri,

copmom......the "what is it"......is held in hand,...small enough to fit in palm, holds water, nothing attached to it, base is glass, in my case, but they come in other material?
it could be said that its a faucet, as its used, "for special applications"

I'm thinking of a table-top fountain. What is bugging me, though, is that is can be referred to as a gun (paint gun, glue gun, nail gun, water gun, cap gun, etc.). The "cloud" of "smoke" is a wonder as well. The only one on my list that is designed for water is a is a water gun--but water guns don't swirl and billow.
Sigh. I think you've got me.
