Hi, been a member of GAOD for years, have installed a few games recently, but last week with Mega World, and this week with Metropolis, it seems to have just activated the game, but not installed it. I have activated it several times, but that seems useless, if I can't find it on my computer.
I do have a new Win8.1, but I have installed some games since I got it, can anyone help?
What am I doing wrong, I didn't mind missing last weeks game, but this one looks interesting, and I guess I need to fix the problem.
Thanks
can't find answers, activates, but doesn't install?

Same happening with me on Windows 7 64 bits... This file seems to be wrecked!

I didn't download the game but WR says "The zip file unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there’s a setup file with security (setup.gcd)."
So, right-click on the setup.exe file, select "run as administrator" from the menu, and see if that works for you. Your normal account might not have the necessary credentials to install to the destination directory.

thanks, but that doesn't change anything, still does the same thing, and I have admin, but I thought I would try,
thanks, anyone else?Posted 10 years ago # -
Reinstall the game, checking the install path (sometimes when I install a game it shows the previous weeks game giveaway install path - I think this has someting to do with the giveaway cookie being corrupted). Make sure the install path is correct. If necessary, delete the gamegiveawayofthedays cookie from the internet cache. Once you've installed the game again if you still have the same problem, check your event log to see if there is any error messges posted. This may give you an insight into what may have gone wrong.
Unfortunately I've never had the problem you are describing, so can't be absolutely certain what to do. Try checking the FAQ's section that I posted in the Game Discussion sticky section; there may be a fix there? You'll find the thread HERE
Also try installing to a different path of the default path doesn't work. If you've got more than one Disk drive, or at least a second partition, try installing the game to that location. you can always move it back to the default location manually later.
To delte cookies you will need to find the location. The following info is partly from memory, so once you've worked through the suggestions, i'd consult oogle as well just to be sure.
C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low
orC:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies
AppData folder is a hidden folder. to view the folder and the files within it you'll need to open up folder options and select Show hidden files and folders. . Just in case you're not sure how to do this I've copied microsofts tutorial on how to fdo it below:
Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
p.s. you may need to show Protected operating system files as well. Be careful what you delte. Maybe back them up somewhere initially just to be sure).
I think it also depends on whch operating system and/or internet browser you use. The giveaway s require I.E. to be able to activate so i would presume the cookies are stored for I.E. So, also check the following for cookies. The above explanation is for Win 7 and possibly Win 8. The one below is for win 8.
It's been a while since I had to delete cookies, so I'm a little rusty. I'd Google the subject as well using your browser and operating system as some of the key words. I hope I've not confused you. :)
1) ... On the Start screen, tap or click Internet Explorer to open Internet Explorer.
2) ... Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, then click Settings.)3) ... Tap or click Options, and then, under History, tap or click Select.
4) ... Select the Cookies check box, and then tap or click Delete.

ok, I will repeat, the game never installs, it downloads, and I can unzip the file, but when I click on setup.exe, it activates the game, it asks me if I want to makes changes under "user controller" but then activates, and I have no idea where the installation goes to.
It activates without installing, and I can't beleive I am the only person with this problem, LOL, I am trying my best to explain it.

Devlin, it's too late for the game but...
The "activation page" that you refer to simply means that the wrapper finished and that the program should have installed and registered. In your case, however, the installation process appears to have aborted and, because of the wrapper, we are forced to guess the cause.
Have you checked the log files of your anti-virus / security software? They may have picked up a false positive and stopped the installation process.
I'm also not convinced that the issue doesn't have to do with your account credentials. I don't have Windows 8 but I assume, which can be dangerous, that it functions similarly to Windows 7 in that an Administrator Account does not automatically have full Administrator Privileges. Windows 7, and again I assume Windows 8, includes failsafes to ensure that users really, really want to perform certain administrator tasks so you have to occasionally click the "OK" box to confirm your intentions. However, an "OK" box will never make it out of the GOTD wrapper so the installation would abort (and you'd get the activation page). You can read this Technet article on User Account Control as desired (may or may not apply to Windows 8).
You probably should read this article "How to Change User Account Control (UAC) Settings in Windows 8 and 8.1" and confirm that your UAC is setup properly for your intended use given your comment about it asking to make changes under "user control". Among other things, the UAC is intended to prevent malware from silently installing so you want the setting high enough to protect you but low enough to let you do what you need to do.

as a final solution, you could try downloading the demo from the developers site. If the program has activated as indicated, the demo from the developers site may work. sometimes they do, sometimes they don't; it may depend on what version they give us. Still, its worth a try.

Thanks, Chris, the part that is odd is I have had the computer since Oct, and have downloaded a few games. Didn't run into the problem until last week, hmmm,,,I did put Kaspersky on it just before that, but I did also try to turn it off, and try installing without it, still didn't work.
I have the User Control set on the default setting, which looks like the safest setting, and checked again, and I am the admin, heck, if I need to put in a password to make changes, I would do it, but it doesn't ask me that. I def think you are right about what it is doing, and now we are guessing what's going on.
Ok, I found the logs, and they show activity, sure wish i knew what they meant!
"Application added to the Low restricted group" and,,,, "Heuristically calculated threat rating"Ok, the timing def pointed Kaspersky, but I know I tried it at least one time with it turned off, cos there was a lot of screaming to turn it back on, LOL.
As you say, it is too late for this game, but I want to be able to download the ones I want, thanks for narrowing it down, now I have to figure out a way to get this to work right, I do hate false threats, and I have been with GOTD for too long to give up now, and Wrabbit, I will try to developers site, just in case, cos this did look interesting.
Thanks very much!Posted 10 years ago # -
Devlin, don't wait until there's a giveaway that you want, try to install today's offering because the wrapper is the same. From your comment it may not be Kaspersky, it may be something else that you installed that's not fully compatible and isn't playing nice.
It's always less stressful to troubleshoot if you're not on the clock and don't particularly care if the giveaway installs.
