talking about games i have to put in my 2 cents:) lol I am not sure if you like RPG's but they are my favorite genre and one i would like to mention is called Dizzy it was for the old nintendo and took almost 8 months to actually beat the darn thing i had bought if off of home shopping network for i think $40 back in the early 90's i haven't seen it offered very often on ebay or anywhere for that matter . I remember one part being you rode in a little cart to get from one part of the city to another with you being a little egg and he lived in the tree house village and was out to save daisy (another egg) it was just a great story line and harder then heck to beat i do still have the game but yet again need to buy another nintendo as we all know they don't last long when a little one is playing on them:) And one more rpg that i really liked was called lufia :) a blue haired character that was difficult.

Thanks for the great find I Dahl! Gem Towers is definately keeping my interest (although the cooking and laundry isn't getting done). It is NOT a no-brainer game, I'm really hooked.
One question though....anyone know how to pause this game? Once I start I can't find a way to pause it, the ESC ends the game and P (or any other key for that matter) doesn't do it. No coffee refills, potty or cigarette breaks...but I've made it over 120,000.
Help?

AAG, I haven't found a way to pause the fiendish thing either! It is "do" or "not do"...there is no "try"! heheh! You are more than welcome, I've very happy to see someone else respects this game as I do. This isn't your mother's match three:))))I've been too sick:( 'tis the season for colds and flu)to play the last couple of days, what energy I had I worked on FWF's project and then I crashed and burned. My head is so fuzzy I don't remember what my highest score was, I just remember I went from not understanding why I couldn't make it through level one, to finally understanding the game play, and making it to level 15 before it dealt me the death blow.I actually felt a sense of accomplishment!
I hope you will be my play buddy and we can see how far we can get with this monster. I love how every time you play, it is a new game, you never know what you'll get.
Bah!! Dishes will always be there waiting when you get back! :) Maybe if WhiteRabbit writes a good review of it a few more people will give it a try. I know the author wrote another award winning game, but I can't find it.Bluhoteyes, I like RPG's too, this summer Nickey, who is my 6 year old grandson, and I played "Syberia". I had wanted to see that game for a long time and with a great deal of luck got it for 5 bucks on ebay including shipping. We made it 2/3 of the way through before I found GGAOTD... he's been nagging me to get back to it. BTW, he plays as good as an adult, his mind is full of things to try and often makes real contributions to our progress.
Dizzy huh? I played Donkey Kong Country on Nintendo (Wasn't good at it but loved it anyway)I don't have a Nintendo now, I just got a Playstation2 for the grandkids and for the fact you can play movies and cd's easily on it. Actually the Playstation game that I've found to be a hit around here is Guitar Hero... I call it my boy honey, the guys keep coming over to knock each other off the bathroom wall!Hehehe! Brothers, the competition never ends! *rolls eyes, whistles tunelessly and looks at ceiling* I wouldn't have anything to do with that! heheh.WR, I think I might live...still a sicky but I'm upright!!!

Ok I bit. Downloaded Gem Tower To give me a break from The Treasures Of Montezuma and working on my poll results. BTW I scrolled further down on the Gem Tower page and I snagged the "Tiny Font" zip. Never can have too many fonts. :) Thanks All for all these links. Now to find the time to give them justice and learn how they work, what they do or WIN a game!

Hi Hoss! Glad you liked it... all these lovely commercial games, and what is my favorite:)))) a freebie!! Wouldn't you know?!? It is a challenge isn't it? But fun too, addictive like a Rubic's cube.
Here's a link again in case someone wants to try this game without reading through these posts. Gem Towers:

I must write a review of this game sometime soon (I think I've already said that lol). As with some of the games Freeware Fan has posted over the past week, this game is one excellent game and I'm surprised it's not commercial. I wonder if the admin’s will put the game in the games section of the freeware library as it certainly deserves to be placed there. I ad no problems with the site and the game tested negative for any malware, apart from some psychological brainwashing bug that causes you to spend far too much time playing the game when you should be doing something more constructive. Though I regard such games as great brain training and therefore a valuable resource, lol Maybe I should play more puzzles as opposed to fps, and rpg games lol, then I wouldn’t keep forgetting to post links etc, which I do almost every day.

Hi, ldahl, is it possible you met his brother ?

This friendly guy is sitting on and in my head for about 2 weeks now. Several liters chicken soup didn't help very much, and WR's receipt - well I have the same restrictions as the UK-Rabbit; getting my flush/intoxication (what's the right word ?) from the doc. But sleeping, sleeping, sleeping, that's it.
Will try Gem Towers later.DON'T have a coughy day or night

Hi, Whiterabbit, are you the early bird, or did you sleep all the afternoon like I did?
I always liked the nights, nobody is demanding anything; in my active time my day had sometimes 48 hours, and I was very active... and now...well, now I have time for games, and for sorting my fonts, and for (hopefully) beautifying my photos and, for listening to all those cd we have collected in that period, we never had time to listen - yes after all it's quite nice having retired.Have a good morning Stephen and a good evening idahl - keep on playing !
grayloxPosted 16 years ago # -
Hi Grauylox, yeah i'm a night owl. I sleep most of the day and some of the night (14 to 16 hours a day) I'm never the early bird these days. I'n fact I'm off to grab three hours before the next giveaway. I was contemplating writing a review of on of Freeware fans great games he's been posting, but my head is starting to get fuzzy gain, lol. Have you tried Realms yet. While setting the game u it looks seriously retro, but the actual game is actually really great looikng, though is still retro. But for this game it actually adds to the fun. I'll be reviewing it after toys giveaway provided nothing crops up.
later
Have a great day. btw, I agree wit you wholeheartely with you about the nights not having any demands placed upon you.
Posted 16 years ago # -
I just played 14 levels and got 54280 points. The stars got me:( I think it's time to go get some hot tea,and see what FWF has been up to.
Posted 16 years ago # -
WR, read the dispute over Game Top - trusting in your words I downloaded - downloaded -downloaded...
no, did not try Realms yet, don't know if my system is ok for that game. The graphic card is not the youngest ( like the owner ) and the drivers are not updated for quite a while. Last time I did it,the puter was really mad afterwards.

Hi Graylox,
I have two spare video cards, an NVidia FX 5200 128Mb and an ATI 9200 128Mb video card. The former supports pixel shader 2.0 which you require for some of the more recent games (but not the latest big budget games which use DX10 and require a minimum of pixel shader 3.0 to run. The latter will also support quite a lot of games, but none of the big budget games from the last year or so (eg it wont support games like Battlfield 2 but does support Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 1942 (can you tell tat the Battlefield series is my favorite, lol) What I mean by all of that is that the NVidia card is the better card. You can have either one for free as I no longer have a use for them. Though uyou'll have to contact the administrators or possibly the moderators to get my Email sent to yours. I'm assuming they have these as we require to post our Emails when posting on the comments section and if I remember rightly when we register for the forums.
to the Administrators and moderators I give you permission to release my Email to graylox and indeed to anyone else who would like the second graphics card Both require AGP sockets on the Motherboard (MoBo). If your MoBo is relatively new it probably wont support the cards though as PCI-E is becoming the standard for video cards as it's much faster. (although a few MoBo manufacturers are still using the AGP socket in budget MoBo's and some are even putting both types on theirs. I also have an even older PCI video card that's not as powerful, but will suffice for virtually all of the games given away on the giveaway project A PowerColor Radeon 7000 32MB PCI Video Card, DVI-I / TV-Out. The first two have standard monitor sockets (not DVI -I) and the ATI card has a 64 bit TV socket as well. The main reason I'm offering them for free is that I recently had a clear out and threw away several expansion cards which included older video and sound cards. They had gone past their sell by dates with respect to today’s software; which if I wait long enough the same will happen to the above cards. It's much better in my opinion to pass them on to those who could p[possibly use them.
Unfortunately I’m not allowed to post my Email address any more. The moderators were kind enough in the past to allow me to do so as I was passing on loads of games I no longer wanted (shop bought CD's and DVD's as opposed to digital downloads)

Everyone's raving about Gem Towers.. so had to get it. When installed and I click on the .exe it says: Runtime error 7008: Object does not exist at line 298
Anyone able to help with this?Posted 16 years ago # -
Try deleting it and re-downloading it. Also do some maintainance such as updating your common drivers such as your video drivers etc. If you don't know what type of graphics card you have just run the dxdiag command from the run menu accessible from the start menu. Once opened the DXdiagnostics window gives you a wealth of information. you can see which type of video card, or chip set you have by clicking on the display tab. Once you've found tat out; it's alost certainly going to be an NVidia or an ATI chip base so just google the one thats appropriate. Once you get to the home page you'll find a search engine just ytpe in graphics drivers. There are other hings you may have to do to fix it though. I suggest you read the following:
http://www.pcperformancetools.com/fixing-runtime-errors.htm
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/9y92594t(VS.80).aspx
If they don't help try googling various word combinations suchas fixing run time errors etc.
I hope this helps.

There are a number of reasons it could be giving you this error, a problem in your registry, a conflict in the program(bug)with your graphic card or your version of DX. It might be as simple a fix as changing your screen resolution or cleaning your registry a tiny bit(do you install and uninstall quite a bit?). Or conversely, it might be a programing glitch with Dark Basic and there would be nothing you could do except try it again or try a different computer. Good luck! I have my fingers crossed that WR suggestions work out for you. Solid advise. There is a problem with a line of code in the program where it isn't getting the answer it needs to continue.

Hi, Whiterabbit,
thank you very much for your kindness, offering that video card !!!! You act like a good old friend.
By now I can not say yes or no, have to do some research first, know much too little about all that tech.
The guy, who is trying to bear with me, holds, that it's not a good idea, to replace the graphics card, because the computer is quite outdated.
BUT I'll have to figure that out by my own. Thanks again, and yes the BuBBies may give you my e-mail address.

Runtime error 7008: Object does not exist at line 298
Anyone able to help with this? The obvious answer would be, "The programmer could help"
It is an unhandled programming error in the game - The programmer could just look at line 298 and see what it is trying to do
Posted 16 years ago # -
Bubby, you are so right, I wish I could find the programmer as he (Paul Varney)is reputed to have written another really good game, but all that I've found so far is smoke and mirrors. :))) He may have gone on to do other things, and maybe it is bugs like this that kept this game a freebie. Don't know. Doesn't sound very hopeful for Copmom:( I'll have another go at trying to find the programmer, that is the only thing I can think of at this point to try and help.
Ok, I found a somewhat old email address and have written him... it didn't bounce back right away, so maybe there is hope it is still a valid addie. I guess it is a wait and see thing at this point.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Bubby I do believe you are right (once again). I've spent the better part of my day upgrading my drivers for my ATI Radeon video card, (and now my display is ARGGGHHH!) Been messing with that. Uninstalled and reinstalled as suggested, and still get the same error, Runtime error 7008: Object does not exist at line 298. Went to Varney's web site to d/l it, but there's no place there to d/l.
And yes Idahl, I do download and install and uninstall quite a bit since coming to GOTD! LOL but thank you for trying to track down the programmer.. that would be novel!! But, how come so many others have gotten it to work? I've never had any problem getting anything else to work.
Well, here it is after midnight so guess I'd better 'walk away' from this.. wish I could open the program and check the html or whatever.. but, I'm afraid that's going to be over my head since I'm not knowledgeable on programming games, just web sites and that's hit and miss lately!
AND something else, where's Freewarefans latest for today? I never did see that.

Whiterabbit, (and everyone else of course!) I know platform games are not your favorite, although I did recently find one that is fun, and somewhat addictive. Like PlatformtheGame, it is an online game called Fancy Pants Adventures. I believe now there are 2 worlds, and several different levels in each. It has a simple interface, up/down/left/right, and s to jump, but it is difficult, and yet not frustrating. A link for it can be found here:
http://armorgames.com/play/553/the-fancy-pants-adventure-world-2
I have played it on both Internet Explorer, and Firefox, and have ad no problems. Hope you enjoy it guys, to me, it is a lot of fun (and getting some of those golf balls to the holes can be quite trying, lol)
Thanks, Mapsking
Posted 16 years ago # -
Thank's for the link Mapsking. I'll check that link out in a moment.
I never used to like platform games, but with games like Gish, Gumboy Crazy Adventures (which is soon to have a sequel eleased in the form of Gumboy Tournament{which I will buy}) Wik and the Fable of Souls, Barrel Mania and others such as the Brave Dwarves series and even Azangara (That you can get totally free from Game top games - though it's called Dungeon Raider there):
http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/dungeon-raider/
I've come to like platform games; provided they offer something more than donkey kong, lol.
