Rocky Memphis and the Temple of Ophuxoff (6.4Mb)
This is a free platform exploration game new out in December 2010, featuring 600 rooms to explore, as you set out on a quest to collect all 4000 pieces of treasure in the temple, and to make it out in one piece and return to your vehicle. You can save your progress in any room, and you can submit your score online even without completing the game. Can you better Indy Jones, or Rick Dangerous; get the treasure and survive to live another day?
The record for completing the game and collecting all of the treasure is a little under two hours, but 10+ hours of gameplay or more is a more reasonable estimate for a first attempt! Finding your way around is helped by a world map, and you can quickly travel between places in the game by using teleporters.
Rocky, the game’s character, can survive dizzy height falls, but a quick brush with a snake will kill him instantly. 'Arrow' keys to move, 'Z' key to jump, 'S' key to save and 'F1' key to show world map.
It’s appealing in its simplicity and has a good deal of nostalgia about it in its replication of a C64 style game. Some will love it, while some hankering after an action packed fast paced game might detest it for all the wrong reasons! There’s the challenge to complete the game as fast as possible while collecting all of the treasure and other challenges come from the precise timing necessary to platform over moving areas or avoid enemies. Rocky has to traverse some twisting rooms, jump, swim, use ladders and vines for climbing, push boulders while avoiding a diverse range of enemies and creepy crawlies; pretty much standard platform game fare!
Power-ups run the gamut from invincibility, to speed up and double jumps plus the rather likeable attractor that grabs all the gold on a screen in one go. Interestingly, power-ups stack and add to your power-up meter, while adding to the effect of current power-ups. You have to find keys of certain colors or with a letter to open color or letter matched doors, eg collecting the ‘A’ letter key opens all of the ‘A’ doors. One particularly good feature of the world map is that it shows rooms with gold still to be collected in red, and rooms where you have cleared all the gold as white, allowing you to optimize your path between rooms, especially later in the game.
The save game feature at any time is great as you will probably want to play the game in shorter sessions rather than in one go. It’s great to have a game where the main focus is on exploration, with a very large game world to explore. The difficulty level is very carefully graded and well-matched to the game play. The level designs are interesting and very well thought out. Each room might test you in a different way. While the graphics have a deliberate pixel look effect, the rooms are colorful and well detailed and the colors are never garish. Animations and sound effects are great too.
It’s available for Windows and Mac. Rocky Memphis is very deserving of your attention!
The game has great graphics, and if you find the pace of the game a little slow, there’s some great music to help while away the time!
