   Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have brought together Queenslanders hunting for up-to-the-minute information on the devastating floods afflicting the sunshine state.

   As Queensland Police work around the clock to keep the public informed on the movement of flood waters, they have also turned to these popular sites to publish updates and combat myths and rumours.

   Some of the false reports included a panicked message that Brisbane CBD was being evacuated and the public transport system closed down.

   Other Twitter users also attempted to stem the panic.

   "People saying 45 minutes until Brisbane CBD underwater! Please stop causing unnecessary panic," wrote one.

   "Incorrect tweets about Brisbane transport and airport closing have caused needless panic. Please be responsible", said another.

   My opinion is still that real-world examples of social networking sites being used for communication during emergencies are outweighed by examples of the same sites being used for trivial or malicious goals in addition to being the privacy disaster they seem to be.

   YMMV, I dont have a social life and probably qualify s a hermit, but I think a fair number of the people using those sites are gonna get bit by them one way or another.

   Facebook is also talking to the FBI. This fact was mentioned in passing in Time's man of the year article about facebook's founder. Daniel Ellsberg asks us to consider the implications of what would happen if the FBI ad free access to Facebook's database, which is one of the largest in the world. You can hear him talk about it in a video of a forum "Wikileaks: Why it matters. Why it doesn't." available on many video hosting sites such as ForaTV or Youtube.

   Facebook has been helping the Police for some time now. Not that its a bad thing but criminals should be made aware. LOL.

   People tend to put way to much personal information on Facebook without thinking who can access the information. I think it is a good think that the law enforcement can access the information if needed.
