I have PS5.5 and know how to create Frames/Edges; but, the process is a pain to tweak into something I like. By now, there have to be good galleries (e.g., about.com's http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/freedownloads/l/blframesmain.htm)
Figured one of you artsy types have either cobbled together a list of galleries, or Actions (e.g., http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tools/actions.html )
or preferably, discovered a nifty point & click freeware utility. Hmmmmm?
Thanks in advance!

That sounds like something right up hamstergirl's alley. I bet you end up getting at least a couple of links from her when she happens along...

Hey Guys!
FreewareFan, thanks for the vote of confidence, LOL! It may seem up my alley, but in truth, I am not exactly the best source for all things PShop! Actually, I'm surprised ldahl hasn't dropped in on this one yet - SHE is the real expert (do we detect a bit of hero worship on the hamster's part?) when it comes to graphics' programs.
RunesageMagi - I'm sorry, but my PShop experience comes from Elements 6, which as you most likely know, does not have an "Action" feature. With regards to masks/frames, the first candidate that springs to mind is PhotoFiltre, something that I am a VERY big fan of. One of the nice things about it is that all the plug-ins and many of the add ons (like the masks) work in the free and the paid version (PhotoFiltre Studio). I have both currently installed, just in case I need to refresh the old memory, as in like now, LOL! The home page for the freeware version can be found here http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm The additional masks can be found here http://www.photofiltre-studio.com/addones-en.htm
Just to be sure everything worked, I ran off a few test runs on the PhotoMasque feature (the operative word here is "ran", as in quick like a bunny, and it shows, LOL!). The program comes with a nice selection of masks/frames that you can use right off the bat, but the really nice ones (at least to me) come from the add-on page. If you go here http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/hh244/hamstergirl4444/
you can get an idea as to whether or not this is what you are looking for. I've posted a VERY small selection of what's available - the add-on masks are quite diverse, ranging from subtle to....well,....not so subtle, heh, heh. They are easily tweaked and I'm sure you will find something that appeals to you. I'll let you know if I think of anything else.
Hope this helps,

I'll download the free photofiltre studio software posthaste. Hmmm, maybe I can get Lekanaw to translate the french bits for me. :-) Wow, your bucket was much appreciated. The scroll alone made this wizard's day. Thank you kindly for your efforts, ms. hamstergirl.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Hey Guys - that means gals too!
RunesageMagi - aw shucks, don't mention it (anything for a fellow sage!)....you know, I had forgotten about the language difference. I can chitter, chirp, and squeak with the best of 'em, but, oi, what a headache trying to mangle your way thru that forum without speaking French!!!! There are actually more than just a few sites devoted to PhotoFiltre (free and studio), but those are completely in French with no translation in sight - making on-line translaters next to useless. That being said, there is a plug-in called Jed_Cadres which can be dl'd from the main site at: http://www.photofiltre-studio.com/plugins/plugins.php?lang=en The interface is not translated. It allows you to take a sampling of your image and fashioning a frame out of it (it probably does something else, LOL; but I have yet to figure it out...) I posted two pics using this plug-in (and if I could translate the interface enough to use it, anyone can, LOL), so revisit my bucket at: http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/hh244/hamstergirl4444/
Final note: if you got the bucks, the paid version, PhotoFiltre Studio, is WELL worth it. Its easy to use, it supports custom brushes, and it uses PShop filters......Let me know what you think...
Cheers,
hgPosted 17 years ago # -
Hey RM!
I just saw your post on the ArtRage2 thread. My paws do not leave prints. They are very clean (ever see a hamster groom him/herself? They're more thorough than a cat..) and I do NOT leave...........pellets, of any kind, gerbil or otherwise! Well, maybe a few pine shavings now and then..... ;-)Posted 17 years ago # -
Hi All!! Merry Christmas
@RM: Send me the stuff u need translating, it'll be my pleasure to help out.
Same goes for you HamsterGirl.
Hummm... But, how do we go about doing it?
...no emails in this forum...
This is French-to-English, right?
Just send me the texts, I'll do my best.
Tchau, ManuPosted 17 years ago # -
Hamstergirl, you're a hoot! So long as you understand that pretty much everything I type is done tongue-in-cheek (which surprisingly, even after all these years, hasn't deformed my face any worse than did the obstetrical tongs), you don't have to worry about me stirring the cedar shavings just to watch you scurry about. :-) Thanks muchly for the extra link and samples. Will touch base if I have questions.
Lekanaw, that's mighty generous of you to offer, but don't worry about me pestering you. Will take a chance that the software is more intuitive than Photoshop. (that's a joke since pretty much anything is more intuitive than Photoshop except maybe the IRS Tax codes and the fine print on mortgage refi's)
Hmmmm, I see Bubby erased your email addie. Don't worry, he can't erase Google's cached copy. mwahahahahahahaahaha :-)
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well damn >( Indeed he did erase my link!! Snifff :-(
Sorry Bubby, I had forgotten about that rule, I was just too excited that for once, I was the one that could help out 'round here.
Don't like always being the one asking for help.@RM: So now, how do we go about doing this? Because I Weally Weally wonna!!! You are NOT "Pestering" at all!!
Any suggestions?? I could say it's a gmail account?
Haaaa yes, are u in contact w WhiteRabbit? He has my eMail. Maybe you can ask him?Hummm, what is this you say about GG Cache? You pulling my leg, or is this for real?
If so, send an eMail. If not, don't understand the joke...
Don't know enough tech stuff to see why it's funny! :°)
Talk to u soon, I hope, ManuPosted 17 years ago # -
Okay, I have another request that sorta fits on this thread, if only because I'm too lazy to create a new one.
Attn: Hamstergirl and anyone else who fiddles with graphic design
Back in the early 90's, I had a piece of software that allowed me to fit text INSIDE irregularly shaped outlines. I suspect it was built for Win3.1, because it isn't on my Win95 PC.
As I recall, it would let me really mess with text perspectives (e.g. one side higher than the other, or bowed in or out, or pinched, squeezed, wavy or spirals, etc).
I'm not talking Microsoft's Word Art, which is nice but you can't fill up an invisible outline of a shark with the word SHARK, for example, or a short article on Daylight Savings Time inside the outline of an hourglass.
Considering all the fantastic FREE software some of you guys are finding, has anyone stumbled across something FREE that does that? It's a laborious process using Micrografx Draw (which is still working!) or Photoshop/Illustrator. I miss that old program. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the graphics programs posted in these forums recently might fit the bill, but I am now 90 installations behind! :-(
Many thanks.PS - hamstergirl, that was a really nice message you posted to all the "forum folk"
Posted 17 years ago # -
RunesageMagik - Gave myself Poser 7 as a Solstice gift this year - (thank you CompUSA, this hamster's gonna miss you, regardless of your reputation...) been busy giving it a workout (ha, more like its been giving me a workover); just saw your post above.
Hoot huh? Yeah, that's me, a regular hooter. As for tongue in cheek, one of the nice things about having cheek pouches that reach all the way 'round your shoulder blades is you always have lots of room for things in there, like seeds, tongues, feet, small children (not necessarily your own - no, I never had a litter, but I DO understand why some species eat their young...) So never worry about how I take things, 'cause I'm easy (hey, I HEARD that...!!!) - oh, and because I WILL get you back....and it won't be pretty!,LOL..... ;-)
On your request, hmmmm, have to think about that....let's see, PhotoFiltre has a text plugin, but if memory serves, its only constrains to line, not shape. You could always download the demo for Xara Extreme - it has a text feature that I believe is what you are looking for (I actually wound up buying Xara,- I like its approach to vector drawing, its much easier than your average vector draw app, and WAY faster). Let me snoop around a bit, see if I can find something.
BTW RM, did you see the thread I started "Free 3D" (it died a quick and ignoble death)? Check here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2136?replies=2
I sorta had you in mind when I posted the info about GRAFX2 For Windows since you seem to like some of the old retro apps in the artsy field.Loved your M&M online link, what a hoot (oops!)
hamstergirl
Notice anything different? Yeah, that'r right - this rodent now knows how to format - I promise I won't abuse it....too much, LOL!Posted 17 years ago # -
RunesageMagi, I've always used PSP 6 for frames,it has a built-in frame plug-in, you can still d/l many free frames for it(not as many as in the past, but there are still many around).
As for the shaped (enveloped) text I've always used Corel Draw.
Sorry, neither of those two programs are free (I'm not even sure if you could find a copy of PSP anymore) but those are what I used and never looked for anything else as they do such a good job. The spiral text is so math intensive to program, I've never known any software that gave that one away for free. That doesn't mean there wasn't one, just that I've never heard of it.(Even Corel didn't do it well in the early versions)Hamstergirl, how's the holidays treating you? Someone sent me some avatars... not sure they meant to...whistling and looking up at the ceiling. :)))
Posted 17 years ago # -
You can get old trial versions of Paint Shop Pro from OldVersion.com but to get a full version you would have to look elsewhere (ebay perhaps).
I've got about 10 copies (only the CD) of maybe psp5 or psp6 in a box under the house - but the best versions were probably psp7 or psp8. A lot of the magic in PSP disappeared once Corel got their hands on it - so if you can find a version of Jasc PSP B.C. (Before Corel) you will be in luck. The current versions try to change PSP to work more like Photoshop - which it isn't.
Posted 17 years ago # -
I'm going to take a look at PSP 7 from the OldVersion link you have posted. That version always seems to be the one that had the last really good fanbase. I wish Corel had left it alone; it was probably getting to be too much of a threat...and if they didn't hijack it, Adobe probably would have:)))) I use 6 like it was one big plug-in. I have so many filters chained into it, it's nuts!
I would love to find a copy of Blade, I demo'd once and liked it, but it had gone to Super Blade Pro by the time I went to buy it. Bought SBP but I've never liked the results of the renders as well as just plain Blade. Maybe it is just in my mind that the older version was better...but, then again, maybe not.Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks, Idahl, but these days, if it isn't free, my wallet flashes TILT.
Oh hamstergirl, glad to see someone else celebrates the Solstice. "Hug... don't Cut... Trees"
Hope you'll upload your M&M persona to Imagebucket for us. :-)
You seem to be way more into draw packages than I'll ever be. I'm lucky to draw a straight line with a ruler. I did the Xara free trial long ago. Trials generally don't help, because with 107 zipped and exe appls now pending in the queue, even when I get around to opening something, it may be months before I've actually used it enough to familiarize myself with its capabilities. (or even remember I HAVE it)
FYI- Your 3D thread did not die! It's become so difficult to follow threads here, I actually started a Need2FollowUp folder with your 3D as the first shortcut. GRAFX is now in my Need2Download queue, which has a slightly lower priority than my Need2UnZipInstall queue, which is only one step away from the Need2Learn queue. Please correct me if I'm wrong (naturally, I didn't read the manual) but GRAFX seems to be intended for game illustrators (visuals/landscapes/posers) rather than game storyline/prose development. (climb steps, walk north, play with wenches, kill goblin) I really would like to find a decent game dev appl that allows me to recreate a prose adventure game I wrote in BASIC many years ago. It was about 1000x as complex as Zork, and I figured to have an illustrator do the graphix later. Little did I realize at the time how quickly BASIC would be obsoleted, or how quickly computer animation would develop. I have to stick with what I'm good at, and I can run rings around most who write game storylines/plots (they seem to be on par with porn script writers... no plot, just action) but I leave the artistic/animation creativity to those blessed with a right brain talents.
Come to think about it, I stumbled across another thread of yours from about 5 months back - Twisted Brush. Now I've got v3.14 and v3.18. (both have exe files named tbrush35.exe, but one is only 1792kb, the other totals 4341kb, neither seems to be the one you were praising for having over 4000 brushes) With either version, clicking on at least 3 of the brush styles pops up a window that says "No Matches Found in this edition" Got any updated live links to the "older version" you liked so much? Thanks.

RM have you tried Paint Star? http://wang.zhenzhou.googlepages.com/
It makes terrific frames with just a couple of clicks. If you haven't tried it or haven't gotten the tutorial... take a look, it may be what you are looking for.Hamster thanks for the link, it is the best little freebie I've gotten in a long time, so light and yet it is one of the most interesting and powerful editors I've seen. Wow am I impressed! I can't believe it is free!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks, but I actually do have that one installed. Experimenting with all the draw appls (and dvdripburn appls and game appls and .........) that members have been kind enough to post will likely take me the better part of a year to explore. I have met the HD storage limit monster... and he is me! What's embarrassing is that I've already forgotten who the saint was who found the workaround to my Micrografx Draw dilemma, so I won't know whether to bring roses or beer to the GAOTD picnic.
Posted 16 years ago # -
:))) Bring both!!! (it was ME!) Beer and roses sounds good together! I take it, it is still working for you? Paint Star is super, when you get some time next fall, check it out...it does frames with layers and pathed text.
I have a soft spot for pink roses.... hehehePosted 16 years ago # -
Hi, RunesageMagic
first of all I wanted to send you this SCNR :http://images.google.com/images?q=clapping+hands

Now to the other GRRRR :
As I first saw this and Hamstergirls 3-D topic ( not to forget that Oooooh fractal thread ) I was electrified, yes my hobby. I started to search, copying-pasting -you
know, found a horrible mess of plugins, filters, masks, brushes, some links, programs and TUTs, decided to put them all on an external drive and tidy up that
huggermugger (word of the day), as suddenly, that thing called RL broke in on me and 2 - 3 weeks were gone.Just now I wanted at least post those fiftyeleven links sitting in my toolbarfolder but suddenly Firefox collapsed. It is the best, I send you my 3 hard disks and you try to find something.
In the beginning there was
a great harvesting of the net without saving the links. So I have lots and lots without reference. BTW I don't even have Photoshop I have Gimp, Paint.net and probably all
freewaretools around. -Have a look at the Paint.net forum! Are you looking for such links ? or more specific ?
On the first link I found quite a lot nice brushes .

Graylox thank you so much for your list, I haven't had time to check them out too much but I did pick one to try and it was wonderful.
http://8bf.net/
That suite of plugins is one of the best on the web! RM if you have anything that you can work 8bf files in (such as Irfanview) these plugins might really make you happy. The quality of frames you can make and the effects are super.
I can't thank you enough Graylox!!Now if you run into a free plugin or Filter that makes a gel effect please let me know:)))

For some time I followed up the development of paint.net - the forum is very inspiring, perhaps you'll find something there - though it became rather complex :http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=16&st=0&sk=t&sd=d

Morning, ladies,
Wish I could insert a couple smiley emoticons, like a big grin re- pink roses (I usually start off with carnations, though), and a big wink for the clapping hands and finally, <insert gallant bowing gesture here>. Alas, big thank you's to express my appreciation for all your efforts will have to suffice.Graylox, this thread began focused on Photoshop but then I may have hijacked my own thread by slipping in a question about brushes related to hamstergirl's comments about TwistedBrush and how one version had a lot and the other had few. Both of the ones I found only had a few. I don't believe she's been back since. Hope none of her habitrail tunnels collapsed!
IDOL, yes, indeedy, I'm a big fan of Irfan. Looks like I have my work cut out for me this weekend, between all these links and the ones FwF posted on another thread. Gee, I wonder if my AVG scan slowing down is due to having accumulated over a QTR MILLION files on the HD?
Have a pleasant day.

but for all that - it's FREE so I'll take them.

Graylox- My trademark is the purple carnation. Beautiful, fragrant and noncomittal... unless I'm on a blind date with a bumblebee that goes nuts over the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. It's tough to find a decent fringed/parrot tulip at the local florist. I grow way too few of those bulbs. To evade the paparazzi, an encrypted picnic location will be given only to a select few, and only after we launch a private board where the location can be posted, and said location can be agreed upon, and frequent flier miles are donated so all free speech supporters can attend. To work around the TOS prohibition against exchanging contact info, I will have to bury 1 character of the domain name in each of my next 47 posts. Hope that doesn't cause too much trouble.
Thanks for the links. My existing appls handle text-to-path okay, but I'm really hoping for an appl that will automatically transmogrify a single word or acronym to fit into and assume the shape of an object outline. Maybe I'll sign up for that file sharing site FwF found and post an example. QEnvelopeText was interesting, but alas C++ is beyond my programming skills. I can accomplish similar layouts using existing appls, without the truncating hassle the author warns about. It's just that on deadline I often forget which appl to open and get frustrated. Am suffering a bad case of appl overload.

I just installed the free Serif Draw Plus 6, mentioned here in the forum, and went through the Introduction screens. It looks like it will do what you want, maybe even with a wizard. Here are some screen shots from the intro.
http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562123570aHrsEGPosted 16 years ago # -
Thank you kindly, Vamp/Rat. I kinda touted the Serif software on another page but still haven't had a chance to put the appl through its paces. Just based on the interface, it looked like a clone of my MGX Draw, though more advanced. MGX Draw6 gives me (via convert to curves) the ability to move/stretch individual handles dotting each character's curve until I get something I like (but it's a chore, certainly not automatic). From a cursory glance at your much appreciated screen shots, looks like Serif's "node tool" handles bezier curves in similar fashion, and also offers many of the manipulative tools of MSWordArt and Publisher. Thanks again for going to that trouble.
RE- your screen shot textenvelopes
When/If you have a chance to explore further, lemme know if that Node Tool allows you to add multiple Nodes or if it's limited to the 4 corner handles? Thanks!
Nice pet...does it bite? :-)Posted 16 years ago # -

Hello, RunesageMagi & everyone else.
I’ve been reading (lurking) the forums here for some time now and I’m finally able to share some information on a subjects I’m familiar with, Paint Shop Pro and a little Photoshop Elements. Over the years I’ve collected a multitude of links and downloaded way too many masks, frames, brushes, tubes, patterns, gradients, scripts and plugins. While going through my links, I discovered that many of the good ones are now dead but I have found some that may be of interest. I’m not sure if all of these will work with PS 5.5. I’ve been using PSP 9 for a few years and have only played with PS Elements 5 for a couple of weeks now.
Below I’ve listed links to a cornucopia of PSP and PS compatible masks and a few other resources. You may have to do some digging around to find the most appealing and suitable stuff. These should keep you busy for months. LOL! Also, you can convert Photoshop brushes for use in PSP using a program called “ABR Viewer”. Here is a tutorial with the link to the program: http://www.snedekerdesignz.com/tutpsbrushtopspbrush.htm.Masks and some Mask Brushes:

Ohmigawd, Maizeydaze, it'll surely be the hazy, lazy days of summer a'fore I can plow through all those links! Thanks for joining the party. Don't be a lurker.

Oh, don't I know it! I just revisited some of the links that I posted and have found more pages of links. I've been at it for hours now. Downloaded a slew of masks and plugins and even followed a PSP tutorial. My hard drive will be full soon!
