Sir Lancelot (4.2Mb)
Sir Lancelot is on a quest to find the Holy Grail in this cute platformer. It is again a Spectrum remake, by the same author as Spiky Harold HERE. It was a well-liked game ‘Manic Miner’ type game when it first came out on the Spectrum, and the remake catches the atmosphere of the original very well!
As the fabled knight in shining armour you explore 24 rooms in the castle, through which have been strewn treasures, including keys, crowns and gold, and encounter seven different types of monster. They move up and down or across the screen and your task is to develop a strategy to defeat/avoid them and retrieve the treasure. Collecting the jewels etc can be an easy or a difficult task depending on the screen layout and the moving hazards, but as a general rule it gets progressively more difficult, and more thought needs to be put in to each screen and reactions need to get sharper. You have a limited time to complete each screen.
The solutions to the treasure quests on each screen are made harder when the objects seem to be out of reach. However, each screen can be completed and it just takes practice to get to the next one. The exit appears when you have collected all of the treasures/keys etc.
It’s a fast and hectic game as Sir Lancelot can move quickly and has amazing jumping abilities. He also survives lengthy falls. There are many variations on the different screens; (one-way) ladders, stairs, towers, hidey-holes and all sorts of things. Because of the combination of hazards and placing of collectible objects, strategy becomes an important element in the game, together with accurate timing and quick reflexes! You need to work out a strategy for each screen early on, as otherwise you can get trapped or be unable to reach some items. You get 4 lives, and the ‘lives remaining’ march across the base of the screen!
You can play the game windowed or full-screen, and change the background. The game has sound effects, but no music, and retro graphics. The ‘F12’ key exits the game. It quickly ramps up in difficulty after the first level!
You might find getting through all of the levels quite tough! But then again, you are playing as Sir Lancelot!
It may not be an over deep game, and has a ‘smallish’ number of screens to get through, but it plays very well and is fun to play! Worth downloading as an enjoyable game to while away some very enjoyable minutes; if not hours!
