I downloaded this earlier this year when I realized it was from the same developer as CCleaner. You can also get a recovery program called Recuva and a defragger caller Defraggler for free from the same developers.

I got a challenge for you. Find me a web app that can give me my hardware specs on my computer. It can't be a program because it's not a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. It's a CR-48 experimental model from Google running ChromeOS and runs solely on web apps. So yeah, find me a online web app that can show me what's inside this baby!
Posted 13 years ago # -
The whole point of web browsers (and that probably includes ChromeOS) when it comes to security is to prevent a web app or a web page from having direct access to computer hardware (effectively they run in a software sandbox).
I would definitely be concerned if a web app was able to inventory all the components of my PC just by me going to a web page.
If I wanted some inside info - I'd probably start with Google.com (obviously) then go somewhere like this - http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3373297

What is CIPAV and How Does It Work?
The documents discuss technology that, when installed on a target's computer, allows the FBI to collect the following information:
IP Address
Media Access Control (MAC) address
"Browser environment variables"
Open communication ports
List of the programs running
Operating system type, version, and serial number
Browser type and version
Language encoding
The URL that the target computer was previously connected to
Registered computer name
Registered company name
Currently logged in user name

graylox Thank's you said you can opt out the google toolbar not see may be it like foxitreader you think it a yes but you need to say no ?
Posted 13 years ago # -
Firstly Speccy no longer includes any additional software (like Google toolbar).
All of the above Microsoft Advisories relating to Chrome and Opera all relate to very old versions of the browsers that have since been fixed. (eg Version 6 of Chrome is vulnerable - Google are currently on version 11 and testing 12).
Cynically I feel that Microsoft publishing this information is for no reason other than to demonstrate that Internet Explorer isn't the only browser that has security vulnerabilities - after all Google and Opera are all too willing to point out vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer.
The FBI spyware is also ancient history, relying on vulnerabilities in old web browsers, some user engineering (get the user to click on a dangerous link, or visit a "special webpage"). ChromeOS is not running Internet Explorer on Windows, and it is unlikely that CIPAV would install or work. Furthermore I doubt CIPAV comes with a "Report" button for the end user that displays it's findings (remember it is spyware and it's not supposed to show anything to the user that it is present on the computer)
I still think the easiest way to identify what is inside the CR-48 laptop is taking a screwdriver and following one of the guides to pull it apart, or contacting one of the people who have already done it and ask them.

This is an essential program for your PC. It displays the motherboard model and type of RAM just as two examples of many. It has far more information on your system than System Info in Windows provides.

Thanks; downloading now. I hope they have fixed the annoying temp errors. IWhen I click on the storage section it tells me my SSD (solid tate frive) is running at 128 degrees which is totally ridiculous. When I first saw that temperature I shut my computer down and immediately opened the side of the coputer and felt the SSD; it was stone cold. So much for reliability. :)
Posted 13 years ago # -
Good program. Thanks.
@WR. My SSD doesn't even have a temperature sensor. I assume your 128 was F not C.
Speccy can be set to show either degrees F or C. My disc HDs are running at 103F. 128 is very hot, but regular hard drives are rated to be OK up to 130 to 140 or so (that much heat will shorten their life though). All the SSDs I know can handle more than that; usually 150+. So it wasn't like your computer was going to immediately fail. Does seem strange though particularly since you say the drive was "stone cold." I just wouldn't worry about the heat of a SSD.Posted 13 years ago # -
I'm not worrying about it. It was when I first booted speccy up on the new computer, but after checking the drive and discovering that it wasn't even warm I decided it was a sperious reading. I also have a NZXT temperature monitor and fan controller in two of my bays (it has an LCD screen that shos the temperatures of the areas the probes are placed). I've never had a computer that runs so cool as this one, but there are 13 fans running in the system (8 {3 intake and 5 exhaust} case fans one cpu fan and six GPU fans), with everything on the motherboard covered in heat sinks. If I decide to iadd the water cooling system i purchased for it that would add another three exhaust fans). I was considering buying coolers for the system RAM and the HDD's but I really don't think I need to, lol).
Anyway, back to speccy, the update didn't fix the spurious reading. The temperature is reading in Centigrade (128degrees, it always reads the same),so that's hot. The rest of the hard drives are under 30 degrees, CPU is running at 45 degrees and both graphics cards at between 51 and 60 degrees, (I was running a high end game until about 5 mins ago).

128C!!! Yeah, I would say Speccy is a little off on that measurement.

Just a quick note or reminder...
There are several apps of this sort, some free & some with portable versions available. They can only report what drivers are installed. For the most part that's not a problem, as usually the correct drivers, if not the latest driver versions are installed, but if you're using something like Speccy because you're trying to track down a problem, realize that there's a chance it may not be accurate. Driver entries in Windows' registry include the device names that you see in Device Mgr. &/or Speccy & similar, so wrong driver = wrong name.
