Mother Lover (8.5Mb)
Here is a 2D Indie tank shmup action arcade platform game with great graphics and really excellent music, new out this month, released for Mother's Day. It has a great arcade style and a large area to explore/ conquer. Please don’t be put off by the title, whether inspired by mother’s love, or love of a very dear mother, it’s a very good game. It reminds me of big battles with my younger brother as we grew up! The game is in fact actually based on a mashup between two fun NES games Metroid and Blaster Master. Music in-game is by the band ‘No Black Magick’.
It’s freeware and has a rather amusing retro style graphics, and should be good for at least an hour’s play. The game is based on a custom Physics engine, has particle effects and a good simulation of the laws of physics. It’s technically still in Beta for a few weeks, but should be eminently playable.
You move and jump using a combination of the (W,A,S,D) keys and aim and shoot using the mouse, though the gun overheats frequently, needing a cooling-down period before you can shoot again, after an intensive firing session. Using short bursts of fire will allow the gun to cool faster. An Xbox 360 controller can also be used. When you have missiles, you can make them seek targets by holding the missile fire button eg right mouse button. If you get a ‘missing dll’ error message, try updating DirectX to the latest version. The game plays without an install making it portable too.
The map is accessible using the ‘Esc’ key, and there are secret areas to find for extra weapons and extra energy power-ups. There are many game save points, and over 10 types of enemy, with a final boss battle to complete the game. It helps to get as many of the (20) missile and (10) energy power-ups as you can. There are also long shot and bounce shot weapon power-ups if you can find them. There are Physics based puzzles to solve on your travels, as to how to proceed or get past some obstacles. If you get ‘lost’, aim to get to the blinking red dot on the map. You can find full instructions on the download page.
Enemies fire multiple shots making gameplay fast and hectic, in fact furiously fun. You can sometimes find temporary(!) respite by finding shelter. All in all it’s an excellent very enjoyable game!
Have you got it in you to explore a huge alien planet in a futuristic tank, and survive to fight yet another day?
