   for my usage I tend to first use TestDisk & PhotoRec 6.11.3, available free from cgsecurity.org - no GUI, but it runs self contained with versions for DOS- real or in a Windows 9x DOS box, Microsoft Windows NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS, and Mac OS X.

   Absolutely no eye candy, but you can boot from an entirely different OS [that can 'see' the drive to work on] for recovery.

   The whole list of file formats recovered by PhotoRec contains more than 320 file extensions (about 200 file families)

   Recuva I keep around with several others.

   my comment in the wee hours about that being my gold standard got moderated out.

   I tend to agree with TestDisk and PhotoRec - they aren't pretty, but they haven't let me down before, and when I'm trying to recover files or a partition, looks aren't important. Results are what count.

   Also there are a few other good password recovery programs on the http://cgsecurity.org site.

   PC Inspector File Recovery & Recuva are some that I found work good best to have a backup & not need info & URL's at,

   The most common "data recovery" scenario involves an operating system (OS) failure (typically on a single-disk, single-partition, single-OS system), in which case the goal is simply to copy all wanted files to another disk. This can be easily accomplished with a Live CD,Like Linux I use Knoppix to a USB.
