Sombreros (6.6Mb)
If you like top-down arcade ‘bullet-hell’ shooters, you’ll love Sombreros! Fancy a stroll (or drive!) across the border to literally blow the hats off some Mexican bandits and their gang leaders? You’ll also need to blast your way through some scenery such as gates with your gunfire. There’s a super quick-fire option for when you hit a tight spot, to get out of trouble fast, by targeting all your opponents and then downing them in rapid-fire succession! You gain the bosses sombreros for yourself when you defeat the bosses and there are painted horses, donkeys, cars, trucks, flat-cars, bulls, ants, sticks of dynamite, exploding barrels, flying logs and dogs to add to the mayhem.
If you’ve watched the films, the game is inspired by many spaghetti westerns, Sunset Riders and, uh, Lethal Weapon 2… To be fair it only gets really rough and tough during the boss fights Gringo. It’s possible to play it through in less than 20 minutes, but, will you get . . . that far? There’s music and sounds to match. And some blood and gore when you defeat some of the bosses!
You get unlimited ammunition, without having to worry about reloading, and restart a level if/when you get killed. You have unlimited lives too. You can replenish your sombrero gauge (which is depleted using quick-fire) by collecting hats from killed bandits.
Controls:
X and C to confirm or cancel in the menu. ‘Arrow’ keys to move ingame, and move diagonally by holding two ‘arrow’ keys. You shoot in the direction you are facing.
Ingame, use X to fire and hold C to activate Ojos Rojos (red eye or ‘quick-fire’) mode.
In Ojos Rojos mode, press X to mark a shot location (up to 6) then release C to fire.
Gates are destroyed by shooting them (if wooden), pulling them down with donkeys (if metal) or exploding them (also metal).
Shooting sleeping men will procure a Molotov cocktail, which is aimed similarly to ojos rojos, but with only the X button.
In these aiming modes, the aiming reticule will rotate towards the direction you are pressing.
You might even learn a smattering of Mexican (well Spanish!) while you are about it. Buenos Dios, Adiós Amigo! And leave some of that taco on the plate for me Senor! Just make sure there’s a good supply of sombreros my friend (and plenty of dead bandits!)
The biggest challenge is to get as far as you can without getting killed. There’s a complete playthrough (Major Spoiler) - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONx3tcMA5l0)
The graphics are excellent and the soundtrack is cool. Gameplay varies between quite straightforward, and brutally tough scenes to get through, during the three levels of the game. You can play nearly full screen by resizing the window. The menu is a little awkward to navigate, using just the ‘X’ and ‘C’ keys, but you will soon get used to it. You can up the screen resolution too.
Sombreros is whimsical, fun and extremely difficult in parts! Go for your gun, Amigo!
