Lethal Application (147Mb)
This is a Doujin 2D vertically scrolling shooter, originally a commercial release, which is now available as a full free download. It is unusual in that once off the ground, you can only proceed upwards by using your weapons as thrusters against platform surfaces or the tower sides. You have to keep moving upwards to avoid an electron beam that follows you up the screen; while destroying as many enemies as you can and avoiding as much enemy fire as possible.
Using your weapons for firing or thrust depletes your energy reserves so you do need to keep collecting the ‘E’ energy pods. Larger energy pods provide more energy. There are five special weapons you can get by finding and acquiring the respective power-ups needed.
Use the arrow keys to rotate your spaceship. Press the ‘Z’ key to shoot and the ’X’ key to activate special weapons. You can swap special weapons after acquiring corresponding power-ups, by pressing the ‘C’ key (or ‘V’ key to go through these in reverse order). Holding the ‘Z’ key increases your fire rate, using more energy . If you hold the ‘Z + X’ keys for 2 seconds you get an extra fast fire rate but at the expense of very rapid energy depletion. You might need this to defeat some bosses! Because of having to use the weapons for thrust as well as firing at enemies, you will need to become adept at changing direction quickly by using opposite arrow keys! Alternatively use gamepad buttons etc as gamepad use is supported and recommended.
There are of course the usual large assortments of - nine kinds enemies to encounter and destroy! Each different type of enemy hit gets you different scores. There are also destructible blocks that can impede your progress, until you blast them. You can get a bonus for a rapid chain of enemy hits. If your red energy bar goes down to zero, it’s game over! Hitting enemies at close range doubles the score for each hit.
There are ten stages to play in total - this doesn't include the boss battles, after every one or two normal levels.
You might need to have installed the free Windows Japanese language pack to play the game. For Vista and 7, use Control Panel/ Updates and look at the optional updates available. Check the Japanese pack box, click OK and Windows will download and install the pack for you. For XP - go to Control Panel/ Regional Options - in the General Tab, find the "Language Settings" area and check 'Japanese'. This starts a copy process - you'll need your Windows XP CD. After the XP language install has completed, select the "Input Locales" tab and then add your keyboard/IME to the 'active' list for XP. It’s a fair sized download/ install of 100Mb or so in either case.
The graphics, sound effects especially, and music are really excellent, and it is well worth the 147mb download (plus the Japanese language pack if needed).
So you want to go up in the world. Now’s your chance! The game is great fun to play, and despite the title, will not harm your computer! Considering you would previously have had to buy the game, go get this now!
